Maajid Nawaz must have been seriously brainwashed in Egypt. Or else offered a great deal of money.
If he is opposing - as he seems to imply when explaining his "4-point identifier" criteria for identifying 'extremists' - the implementation of Shari'ah & therefore re-establishment of Khilafah, he is putting himself effectively out of Islam.
After that, there is no more debate to be had with Quilliam. They represent something other than Islam and thus should be denounced right left and centre
Its a Gold digging organisation. Bunch of idiots sucking up to the government and helping zionist media. I hope when we deal with the BNP EDL UKIP we should then deal with Quilliam Foundation and make sure people expose them.
Melanie Philips not in any way better than Anjem Choudary and the "Islamists" Nawaz is talking about. She is an extremist, just from the opposite side. In my opinion, Hibut-Tahrir, Al Muhaijeroun, Islam4UK and all Neo-Con and Zionist parties should be banned and their members should be purged from society. The Quilliam Foundation should not just speak out against Islamic extremists, but against Judeochristian Extremists as well.
Maajid Nawaz has absolutely no reason to be a 'government stooge'. He denounced the narrative upon his return to the Western world; that is, before he and his organization received money from the government. He's incredibly articulate and argued substantial points in this interview. Why can't we just hear the interview without the biased captions? And the fact that he isn't too popular with the prominent Muslim population doesn't mean his arguments should be dismissed.
@juju52291 ... Why wouldn't he have reason to be a 'government stooge'? Why wouldn't he want his very vocal agenda given funding and political clout by the government? Plenty of ignorant people are articulate; It's just a useful tool in attempting to convince people of your credibility. The fact he's not popular with the Muslim population indicates he doesn't understand the perspective of Muslims, or be given the amount of airtime he is over and above other equally articulate Muslims.
@oclandestin Like I said, from the start, he denounced the Islamist narrative well before he received money from the government. He has been battling extremism for a long time right now. And again, just because he's not popular with the masses doesn't mean he's wrong. The Nazi's (another extremist group) convinced a lot of Germans that Jews and ethnic minorities were the cause of their suffering. When people are scared and angry, they tend to forsake rational thought.
@juju52291 ... Your first point only proves that his viewpoint aligned him well with the New Labour government (who aligned themselves with the US Neo-Cons) at the time. Note, we haven't heard much from Quilliam in the UK since the general election in May. And what an interesting point about the Nazis, because if you listen to the 'war on terror' rhetoric that's still around, especially in the media, then it's clear that Muslims and Islam are being demonised just as the Nazis demonised the Jews.
@oclandestin I agree that Muslims have been demonized in the media. However, I hardly believe it's part of a political agenda. I think it has more to do with ratings. People tune in more often if there's a story involving terrorists and these terrorists tend to be Muslim. What they don't report are the acts of terror on the 'other' side (Israel, NATO etc.). but either way, extremism is not the answer. Whether it's blowing up the Twin Towers or the Gaza Strip.
Almost EVERY sentence spurted by Nawaz is a blatant lie.
I'm surprised the interviewer didn't pick up on any of them.
All Terrorists are Islamists? If Islamists beleive in the Quran then they are not allowed to harm even the hair of an innocent person. Terrorists have the opposite idea so how can all Terrorists be Islamists.
Is he also forgetting Timothy McVeigh who did to Okhalama Bombing - was he an Islamist.
Every sentence that he spoke could be torn apart but wasn't.
quilliam are disgusting sell outs, they do not represent the mainstream muslim community and i want them out of the public eye and into some hole where they belong. they are outcasts, their views both political and theological are deplorable and the sad thing is majid nawaaz and his cabin boy ed, are making £110,000 a year from this farce of an organisation.
If the Quilliam Foundation does not represent the Muslim mainstream? Then who does then? Anjem Choudary, who refuses to condemn the London Bombings? Abu Hamza who had sympathy for al Qaeda or Omar Bakri who fled like a coward to Lebanon where he gets persecuted by the Lebanese government for being too extreme? Are these the "mainstream" you are talking about?
@DeathToNeoCons ... You're going from one extreme to the other, which seems to suggest you have a very polarised view of who Muslims are. The vast majority of Muslims in the UK would neither sympathise with Quilliam's agenda, or that of Choudary's or Abu Hamza's. Unfortunately, both extremes are given the most attention in the media, because that's what suits a sensationalist agenda and sells newspapers... totally igoring and misrepresenting the views of the mainstream and majority.
Melanie Phillips is a rabid Zionist so it is strange she should be a supporter of Quilliam. Legit question. Why Nawaz is so nervous about it, runs away from the point without any explanation?
The fact that Melanie Phillipes "a rabid Zionist" supports Quilliam, along with Right-wing pro-war supporters like Michael Gove shows exactly what the Quilliam Foundation stands for. They're also funded and promoted by the government, the same government that sided with Bush in the 'war on terror'.
@oclandestin Thanks, good posting - I'd heard of Quilliam but didn't know much about them apart from the anti-Islamist rhetoric and that Nawaz had been a militant in the past. Phillips seems quite pathological in her response to any Muslim organisation at all usually whatever it stands for, so I was surprised by her actually supporting Quilliam.
George Bush has met with Muslim Ulema, ditto Tony Blair. They have both also explicitly expressed admiration for Islam. The Radical Middle Way org has reportedly received gov funding. Should we judge an org solely because it has some neo-con supporters? Also it's strange that you are demonising the Quilliam foundation for having right wing support but then you are using right wing publications like 'the times' to support your ad hominem video.

Just as government has destroyed Christianity, so it now trys to dilute Islam.
