Very touching performance. The voices of all those people and many among them children singing sounds heavenly. I am very curious as to what the priest is saying/instructing to them before and between the singing. I don't know Portuguese and can't understanding anything other then the beautiful Shema.

In many christian texts on sundays "the people of israel" is mentioned as a part of the christian identity, so its understandable that the Church uses traditional jewish songs as something quite normal.
And here they just say that there is only One god, that is not specifically jew.

@FredrikHeby Well, the priest is speaking in Portuguese while they children are singing, or chanting if you will, in Hebrew but the dialect isn't "pure" Hebrew so it's more akin to "Sephardi".

Hi, I unfortunately do not understand what they say (except the song part) but what I can tell u for sure is that as this is from Devarim/Deuteronomy and as the Torah /Pentacheuch is for both Xians and Jewish ppl, there is nothing really surprising. My mother who is a fundamentalist Christians sings this in French too. For Chritians consider themselves to be monotheists and real good Christians acknowledge that the Jews are still the chosen people, even if cursed.

I wonder how many of these people are Ladino Jews- who are direct decendents of Jews who were FORCED to convert during the inquisition periods. Very touching performance. The voices of all those people and many among them children singing sounds heavenly. I am very curious as to what the priest is saying/instructing to them before and between the singing. I don't know Portuguese and can't understanding anything other then the beautiful Shema.

And maybe you don't know but the shema comes from the Bible, which is not only the book of jews.
In many christian texts on sundays "the people of israel" is mentioned as a part of the christian identity, so its understandable that the Church uses traditional jewish songs as something quite normal.
And here they just say that there is only One god, that is not specifically jew.

@FredrikHeby Well, the priest is speaking in Portuguese while they children are singing, or chanting if you will, in Hebrew but the dialect isn't "pure" Hebrew so it's more akin to "Sephardi".

Hi, I unfortunately do not understand what they say (except the song part) but what I can tell u for sure is that as this is from Devarim/Deuteronomy and as the Torah /Pentacheuch is for both Xians and Jewish ppl, there is nothing really surprising. My mother who is a fundamentalist Christians sings this in French too. For Chritians consider themselves to be monotheists and real good Christians acknowledge that the Jews are still the chosen people, even if cursed.

Although you're not Jews (and I actually don't care), It's beautiful to hear from people of other beliefs saying this prayer (Shemá) with purity of heart. You don't have to be Jew to say it. You just have to believe it.

This is a Catholic chapel and the priest is a Catholic one that just want to show that between Judaism and Catholicism are many things in common.

Yes, he was speaking Portuguese. This is amazing; almost a reversal of what happened 500 years ago, when Jews had to come to the churches and recited their confession of faith (by force). Now they are trying to appreciate us. Thanks for posting this. My father's family is descended from anusim of Portugal.

Intersting to note that although the passage is the cornerstone of the Jewish faith, it is also held sacred by both Christian and Islamic faiths. It is the statement that there is only 1 G-d - regarldess of hwo you refer to G-d as G-d or Allah. Kudos to the priest in a nice effort to break the fear of the unkonwn stranger gap by including the jewish version in his prayer service.
When G-d is one as the prayer states then all of his creation regarldess of creed are also one.

I wonder how many of these people are Ladino Jews- who are direct decendents of Jews who were FORCED to convert during the inquisition periods. As much as it is promising to see modern christians now looking positively at Jews, history has shown us time and again how easily things can change. As a proud Jew, I find it hard to see these changes and wonder why it took so long for those who wanted us all dead to finally wake up ( besides the muslims who still do!!)
