A lot of posts pour scorn on electric vehicles saying that you move polution from oil to coal when you do this kind of project. there is NO comparision between a motor that is 80% efficient , has hardly any moving parts, no lube, filters, oil to a petrol engine. It costs a relatively small amount of electric generation to power an EV in place of the pools of gas that cars consume.
The truth is we are going to continue to increase the use of electricity and that is not the real problem. the problem is power generation, and an aging distribution grid, I'm all for nuclear power, and please dont bring what happened in Japan in March because those are different set of conditions there, nuclear power generation has evolved and can be build to be safe we should build more nuclear plants to satisfy future needs. IMHO
@jkhalifax so if less than half of american electricity is generated by coal, why would you imply that the car runs 100% on coal? Wouldn't it be more accurate to say it runs on what generates the other 54%? Wind, Hydro, Natural Gas, etc? Or were you just trolling cuz he's trying to make a difference and makes you feel bad about yourself?
@projenna This video doesn't make me feel bad about myself. I just don't feel that electric cars are the answer if most of our electricity is generated by burning coal. Someday we may be able to say that wind, solar, nat gas, hydro produce most of our energy, but that day isn't here yet. It's simple math.. not enough power on the grid to support millions of electric cars, and in order to supply enough power for millions of cars we'd have to ramp up the burning of the dirtiest of fossil fuels
@jkhalifax awesome response. No anger or sarcasm. I appreciate it. I would counter though, that if less than half of our electricity is generated by coal and that percentage is declining in the face of new technologies, isn't that still better than vehicles powered by 100% fossil fuels? Do you think that the ramp up of coal usage would eclipse the damage already being done?
@projenna Yes. I believe that burning large amounts of coal is more harmful to the environment than current hybrid, or even simply low-emission vehicles. I'm not really a conspiracy theorist or anything, but the US sits on the largest deposits of coal in the world. Could electric cars possibly be a maneuver to help the economy for decades to come, all at the expense of the environment? I'm not a scientiist, so I'm not sure. But the possibility is worth considering.
To each their own. I have a 1971 Porsche 914 / 4 and there's no way I'm doing more than swapping the engine for a 6 cylinder (which I've been told is like the difference between day and night) and the transmission to a side-shifter. The 914 / 4, even though it would be nice to have more power, it's a nice, light, fun little car to drive; partly because of the fact that it's mid-engine (which all the battery weight up front would ruin).

First off, 914's are nothing special, in fact, they're horrible, loud, air cooled and incredibly slow machines, effectively a beetle with a different body, and there's tons of em lying around.
Second, to the 914 crazy people, the video says they only drilled a couple of holes to install the kit. Why, that must mean it's easy to revert it back to the junk engine!
Third, I'll bet the electric 914 is twice as fast as the original. I smoked a 914 the other day with my old 84 Colt GTS by a long shot

