"Cheesy" or not, Irwin HAD to convert the series to full color for season two, because all three networks agreed to schedule 100% color programming in prime-time for the fall of 1966. He sold CBS the idea for the show while they were still a "black and white" network in early 1965. Even though after they began programming about half of their fall schedule in color, Allen continued to film it in black and white- primarily because it saved him money.
Ironically, the decision to make the first season in black-and-white made the series more timeless. It looks less cheesy than many of the color sci-fi spectacles that came after it. The black-and-white actually gives the first season a more classic feel than it would otherwise have had had it been shot in color.

The music used in this "demo reel" came from the CBS music library (most of the cues were originally used on "THE TWILIGHT ZONE").

some of the music for the pilots and show were written by Bernard Herrmann for such movies as
The Day The earth Stood Still and Garden of Evil. Cuts from those scores showed up on
the show all the time. One good example is "Follow the Leader" at the end of the first season.

Fasinating. If only the failed remake pilot had shown more imagination
