He can talk about American rights all he wants, but his basic tenets are opposed to American rights and the constitution. One example should suffice. Islamic jurisprudence denies a defendent the right to counsel, and the right to a trial by jury.
@CaptainSandyHook We Americans not only talk about rights of people in other countries, we also intervene and legitimize the use of violence in the name of lets say Iraqi rights, Afghani rights and so on!
It's perfectly normal that others talk about American rights. I think that's part of the global conversation.
i hate this guy,he thinks he is wise.i have listened to several of his interviews, but he is no way near the likes of hitchens, rashdie, douglas murry.he is a dumb trying to dececive the ignorant west on the true color of islam.
@TheEparanor If you have watched his interviews, how can you say whether he is wise or not. Read his books, if you're open minded, and just don't make assumptions about someone you barely know. Most of the interviews, or debates he appeared in, people try to attack him, without even managing to understand the sense of his beliefs and ideas. Truth hurts, and so many people don't like him because he has the guts to - at least - create conversations about things that could make the world better.

I don't think Taqqiya is shia belief, but is used for all muslims when necessary. Isn't that what the son of Sumeyye, the 1st lady martyr, did when he was threatened to be killed too for his faith?
After listening to Mr Ramadan I am more hopeful than ever that faith communities can learn to live together in peace and harmony as their creators would have wished them to do. Thinkers on the caliber of Ramadan should be cherished and held in the highest regard by all those who lay claim to the name "civilized"
Below is the English versions of the Quran verse 4:34. This passage deal with issue of wife beating in Islam. A classic!
"Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. ... As to those women on whom part you fear disloyalty and ill conduct, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their beds, (and last) BEAT them. "
Where religion comes in, common sense, reason and philosophy is forced out. Sorry to say but in spite off all his knowledge of Western philosophy, with his "higher" islamic moral, Ramadan is practising Taqqiya and vague speech ad summum. He didn´t condemn stoning women (adulteresses) to death when challenged by Nicolas Sarkozy in debate.
An antidote to the Us vs. Them discourse. Ramadan reminds us that Islam is an integral part of Western heritage and that by treating Muslims as "other" we are denying part of ourselves. To young Muslims-- and to all of us who are not of the majority faith, whether Jewish, Hindu or atheist-- he counsels, religion and culture are not identical. Accept what is good and reject what is unjust here and back home. According to your principles: ask, in their light is what we are doing right or wrong?

And apparently an ardent supporter of Sharia law, which he was unable to show is in any way consistent with the American legal system.

@CaptainSandyHook you have not done your research properly then :) he has a very different concept of Sharia.

Why does he talk of American rights; absurd since he's not American.

What a joke. An apologist for a doctrine founded by a child molester, robber, rapist, murderer and, above all, a slaver.

@KarlMartell732 Taqqiya is a shia belief, the challenge here is to bring your proofs if you are among the truthful.