Currently States are considering filing bankruptcy for spending. watch?v=IqmeT5ykKf0
The Govt owns 61% of GM, GOOGLE, “GM's electric-car fantasy running out of gas” and read links. The Green Movement should be free market driven
The average pollution carbon footprint created by 12 kilowatt hours of electricty is nearly equal to that of one gallon of gasoline. Estimates done by Busettii Electric Bikes show that 6 kilowatt hours electricty is needed to charge a huge 72 volt 50 ah lithium battery. This car will go 75 miles on each charge so that means its about one fourth of the carbon footprint of an equivolent gas powered car. A 75% cut in carbon and pollution out put sounds good to me ! Dr. Faber
Why is it we can not get around all the batteries? by maybe using a generator on all four wheels.. and power one large deep cell battery as you go . Or maybe use a generator plus a step up voltage transformer that runs off a second belt drive to power a 100 / 200 Hp AC motor with a counter weight flyweight system mounted on a centrifugal clutch.
Fits all 4 cylinder manual transmission Porsche 914s (and ONLY 914s - NO other models, NO other makes, PERIOD. No 911s, no Ghias, ONLY THE 914). Features the same powdercoated construction style battery racks and welded polypropylene battery boxes as the VoltsRabbit™ Kit, plus a large motor and 120-volt system for 85 mph top speed and 80 - 100 miles range. The high performance Curtis 1231 controller is standard. The rear trunk still has usable cargo space, and will accept the targa top.
Yeah, there are only so many 914's out there, and tree huggers like you are destorying them. Like one guy said, worlds heaviest porsche. Bet it no longer feels like a porsche.
That's real "green" because we all know that used car batteries are not the least bit toxic and are great for the environment.. In case you missed the irony, that's a nice acid factory you've got there..
The 914 has no power brakes. The factory 914 brakes were one step up from those of a 10 speed bike. My guess is the car weighs at least 450lb more than stock, So stopping is not really going to be an option with this vehicle. But once you hit something, and you find all 7 front batteries in your lap, and the 5 rear batteries smacking you in the back of head. I think we better run this one by the department of transportation safey crash test before we want to start mass production.
@bmpdesigncom He had to have it inspected by his state to get the title changed to electric so he didn't have to take it through emissions. And your weight estimate is probably low. But hey, let's regulate it so we can be protected from ourselves. It shouldn't do more than double the cost and keep us on oil for an extra 50 years because of it. Mass production has already started in other countries and Nissan Leaf is out in the US for sale as a production EV.
I invented a breakthrough source of energy that contradicts the law of conservation of energy. I have a PROOF that there are electrodynamic phenomena that contradict the law of conservation of energy. I am looking for $6M for a prototype and patents.
So sad it used to be a bad ass 914. Oh well aparently everyone wants the combustion engine to die. I saw this at SEMA last year it so sad. then again this is just my opinion.
@KillerKaprice TThe 914 was never bad-ass. It was an 80 h.p economy car built during the 70s when there was spike in fuel prices. Its a completely appropriate for an electric kit. The internal combustion engine will last as long as its competitive with electric. Why would care if internal combustion dies if there is a faster and cheaper alternative.
Basically you install a vacuum pump that creates the same amount of negative pressure as the original engine did. So with that, all your vacuum driven accessories still function.
No less safe than if your regular engine springs a leak in the rubber vacuum hoses. Even with the brake boost system out of commission, you still have unassisted brakes. You'd have to stand on the pedal, but you'd still be able to stop.
We had to drill only two holes! Rubbish. I hope nobody is retarded enough to belive this. You have to drill more than two holes even to fit as simple as a car alarm.
@scarabeus79 actually, when it comes to wiring a car, all wiring is fed through predetermined holes put there by the manufacturer. then the wiring is hidden under plastic trim and carpet (straight from the manufacturer). so it's quite feasible that they didn't have to do any drilling seeing as all these predetermined holes are there. they most likely stripped the car and followed the wiring already there.
nice work my friend!! very soon you'll have nuclear fusion to charge your wonderful porche. .Your so many steps ahead , a great inspiration, as without your efforts we would not even think it possible. : P
Nice work! Mike Brown's been a real asset to the EV movement for a long time now. I was wondering, though. How do you protect the components from rocks and weather with them mounted under the car like that?
ALSO! IF YOU add a wireless energy pack to the ev it would have infinite milage! i remade nikola teslas wireless energy system, just check it out! wireless energy would allow all electric vehicles to run forever till the ac motor burns out which is 100s of years!!!!
Good news you will get new Nanotech battery A123 systems more powerful than Lithium-ion Powered ! The Nanotech battery quick charged in 5 mins get full , you will get about 450 miles range

