around 1998 their music was interesting and new but these days everyone can sound like this and i wonder why people copy so much the styles of afx, cylob, autechre and the rest because there are still so many options to go a new path in music but if one makes glitchy dubstep or whatever everyone else will copy this just 2 be part of a musical collective scene and thats not the idea of experimental musical art because most people have got no musical self-confidence and they want just applause
IDM is a phrase for dickheads by dickheads. Firstly it's not dance, and to snobbishly imply that all other electronic music you can dance to is dumb, is just plain ignorant. Call it electronica, experimental, ambient whatever. Only use IDM if you want to out yourself as a dickhead.
@Yonezzz mate music is what you make of it. And btw autechre, aphex, squarepusher have deep roots in techno & acid house, so it is dance. But that's not the point, in the end who cares what it's called? The best thing I ever learnt from listening to IDM is to just simply forgot about genres and names and stupid categories and just ...... listen... and if I like it I like it, if I don't I don't. simple as that! no point in getting worked up over things as silly as titles.
Dropp reminds me of standing in the parking lot of the horrible job I worked at when I first heard this EP, taking a break to watch the full moon. Like that moon then, it reminds me that this too shall pass.

TODAS A LA HOGUERAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!! SOIS LA BASURA DE LA SOCIEDAD SOIS LA SUCIEDAD SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
This song reminds me of the economic and social turmoil we are witnessing today. It really is a gem. Just close your eyes and envision the chaos yet retaining that peace of mind which always lurks in the background.
@stoph2 Yeah, my brother's been trying to show me the ropes. Shit's pretty complicated, but I understand a little bit. Recently though he turned me onto a program a lot like MaxMSP called "PureData", I guess it's what the original maker of MaxMSP went on to keep developing after he possibly sold the rights to Max or something like that. Seems pretty in-depth though, I just need to find the time and patience to really build a rad patch in it.
i cannot believe people say there is Nothing in common with autechre and aphex twin when they both have a few things in common. extreme repetitive feel, accompanied with sound effects of a variety of nature, lots of breaks, that dark kind echo, both the same type of music (instrument speaking i.e. electronic keyboard and computer music, accompanied by Squarepusher), also there are some techniques similar to Aphex when using hard deep dark sounds like Autechre's Paralel suns, to that of SAW(aphex

autechre does a good idm. those who say idm sounds stupid, only because they don't understand the intelligent genre idm, they are not supposed to listen to any electronic genre
@VariantNode i didn't mean that those who don't listen to idm are intelligent.
i meant that idm is the child of most of the early electronic genres, and if people who like those genres, then they should like idm as well. by the way i read a comment by someone who said idm sounds stupid. if we agree, then it would mean we don't like techno, ambient, house, experimental, electro, drum n bass and avant-garde, because idm takes elements of these genres.
@askadetra Ah, okay, I understand what you're saying. But I would argue that things that often get classed as "idm" could probably more easily be noted as "experimental", without insinuating intelligence one way or another. I think you'll find that just about any notable pioneer in the supposed genre of IDM (though I would say they are pioneers of experimenting), denies that they are part of any such category. This goes for Autechre, Aphex Twin, probably Squarepusher, etc.
@VariantNode you're wrong. idm is an experimental genre because it takes elements of experimental. but there are elements of other genres as well. techno, electro and drum n bass elements are used for the idm's complex beats. house and ambient elements are used for the melodies of idm. so all these things complex beats, melodies combined with the elements of experimental are the reason why this genre is called intelligent dance music. discussion closed.
@askadetra You're clearly overseeing where fact divides from opinion. Music categorization is based on broad generalizations related to the tonality, rhythm, texture, and whatnot. I can assure you that Autechre would prefer not to be called "idm" and instead to be recognized simply as music. And when I say "experimental", I mean music with means to experiment with sound. I don't really see it as a genre, I'm basically using it as an adjective to describe forward thinkers
@VariantNode@VariantNode If anything, Autechre has relevant roots in hip-hop, techno, acid, ambient, and just overall electronica music. Quote from AFX: "I just think it's really funny to have terms like that. It's basically saying, 'this is intelligent and everything else is stupid.' It's really nasty to everyone else's music. (laughs) It makes me laugh, things like that. I don't use names. I just say that I like something or I don't."
