  • thanks, man

  • great help, showed me what i should focus on for getiing good at slapping. the rudaments seriously why didnt i think of that . in so fecking stupid

  • Great vid! Very detailed, keep up the good work! Your a great player! One thing I haven't really seen on a lot of slap pop vids is a little more focus on the popping finger.

  • Great Video

  • A black christian. ZOMGATZ.

  • Very nice bass man...is it also a TRB....

  • Thanks :)

  • Do you think a 5 string is really useful for Gospel? No offense, but I play Blues, Funk, and Metal and I've never needed more than 4 strings. Just want to know if you find the 5th string useful. Your video is good, by the way.

  • @lagranged86 5 and 6 strings are more for metal and rock for the most part. it's easier for certain things like higher and lower notes, but thats about it.

  • Cool Glad it helps.

  • slap isnt muting the string u play it. like flea make noise!

  • I'm a bass newbie and I really appreciate these videos! Thanks :)

  • Torch, I just started bass, I love flea from RHCP. Thanks for your help, it's seriously helped me HEAP!

  • Cool! I am glad it helped you out.

  • Me too. I am leaning "get on top" and I can't do the slap part at all. Therefore, thanks Torch7!

  • I find your videos to be a little easier to understand and follow.

  • Glad they help.

  • And Very helpfull for all the noobs out there Like me, Thanks, other vids i've watched were lo qual or just didnt explained as well as you did, thanks again

  • sweet! Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Noob Question : Why does his bass has 5 Strings? Sorry again for the noob question. thanks in Advance

  • It's just an extended range bass... 5 string basses becoming more common now-a-days, there are even 6 + string basses.

  • Thanks, really helpful!

  • glad it helps.

  • Well I'm just repeating all the other comments. But by far one of the most helpful vids on slapping. I learned minutes from u I didn't get from hours from the pros. ...Thnx A-LOT!!!

  • Thanks alot! Been trying to find a decent tut for a while now. (Y) (5 stars)

  • Thanks Glad you enjoy it.

  • seriously thank you this was soooooooooooo much more helpful than anything ive seen

  • Thanks for the comments.

  • Thank you finally, somebody tried to explain how to slap. Not just show how awsome that is if you allready know it;) You know I always learned better from newbies, a few tiers higher than me, than from real pros. In math it was all it trivial and analogic to something trivial. But i could not do it. Then somebody told it in ancient language of fuck this constants here and here and here you go and it was done. :)

  • good job!

  • I like it that you make yourself vulnerable by showing your progress! Thats very humble, and helpful of you young man! I am also quite impressed that you would even take the time to teach others, free of charge! You cannot help but be blessed!

  • @doctorbusiness Thanks I appreciate the comments

  • This has been very helpful. Thanks for explaining so much about the technique. You've made it easy to understand.

  • @aoscruggs49 Glad it helps.

  • +1 this is the best clip I've come across trying to figure this slap thing out! Got a lot outta this one. Thanks.

  • @mathewsip thanx for the comments.

  • Great Stuff, Good Work, God Bless@!!

  • Hey, great lesson. I learnt a lot.

I have kind of an oddball question about your bass. Is it comfortable anchoring your thumb on those pickups? Do those two screws get in the way?

  • Actually anchoring on the pickups on this particular bass is very comfortable. On my other basses, I don't anchor on the pickups, because of the way the pickups are configured.

  • ive been playing guitar for 1year, and i recently picked u pmy brothers bass and cant put it down, been playing for 4days :D and i can play about 20songs, original, classy, oold, catcheh! now im working on slap bass, and this helped a whole lot, thankyouuuuuuuuuu!

  • you are welcome...Thanks to the comments.

  • Good stuff, so far the best tutorial on slapping that I've found on youtube.

  • Wow.... Thanks.

  • ya i agree with dreadnought75136 your awsome and you explain it way better than the pros. the pros never explain about the theory off bass the pros only show off and expect people to do it great video thanks alot

  • glad you are getting something from these videos.