electric cars are not the way forward. unless in the future they can design more efficient batteries and some kind of self contained charging station that keeps them charged as you drive. Otherwise its a waste of time as your still having to run a nuclear or coal fired powerstation to charge it. if everyone ends up driving these then thats even more strain on the power station and therefore ore polution... stick to the fuelcell idea guys ;)
What about hooking up some nice Solar panels in your garages roof? That would mean free renewable energy. Youll just need to change the batteries every 3 years. Instead of visiting the gas station weekly, spending a bunch of dollars, and taking your car twice a year into service because your engine needs some treatment... Stick to the fuelcell idea? Why not improve the 0% fuelcell ideas?
That's true, but it's cheaper. Not everybody can afford the more expensive components, so it's good to see examples of what you can do with cheap ones. :)
For me, Id rather spend 80 bucks on an amg battery than 50 on the oldschool style. Ofcourse there are more expensive/efficient options also.(This parts undecided for me)
Id probably use a Perm PMG 132, it can be had for 850-1700 bucks, Only 25lbs!
34hp 72 v, 19hp 48v with 86% efficiency.
Many others with simular performance, come with an even higher price tag and 200-400lbs more in weight.
If anything it is lighter. It doesnt have a massive internal combustion engine with radiators and intakes and exhaust and fuel tank etc. if you use lithium ion batteries it will probably be lighter than the gas version.
Not only is it heavier but you "save the environment" by driving a car filled with acid and metals that are sometimes toxic like lead, even the more benign metals used in some like nickel come from some of the most environmentally damaging strip mines on the face of the earth. Hummer manufacturing is more environmentally friendly that a Prius.
Personally I don't really don't care for the environment, I just prefer the electric motor for its superior torque and quietness. And if you use lithium ion batteries they are pretty much harmless to the environment even more so when you recycle them. Even lead acid batteries can be recycled and cause nothing to the environment.
Lead is harmless, huh? Must be why the plant I spent a few weeks installing equipment at in Columbus had showers and two part changing rooms to keep the work clothes from contaminating their civvies.
To clear a few things up, the manufacturer of the kit states that it adds approximately 500 lbs (roughly 25% weight gain over a stock 914), thus the requirement for different springs and shocks. And while the 914 did have an internal combustion engine, it was air cooled and therefore had no radiator. In any event, it's not what I would do with a 914, but I guess it beats seeing one in the junkyard. This thing would handle terribly, and I worry about crashworthiness, but still a good thing.
iv got a third gen gta sitting in a storage yard right now.. thinkin bout sending it off for scrap, i dont have the time to fix her up- i feel like such a prick though even thinkin bout crushing that ol girl :( we had some good times together
How much is the entire kit? Shame it's for 914's there so damn ugly. I want an EV though :)

I think we better run this one by the department of transportation safey crash test before we want to start mass production.
bmpdesigncom 1 year ago
@bmpdesigncom He had to have it inspected by his state to get the title changed to electric so he didn't have to take it through emissions. And your weight estimate is probably low. But hey, let's regulate it so we can be protected from ourselves. It shouldn't do more than double the cost and keep us on oil for an extra 50 years because of it. Mass production has already started in other countries and Nissan Leaf is out in the US for sale as a production EV.

@NRYProductions you can add a step up capacitor system for extra juice when you need it, delivering a momentary overvoltage to the motor.

So sad it used to be a bad ass 914. Oh well aparently everyone wants the combustion engine to die. I saw this at SEMA last year it so sad. then again this is just my opinion.
KillerKaprice 1 year ago
Have you ever drivin a 914? Slow and not a great car. Any new car could smoke a old 914. This electric car is NOW a bad arse car.
chevydavehartwig 1 year ago 7
yes, and I know it aint no 911 turbo but It was better with a gas engine in my opinion. and most of my mates as well.
KillerKaprice 1 year ago
@KillerKaprice TThe 914 was never bad-ass. It was an 80 h.p economy car built during the 70s when there was spike in fuel prices. Its a completely appropriate for an electric kit. The internal combustion engine will last as long as its competitive with electric. Why would care if internal combustion dies if there is a faster and cheaper alternative.
th0maserv0 1 year ago
The 914 was junk anyway. I'm glad to see it's put to good use.

can some one tell me how the brakes work on this car .. in a real car the brakes are aided by vaccume from the engine?
thanx, nick
2utubepace 2 years ago
Basically you install a vacuum pump that creates the same amount of negative pressure as the original engine did. So with that, all your vacuum driven accessories still function.
chibichan1701 1 year ago 2
is that safe?? or will u lose brakes if that setup stops working??
thank u for your answer,
nick
2utubepace 1 year ago
No less safe than if your regular engine springs a leak in the rubber vacuum hoses. Even with the brake boost system out of commission, you still have unassisted brakes. You'd have to stand on the pedal, but you'd still be able to stop.
chibichan1701 1 year ago
only if they are power brakes.

