  • can you buy a stock diesel ranger or all these done aftermarket one offs nice truck

  • @onetoughtechie it was a stock option a long time ago.

only place you can get em now is overseas

  • I can burn vegetable oils in this old normaly aspirated diesel. I can even go 110km/hr but not on hills.

Supposedly, the truck came with ~60 horsepower when new.

    We are cancer.....

  • @tinkeramblin I wish I could get my mits on one.

  • @megawelderguy Mine's in Quebec sort of abandoned. as of yesterday. It's available. I think it dropped a rod or something after 66700 and some KMs.

  • Diesel emision can cause cancer !

  • well your a huge gapping pussy!

  • naaaaah diesel emmisions are good for you and less poluting than gas emissions, it just smells better thats all

  • 49bhp I read some where for this truck/pickup!!!

they look good though, they need a 6.2 diesel.

  • Bullshyt

  • Can you get 100kph with it. I know my Ranger with the 2.3 is luck to do 120 on the highway. Still probably get better mileage than any modern truck!

  • i have an 1983 ford ranger 165 hp 4 speed 2,337,312 miles and 41 to the gallon it had an experimental motor that ford put out only 500 were made 10 are left in exsistance

  • do you have a production number? 165 out of a 2.3 from Ford is alot

  • 2.3 turbo?

  • Still sounds like its a bit much from an early 2.3

  • the 2.3 I4 engines r used in mustangs with a turbo evidently, they were also used in race sierras pre-cosworth.

    350bhp full race!

    160bhp standard!

its the 41mpg which is hard to believe.

u can get over 160bhp from a 2.0 I4 "pinto" with 45dcoe, 285 cam and gasflowed head etc. quite easily, guzzle fuel though.

  • yeah, but Ford didnt build an experamenal Ranger with any of that

  • U can get a 2.3 petrol ranger now in england, but it has no turbo.

    I wonder?

I make it a rule never to say something doesnt exist just because I havent seen it.

on the other hand, there r a lot of bullshitters in the world!

  • Yeah you could get one here for the last 26 years, They never made an experamental ranger with the 2.3t, The only experamental rangers I remember are 302s

  • the 2.3 u get now is a 16 valver btw, thats a newish engine I think.

  • Yeah, and I would expect decent hps out of it, not not an older unit

  • I have a magazine with a 2.3 duratorq fitted to a mk1 escort with throttle bodies, fancy cams etc with 250bhp!

  • oh yeah! I like Fords 2.3(all of them), they have an infinite number of possibilitys because of the sheer number of other motor that use the Ford 2.3 as a template, they also run forever

  • I like the diesels best.

I have a shitty 1.8 non turbo with 60bhp as standard.

turned pump up to max and get 0-60 in around 10-11 seconds, not to bad?

  • not bad, I got a 97 F350 7.3 5spd that will run 0-60 in about 7-8sec

  • 7.3idi or duramax, duramax is the ford one right?

That sounds more like it for a 7.3!

  • Duramax is the Chevy diesel! Mine is a 7.3 powerstroke

  • ha! I can never remember which is which, I live in the UK u see.

A bloke owned a ford 7.3 and I said "is this duramax?" he said "yes!" lol, very rare here, that was an ambulance box on a pickup by the way, no turbo and mechanical pump with some electronics on the pump, would that be idi or powerstroke? or did powerstroke have turbo only?

  • IDI, any Ford 7.3 diesel before 94ish is an IDI, Powerstrokes are just IDIs with turbos and upgraded injectors

  • powerstroke are direct injection I believe and u can get turbo idi engines, but the main thing is that powerstrokes all have turbos right?

  • yes, you can put a Turbo on the IDI engine, but Im not 100%sure they came like that, and All Powerstrokes are turbo

  • I saw a website and it showed the turbo system for an idi, had cast manifolds going up back of block to single turbo in the centre of the V.

I know for made lower compression pistons for the idi to take turbo so they might have been a factory fit, I dont know.

I heard that they can self destruct with turbo on the high CR pistons if u boost to high but they go really fast!

Im from UK so know very little about them.

u understand why Im interested; 25mpg, v8 and diesel, could u ask for more?!

  • Thats a Banks turbo kit, you can swap the turbos from the Powerstroke 7.3s right into an older IDI 7.3. The IDI runs at a higer compression ratio, but it shouldnt hurt your turbo much at all, If compression is an issue, a good kit will have a blow-of valve that will release any pressure above say, 29PSI. My truck gets around 27ish, and will run 15s in the quartermile

  • u can get idi with lower compression pistons evidently from the makers, theres a few turbo IDI's on here, theyre labeled like its standard, I dont know.

  • I did a little asking, and the max boost you could use in an IDI was 10psi, and apparantly Ford offerd a dealer installed turbo kit from ATS from 89-94

  • good, at least I didnt dream it!

  • you can still buy the ATS IDI 7.3 non turbo kit, and also one for 6.9(all 6.9 are non turbo) i believe they may even be the same kit

  • Yeah, If im correct, the 7.3 is just a 6.9 bored out a bit, and from what Diesel power says, the ATS kit is the same

  • yeah thats where my knowledge is from also, i read the story haha

  • 2,000,000 miles??? Didn't see that one coming.