One more quote, from wiki real quick, on IDM: "Stylistically, IDM tends to rely upon individualistic experimentation rather than on a particular set of musical characteristics." Also: "Usage of the term "Intelligent Dance Music" has been criticised by electronic musicians such as Aphex Twin and is seen by artists such as Mike Paradinas as being peculiar to the U.S"
@VariantNode you're a total idiot. musical professionals and djs wouldn't even read your crap. you know nothing to argue. the truth is that i know the facts, while your opinion is not based on facts and you even don't know personally autechre to tell what he wouldn't want his music to be called. it's idm you jerk. it's a combination of techno, drum n bass, experimental, ambient, house, avant-garde and electro. so shut up and the discussion is closed from now.
@askadetra First of all, I find it highly ironic that you just called me an idiot, and then referred to Autechre as a "him". Autechre is made up of two people, you know that right? Rob Brown and Sean Booth. You're right, I don't know Autechre personally, but what I do know is music. I am a music producer myself and will soon have a track released on a label co-owned by Unique 3, which if you look into him, you'll find he actually has an autechre remix of one of his tracks from back in 89.
@askadetra Here, I got this directly from an interview, it's on barcodezine but youtube wont let me link it, look it up if you want. So stop telling me I'm "stupid" and that this discussion is "over" just because you say it is: Rob Brown on idm: "I mean I hate that term, when it was coined in the early or mid-nineties, it was already outdated, it was a silly term." Now will you stop arguing?
@VariantNode well smart ass. you're stupid to believe what one fucker said instead of believing more djs and electronic music experts who deal with the history of electronic genres, in this case idm. then you better tell rob brown to kill himself, because he didn't created this music called intelligent dance music. he may hate the term but it doesn't mean that all people must listen to him and believe him. now you got the point?
@askadetra You're being so terribly ironic that it hurts. You're the one telling me what IDM is, I'm telling you that what people perceive to be IDM is actually an interchangeable point of variance that, yes, has roots in things like early techno music (undeniably), but is grounded in experimentation. YOU said Autechre did "good IDM", I was just telling you that Rob Brown, one of the two musicians IN the group said specifically that they are not IDM.
@askadetra You said "IDM" had roots in a bunch of different things, and I agree, but it's not always those things. I'm just saying, what is generally called IDM is usually something innovative that has roots, but the roots aren't always the same. For example, where's the drum n bass you mentioned in this? Nowhere, because in this particular "IDM" track they didn't use drum n bass as a focal point of production. Other idm songs, sure, like I said, it can be anything.
@VariantNode shut up idiot. shut up is for everyone who keep arguing. even in this track there is a drum n bass element, but you're not musical and you can't understand it. idm is called intelligent dance music and takes elements of house, techno, dnb, ambient avant garde, experimental and electro. typical for idm the beats are replacing the strong time and the weak time of the beat and also typically for idm is to change from electro beat to dnb for example or to mix them. so shut up.
@askadetra Damn you are just abrasive and outright ignorant. I've backed up everything I've said with sources, and you still haven't provided me with shit. You really have no grounds to call me non-musical. I'm a trained jazz drummer, and I produce hip-hop, acid, dubstep, house, and breakbeat music, and I'm becoming a well respected DJ and producer on the West Coast. IDM doesn't really mean anything, but if I have to define it, it's quite simply put a fusion of any electronic genres.
@VariantNode where are your sources yu fucking loser stupid you are not musically educated and still arguing here. i'm educated and you're ignorant jerk. go kill yourself. you can't tell what idm is. you shut your mouth loser
@askadetra That's real mature. I already provided you with my sources via quotes from "idm" pioneers, and a straight up definition of the genre on wikipedia. I can't post links in the comments section last I checked, so I'll message you all my sources if that's what you want. To anyone reading this shite, he also just pm'd me telling me to kill myself. Great job making yourself look like a tool.