Use lithium ion batteries.
Their life span is 10 times longer than lead acid batteries.
They weigh a fraction of the weight of lead acid batteries. Remember the power to weight ratio.
bloodstone1445 2 years ago
lol do you have like 5 to 10 thousand dollars if not more for giant lithium ion batteries like in the Tesla
slade420 2 years ago
We had to drill only two holes! Rubbish. I hope nobody is retarded enough to belive this. You have to drill more than two holes even to fit as simple as a car alarm.
scarabeus79 2 years ago
@scarabeus79 actually, when it comes to wiring a car, all wiring is fed through predetermined holes put there by the manufacturer. then the wiring is hidden under plastic trim and carpet (straight from the manufacturer). so it's quite feasible that they didn't have to do any drilling seeing as all these predetermined holes are there. they most likely stripped the car and followed the wiring already there.
Jeez these guys are really retarded huh?

electric cars are not the way forward. unless in the future they can design more efficient batteries and some kind of self contained charging station that keeps them charged as you drive. Otherwise its a waste of time as your still having to run a nuclear or coal fired powerstation to charge it. if everyone ends up driving these then thats even more strain on the power station and therefore ore polution... stick to the fuelcell idea guys ;)
retrowagen1234 2 years ago
What about hooking up some nice Solar panels in your garages roof? That would mean free renewable energy. Youll just need to change the batteries every 3 years. Instead of visiting the gas station weekly, spending a bunch of dollars, and taking your car twice a year into service because your engine needs some treatment... Stick to the fuelcell idea? Why not improve the 0% fuelcell ideas?

Looks like a cheap heavy electric motor and cheap batteries.
Id rather use a lightweight 30hp electric motor and better batteries..
DarkLinkAD 2 years ago 5
That's true, but it's cheaper. Not everybody can afford the more expensive components, so it's good to see examples of what you can do with cheap ones. :)
OlivierdeAthos 2 years ago
For me, Id rather spend 80 bucks on an amg battery than 50 on the oldschool style. Ofcourse there are more expensive/efficient options also.(This parts undecided for me)
Id probably use a Perm PMG 132, it can be had for 850-1700 bucks, Only 25lbs!
34hp 72 v, 19hp 48v with 86% efficiency.
Many others with simular performance, come with an even higher price tag and 200-400lbs more in weight.
DarkLinkAD 2 years ago
Perm PMG 132?
Aren't those the motors they use in electric outboard motors for boats?
OlivierdeAthos 2 years ago
Im not sure of all of its uses but it is very popular due too its light weight, ranging from go-carts, motorcycles and cars.
DarkLinkAD 2 years ago
what a waste of a nice 914 porsche
craig3x 2 years ago
so you add 500 pounds of batteries, kill the handling, and can drive a whopping 25 miles every 3 days, boy sign me up.
Or maybe I'll just stick to flatheads and cars with backseats.
wytkracka 2 years ago
If anything it is lighter. It doesnt have a massive internal combustion engine with radiators and intakes and exhaust and fuel tank etc. if you use lithium ion batteries it will probably be lighter than the gas version.
jalit 2 years ago
electric cars are heavier.
nandoanalog 2 years ago
Not only is it heavier but you "save the environment" by driving a car filled with acid and metals that are sometimes toxic like lead, even the more benign metals used in some like nickel come from some of the most environmentally damaging strip mines on the face of the earth. Hummer manufacturing is more environmentally friendly that a Prius.
wytkracka 2 years ago
Personally I don't really don't care for the environment, I just prefer the electric motor for its superior torque and quietness. And if you use lithium ion batteries they are pretty much harmless to the environment even more so when you recycle them. Even lead acid batteries can be recycled and cause nothing to the environment.
jalit 2 years ago
Lead is harmless, huh? Must be why the plant I spent a few weeks installing equipment at in Columbus had showers and two part changing rooms to keep the work clothes from contaminating their civvies.
wytkracka 2 years ago
Totally ignoring the lithium ion part...
jalit 2 years ago
why don't you go downtown to the oil headquarters and suck their dicks?
yourealiti 2 years ago
Yeah, hard for you to make a fact based rebuttal, eh?
wytkracka 2 years ago
To clear a few things up, the manufacturer of the kit states that it adds approximately 500 lbs (roughly 25% weight gain over a stock 914), thus the requirement for different springs and shocks. And while the 914 did have an internal combustion engine, it was air cooled and therefore had no radiator. In any event, it's not what I would do with a 914, but I guess it beats seeing one in the junkyard. This thing would handle terribly, and I worry about crashworthiness, but still a good thing.
