I don't think you should assume which were Beethoven's intentions. We cannot say that. What I see is a tempo marking which says Adagio. To be half of the tempo as you suggested it should be written Largo.
It is common to see past mistakes creating a line of interpretation. I will always try to follow the score because that tells me more about what are Beethoven's intentions than lstening to past recordings of that work.
Thank you for your comment. The beginning is a Adagio which should be something in between quarter note equals 66 to 76. I did it 56, so I can't see why you think it is fast. Many other conductors they subdivide this passage, but I believe they are performing it too slow.
Despite the beginning being a bit fast for some, the entire piece was played very well by the whole orchestra. I enjoyed it.

I think it would've been nicer if there wasn't this huge long thing of them tuning...
But other than that, it sounds pretty cool. Sadly, I'm not in orchestra. :)

hard to here...and do we really have to hear them tuning up?

beggining should be nearly half the speed, that way it is REALLY dramatic like beethoven always intends.

beggining is too fast, not all music is about who can play the fastest, but who can play the most beautifully.