  • really helpful

  • Thanks for the comments.

  • thank you sir! definately usefull! could you post some more vids? perhaps on some jazz rythms that are good to practise?

  • @joefreakhouse1 Glad it helps... I will see what I can do once I start shooting more videos.

  • yo man thank you for these videos, they have helped me improve my bass playing thank you

  • No prob. Glad they help.

  • You remind me of this guy in Chicago I saw in a Guitar Center. He pwned noobs.

  • Well class vid mate alot better then some of the "pro" vids out there

  • thnx

  • thanx a lot man !

  • no problem

  • hey thanks, most vids I see are just people just showing off than actually teaching.

  • thnx

  • hehe When I saw the name of this video, I saw your bass and thought, "Oh my god, you have that nice of a bass, and can't slap?"

    lol

  • finally somebody broke it down for us! this helps alot, thank you

  • finally got it down! thanks!

  • am i doing wrong, and how can i fix it? note: i didn't slap it with an amp on. i just slapped it with an eletric bass without the amplified sound. is that why i can't slap properly?

  • woah great tutorial dude i found really helpful!

  • Nice Bass. Looks like a yamaba 1005.

  • i thinks its an ibanez sr im not sure though

  • Yamaha TRB 1005

  • I appreciate this video. I may just pick up my bass again.

  • Just wanted to post a quick thanks for this video. Like a few others I'm just starting to learn this technique and as others have said this has to be one of the best break downs of it I've seen so far, so thankyou for taking the time to share it.

  • Glad to hear it's been helpful.

  • I have a question. I tried to play the 'slap style', but when i slap my E string, I just make a harmonic. What's my problem and how can I fix it? Note: I didn't try it on the amp; i just tried it on an eletric bass without one. Is that why I just make a harmonic?

  • I have a question. Whenever i slap my E string, I just make a harmonic or sometimes a percussive sound. What am i doing wrong, and how can i fix it? note: i didn't slap it with an amp on. i just slapped it with an eletric bass without the amplified sound. is that why i can't slap properly?

  • am i doing wrong, and how can i fix it? note: i didn't slap it with an amp on. i just slapped it with an eletric bass without the amplified sound. is that why i can't slap properly?

  • I'm starting to learn this style and this was a lot of help, far better then most of the other videos I have viewed online.

  • great video :)

  • Thanks.

  • When you do the pop, how far under the string are you supposed to go? I don't really get that popping tune.. it's enough with you tips, right? And you use only 1 finger on each string?

    Thanks for the video

  • Just far enough under the string to get the sound you desire, its really not that deep. I only use one finger, usually the pointing finger.

Also, the age of the strings, and the amplification of the bass, can greatly change the popping sound.

  • This is what i want to learn, thanks for posting. This video is far more better than those expertvillage bass slapping video.

We want a simple, direct, clear-talking teaching.

  • Thanks for the comments... I appreciate them...

  • Great video - found you cool to listen to and very educational. I'm thinking of moving over to bass from guitar as I seem to pick things up a lot quicker on the bass than I do on the guitar.

    Thanks for posting this. :-)

  • you have just inspired me to ry this style and keep it while playing my bass

  • Wow... that comment made my day... glad it inspires.

  • thank you so much your lesson exceeds all the others ive seen on youtube!

  • Cool, glad it helps.

  • you just learning so how long have you been playing the bass guitar.

  • I've been playing for a while now, at the time of the video, maybe about 4 months... I don't quite remember.

  • :^^ cool commenting on ur self

  • You explain very good, Great Video.

  • Thanks.

  • Torch - this is absolutely an awesome lesson in popping and slapping. You really break it down and it's so SOOO helpful that you're filming this right after you first "get it." You explain this well and this was my first night of seeing the light too. Thanks bro!

