well, I'm Iranian and Persian. But there are lots of Iranian (~30%) with different ethnicity(azaris, kurds, ...). the thing is the term Persian is also used in relation to the language as well as the majority of ethnicity. But it the past Persia referred to a big empire.
so persian language >>>>Parsi/Farsi (official language)
persian ethnicity >>>> any persian and persians' variations speakers
"Your Persian? Oh you mean that great land between Mesopotamia, Assyria and Thrace." - To quote another Iranian comic about the inanity of Iranians preferring to call themselves Persian.
@liftwell There's anything wrong with describing yourself as Persian in the English language.
Given how ridiculously ancient that name is, it would be more historically wrong to call yourself "British" if you were from the UK than Persian from what is officially now known as the "Islamic Republic of Iran".
Since 1935, "Iran" as a name has unfortunate associations with Nazi Aryan, Islam (1979) and in English is constantly confused with Iraq - all things Iranians themselves are very much aware.
@utubesqueeze your British analogy is way off the mark. Especially considering the official name of the UK is " The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland." So it is still entirely relevant to refer to themselves as British. Since the term Iran originated in 1935 well before events in 1979 people should have a right to take that name back. Being confused with Iraq just shows pure ignorance of those too lazy to know better.
@liftwell "people should have a right to take that name back" <-- no one is stopping you or them from using "Iran/Iranian".
The only one deriding others for using the perfectly acceptable Persia/Persian name with an immense and well acknowledged heritage which they favor in English, is you. On top of that, you're the minority view, especially if you live in the West - so its you who has something to prove, instead of insulting others intelligence.
@utubesqueeze who says I'm not. and Secondly I might be in the minority view (of which cannot be proven anyway), but that does make my point less valid? Are you claiming that I can't express my point of view just because it might not be a majority point of view? I doubt most people even care about this or are aware of it.
As for insulting intelligence. Exactly point to where I have insulted their intelligence. All I have done is rebutt your points of view with a combination of rational argument and deriding laziness not by deriding intelligence. So are you saying it is acceptable for people to be lazy and not be aware of the world?
@utubesqueeze to be honest my initial remark came from what you call a "Persian" comedian (but he calls himself Iranian)" Omid Djalili. And it was meant to be light hearted. I honestly couldn't care less. But you just can't seem to take the joke and live with it.
so true loooool
