strange how even hardened sailors try and stay on theri sinking ship for as long as possible when they should be getting off it see how they are not launching any boats here or getting in the water when there are other ships present they are simply walking around the deck.
@WELLBRAN I am not sure about this, but I think that it has to do with the water current that pulls everything downwards(formed at the edges of the ship, thus the middle stays safe). So, you either get off the ship early and go away away from the ship as fast as possible so you won't get pulled, or wait till the last part of the ship (or at least the main deck, I think) has sunk with the boat nearby so you can float away safely with a behemoth diving underneath you.

@WELLBRAN Because you wouldn´t expect such a huge ship to topple over that fast, so they, of course, waited for the other ships to come near to rescue them (seawater is cold, and most probably, some couldn´t swim)...they only started to panic when the ship started to turn over faster.
And "unhardened" sailor would have probably jumped into the water as he heard "WE´VE BEEN HIT!"
@Chrinik everybody could swim, because it was expectations in austro-hungarian navy. However, the most ww1 era navy the swimming was not expectation from sailors.
Of course loss of life is the saddest thing but it is always sad to see a fine ship go down regardless of friend or foe - I believe that sailors in a lfe or death struggle still have their relief, and gladness tempered by saddness when they send an enemy ship to the bottom.

They sent hundred of thousand of young guys to die in the 1st world war just to make the people to "feel more italian" by fighting together with other "italians" .
Many people didn't want to fight the Austrian brothers (just 55 years before many of them were Austrian!)
I heard that the Carabinieri corps in ww1 were placed behind the ita lines and they used to shot at their own soldier who were retreating , to make them go on and fight the Austrians :(
The Viribus Unitis was sunked in the very last days of the first world war.The ship was in the port of Pola and the whole fleet turned on the lights because everybody knew that the war was over. But some italian soldier sneak in the port and placed a timed bomb on the Viribus Unitis. They had been caught by the slav soldiers and they told everything to the officers. Then the drunken sailors run for their life and they didnt do anything to save the ship. Probably 300-400 croatian died.
Ironically this fleet wasnt an austro-hungarian fleet any more, because the emperor gave the whole fleet to the young croatian country a few days before the terrorist attack.
So this was an another epic italian naval victory...

On the land, Austro-Hungary fought too many fronts not only one like Italy. The monarchy's main front was in the east against the russians. There the monarchy suffered huge losses.
On the sea unfortunately a betrayal happened, so the italians knew the monarchys fleets way and they amushed the Szent Istvan, but the two countries fleet never fought a sea battle...

Commander Luigi Rizzo, under heavy fire, made a direct attack and launched his 2 torpedoes from 100 mt, targeting the Szent Istvan. The 2nd MAS, targeted the Tegetthof hitting it, but his torpedoes did not explode, Rizzo's ones instead sank the other Austrian battleship.
That the sailors of the Szent Istvan may rest in peace. They were Croatian or Slovenian, but many of them, from Istria, Dalmatia or Adria, brought Italian names.

strange how even hardened sailors try and stay on theri sinking ship for as long as possible when they should be getting off it see how they are not launching any boats here or getting in the water when there are other ships present they are simply walking around the deck.

@WELLBRAN I am not sure about this, but I think that it has to do with the water current that pulls everything downwards(formed at the edges of the ship, thus the middle stays safe). So, you either get off the ship early and go away away from the ship as fast as possible so you won't get pulled, or wait till the last part of the ship (or at least the main deck, I think) has sunk with the boat nearby so you can float away safely with a behemoth diving underneath you.

@WELLBRAN Because you wouldn´t expect such a huge ship to topple over that fast, so they, of course, waited for the other ships to come near to rescue them (seawater is cold, and most probably, some couldn´t swim)...they only started to panic when the ship started to turn over faster.
And "unhardened" sailor would have probably jumped into the water as he heard "WE´VE BEEN HIT!"

Of course loss of life is the saddest thing but it is always sad to see a fine ship go down regardless of friend or foe - I believe that sailors in a lfe or death struggle still have their relief, and gladness tempered by saddness when they send an enemy ship to the bottom.

Vit-Ven was a 4 day battle. The Austro/Hun fought long but lost 35,000 dead and 300,000 captured. To say they were finished before this battle is not accurate.
The war EXPOSED Austrian weaknessess. Without the war your empire would have continued.

Entrance to the Adriatic was controlled by Italy in west and the allied controlled lower Balkans in east. Austrian Navy was closed in the Adriatic and inconsequential. No need for allies to confront them.
Austria kept its capital ships close to port. They understood small Italian torpedo boats to be very effective. The Szent Istvan.. great example.

The french tried to provoke a naval fight in 1914,but the monarchy didnt answered the challange. The italians never send any fleet to the adriatic.I dont know why, probably they remembered Lissa(1866).
All in all your country was lucky because they lost battle after battle but their allies could achive the victory against the central powers, so your country won as well. It is similar when they captured venice in 1866. Austria defeat Italy but Prussia defeat austria, so italy won again.

I am not angry because of your lack of historical knowledge.I write once again i hope you can understand it.Italy and AHM never fought any sea battle.On land Italy were crushed in 1917 near Caporetto. After the battle the italians shot their own fleeing soldiers and did other war crimes, but it changed nothing: their army was collapsed.A huge number of antant troops (english, french) could stopped the invasion near Piave river.In 1918 there were US forces here as well.

They sent hundred of thousand of young guys to die in the 1st world war just to make the people to "feel more italian" by fighting together with other "italians" .
Many people didn't want to fight the Austrian brothers (just 55 years before many of them were Austrian!)
I heard that the Carabinieri corps in ww1 were placed behind the ita lines and they used to shot at their own soldier who were retreating , to make them go on and fight the Austrians :(

The Viribus Unitis was sunked in the very last days of the first world war.The ship was in the port of Pola and the whole fleet turned on the lights because everybody knew that the war was over. But some italian soldier sneak in the port and placed a timed bomb on the Viribus Unitis. They had been caught by the slav soldiers and they told everything to the officers. Then the drunken sailors run for their life and they didnt do anything to save the ship. Probably 300-400 croatian died.

On the land, Austro-Hungary fought too many fronts not only one like Italy. The monarchy's main front was in the east against the russians. There the monarchy suffered huge losses.
On the sea unfortunately a betrayal happened, so the italians knew the monarchys fleets way and they amushed the Szent Istvan, but the two countries fleet never fought a sea battle...