@VariantNode you fucking loser. shut up and stick your sources up your ass. it's not even sources by pioneers of this music. you only wish to get opinions by djs who you call pioneers. you don't even know who created this intelligent electronic genre. so shut up already
@askadetra Lol, yeah I do. The guy that created the "idm mailing list" is the person who coined the term, not even an artist of the genre. Look it up, dude.
@Omoraru Yeah no worries, I gave up after I spent a good half hour or so rounding up legitimate sources of knowledge like he asked and then he told me he didn't read any of them.
@VariantNode you got a coward, oh i see you are so gentle to me, fucking retard. no one can tell who coined the term, idm was created years ago, and coined by its pioneer. that you believe some things not based on evidences is your problem. and why did you give thumbs up for this loser you faggots, ah? you are stupid as him. bunch of idiots
@askadetra Holy shit, you are absolutely, undeniably fucking retarded. You say I don't provide any evidence only because you don't read anything I say. I provided you with a shit ton of sources that are ALL legitimate sources of music knowledge, and you didn't read any of them because you'd rather just type insults and assume it was all bullshit. And yes, people DO know who coined the term IDM, I told you to look it up and I bet you didn't. I'm done here this is laughable
wow. i didn't know that idm has crazier beats than techno. after all idm is the most complex and intelligent electronic genre. as i know the genre combines elements and especially hybrid beats of house, techno and drum n bass.
from my point of view, the first sound is not a bass, because it is a piano synth. however, it is difficult to find a simple and precise sound like that. I would appreciate if someone could give me information. thanks in advance.
When I was younger, I loved stupid trance music. Now that I'm older I play autechre, Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada. What a wasted youth! This shit never gets old!.
@fivefoflow This is the internet, you don't have to write every sentence perfectly. You obviously understood what I said so why are you complaining. The fact you spelt "U shud et a dik." incorrectly after saying not to listen to people who misspell words means I shouldn't listen to your immature comment?
Enjoy your fun filled life of telling people what to do behind your computer screen.
@Pikkkachew hahahah! Perfect. Didn't even realize I knew that you knew how to spell and that I was only making fun of you. getting a few laugh at your expense here, and then again after the realization that you couldn't comprehend the actual nature of my comment was not only to mock you, but also to be ironic, hoping that you'd take me seriously and present yourself as a complete moron. Good job guy, fell right into it. :D
@fivefoflow PS, I often make fun of people in RL, and i'd be more than willing to call you lame to your face. And i'm sure you'd just walk away without throwing anything back.
@salojan Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, Amon Tobin, Clark. Try those to get started, i won't give you anymore suggestions because I think it will be better for you to explore other related artists yourself. Good luck =D
Autecher is alright but never be what Tobin is...just aint on the same level...take that back aint even in the same fucking phone book . thats how much better and orignal amon is...plus he can take a washing machine and find a place for it musicly in one of his pieces....anybody can do what autchre does...not everybody can be like amon...
amon does alot of real sampling, autechre are more about synthesis. especially this. its generative. those are 2 completely different worlds, theres no need for comparison on that level
@tomorrowinjapan haha at first I thought this guy was serious too, but after reading it over a couple of times surely he is joking. And if he isn't joking, no point in even trying to tell him otherwise because he obviously won't get it.
@Truestick1 As an electronic producer and sound designer myself i can tell you that the ability to sample and modulate field recordings definitely comes second to the engineering that goes into Autechre's synthesis.. Take a look at their max/MSP patches and their equipment and see how much more creative and technically advanced they are compared to Amon. You compare Amons latest album to Autechres work in the 90's!! They have been light years ahead for f**king decades!
equitment has jack shit to do with it... im talking about the deepth of the music... autecher problem is that its doesnt captivate you like amons does, its to flat and and i am comparing to amons mid 90's music when he got his break. still got these wankers beat ya nit. end of chat
People must understand that not everyone can comprehend this stuff. If it was mainstream there would be absolutely no fun to looking around for tracks and knowing truly complex music

@VariantNode you fucking loser. shut up and stick your sources up your ass. it's not even sources by pioneers of this music. you only wish to get opinions by djs who you call pioneers. you don't even know who created this intelligent electronic genre. so shut up already
askadetra 4 months ago
@askadetra Lol, yeah I do. The guy that created the "idm mailing list" is the person who coined the term, not even an artist of the genre. Look it up, dude.