  • hey i cant find the chord charts on the web site (help)

  • Sorry the site is in the midst of a re-design.

  • great video man. Keep it goin.

  • Thanks...

  • Cool! Can you tell me your set up?

  • Bass: Yamaha TRB1005, Amp: Crate 8" practice Amp, Video Camera: Canon Optura, firewire connection to laptop.

  • Cool Glad it helps.

  • Pentatonics and blues scales are awesome for slap :D

  • Thanks for the insight!

  • Very helpful. Thank you =)

  • You are welcome.

  • hey ive been playing bass for like a month. can u share any web sites er something that help newbies like me?

  • check out my site.

  • really useful video, but the only problem I see is that you mute too much the strings, so the people who dont know how to apply the technique may think that you are hitting the string where you rest your thumb.

anyway really good and clear video

  • Thanks for the comments.

  • You're a great teacher, thanks for your contribution to youtube, one of the best out there!

  • Your comments made my day.

  • Thanks a lot man. Very effective lesson. 5/5.

I have been playing for 25 years but never played this style so I appreciate your tuition - in a simple manner!

    youtube[dot]com/watch?v=cJH11pHJ8yE

  • thanks dude been playing bass for 5 years and thought it was about time i learned slap and pop, this is the first video i watched on it and in 5 minutes my skill went up noticably. great video bro.

  • Wow... Your comments made my night... Thanks.

  • thanks this helped a lot

  • Glad it helps.

  • I started playing bass amount a month ago. I'm 13 and I decided to play bass in a band with my friends.. and after learning the basics I thought slapping and popping was going to be much harder but this video made it pretty simple to get down the basics. Thanks!

  • That's good news..

  • this is great.

i just got a bass so i'll be following this.

    thanks.

  • you're welcome.

  • This is very helpful. thanks=]

  • Glad it helps!

  • Hey I just started playing the bass and my friend told me to try and start slapping and popping and what not. I can do the whole pop and slap thing. But what do you mean by "muting with left hand"? I can't get that noise... do I just press down on some of the frets with my left hand?

  • When muting, you gently rest your hand/fingers on the strings, just enough touch on the strings so that they don't ring out while, pusing down on the fret, so that a not is made.

  • nice lesson but umm wen i try the slap i can't hear it and i dont know if im doing it wrong or its just my amp or something?!?!?!

  • Try slapping down and through the string... so that the thumb doesn't rest on the string too long, making the thud sound...

  • good job!!!

  • Thanks

  • love the bass

    what kind?

  • Yamaha TRB1005

  • THAT IS A GOOD LESSON

  • Thanks! :)

  • Looks all good...

But i think you're technically supposed to go up as well if you slap through the strings instead of just one down movement. Helps with speed.

  • The motion you described is another way of slapping through the stings, and coming back up, called "double thumbing"

  • yea its an awesome explaination makes sense and easy to understand thx heaps man

  • No problem, glad it helps

  • Thanks a lot!Sharing what you know is wonderful. I can't afford regular lessons, but thanks to your video I know in which direction to practice.Really good and important job.

    Greetings from Italy!

  • No problem, I understand about not being able to get lessons. Stay tuned to this channel, I anticipate getting some more videos together after the holidays.

  • wow helped a lot!

  • Glad it helps

  • Very nice instructions, you give an easy and accurate way to slap and pop to beginners!!! Nice job again, keep up the good work!

  • Thanks.

  • so you just make the string hit the neck and you get your slap

  • It's really a matter of striking through the string. There are two different schools of thought, I I have seen both executed. So find whats comfortable to you. I have seen people do exactly what you described... slaping the string against the neck, with a quick thump. Also I have seen people strike through the string, with there thumb landing on the string below.

  • could you tell me what bass guitar that is ?

  • It is a Yamaha TRB1005

  • Wow i finally get it.

    Thanks!

  • Cool! Glad it helps

  • woah man you made it easier to understand thanks alot