VariantNode 4 months ago 13
@VariantNode He's obviously stupid. Let him rant.
Omoraru 3 months ago
@Omoraru Yeah no worries, I gave up after I spent a good half hour or so rounding up legitimate sources of knowledge like he asked and then he told me he didn't read any of them.
VariantNode 3 months ago
@VariantNode you got a coward, oh i see you are so gentle to me, fucking retard. no one can tell who coined the term, idm was created years ago, and coined by its pioneer. that you believe some things not based on evidences is your problem. and why did you give thumbs up for this loser you faggots, ah? you are stupid as him. bunch of idiots
askadetra 3 months ago
@askadetra Holy shit, you are absolutely, undeniably fucking retarded. You say I don't provide any evidence only because you don't read anything I say. I provided you with a shit ton of sources that are ALL legitimate sources of music knowledge, and you didn't read any of them because you'd rather just type insults and assume it was all bullshit. And yes, people DO know who coined the term IDM, I told you to look it up and I bet you didn't. I'm done here this is laughable

wow. i didn't know that idm has crazier beats than techno. after all idm is the most complex and intelligent electronic genre. as i know the genre combines elements and especially hybrid beats of house, techno and drum n bass.
askadetra 5 months ago
from my point of view, the first sound is not a bass, because it is a piano synth. however, it is difficult to find a simple and precise sound like that. I would appreciate if someone could give me information. thanks in advance.

Pikkkachew 6 months ago
@Pikkkachew Hey, simple rule on the internet. Never listen to a person that can't spell the words "you" or "should". U shud et a dik.
fivefoflow 6 months ago
@fivefoflow This is the internet, you don't have to write every sentence perfectly. You obviously understood what I said so why are you complaining. The fact you spelt "U shud et a dik." incorrectly after saying not to listen to people who misspell words means I shouldn't listen to your immature comment?
Enjoy your fun filled life of telling people what to do behind your computer screen.
Pikkkachew 6 months ago
@Pikkkachew hahahah! Perfect. Didn't even realize I knew that you knew how to spell and that I was only making fun of you. getting a few laugh at your expense here, and then again after the realization that you couldn't comprehend the actual nature of my comment was not only to mock you, but also to be ironic, hoping that you'd take me seriously and present yourself as a complete moron. Good job guy, fell right into it. :D
fivefoflow 6 months ago
@fivefoflow PS, I often make fun of people in RL, and i'd be more than willing to call you lame to your face. And i'm sure you'd just walk away without throwing anything back.

Truestick1 9 months ago
@Truestick1
amon does alot of real sampling, autechre are more about synthesis. especially this. its generative. those are 2 completely different worlds, theres no need for comparison on that level
Quadrange 9 months ago 2
@Truestick1 you must be joking..
tomorrowinjapan 9 months ago
@tomorrowinjapan haha at first I thought this guy was serious too, but after reading it over a couple of times surely he is joking. And if he isn't joking, no point in even trying to tell him otherwise because he obviously won't get it.
Jez4prez 9 months ago
@Truestick1 As an electronic producer and sound designer myself i can tell you that the ability to sample and modulate field recordings definitely comes second to the engineering that goes into Autechre's synthesis.. Take a look at their max/MSP patches and their equipment and see how much more creative and technically advanced they are compared to Amon. You compare Amons latest album to Autechres work in the 90's!! They have been light years ahead for f**king decades!
emotekon 9 months ago 19
equitment has jack shit to do with it... im talking about the deepth of the music... autecher problem is that its doesnt captivate you like amons does, its to flat and and i am comparing to amons mid 90's music when he got his break. still got these wankers beat ya nit. end of chat
Truestick1 9 months ago
@emotekon are you saying you have access to their max/msp patches? id love to see them
ardotadot 6 months ago
