Ki nga whakaaro, he ataahua. I maringi mai he roimata, i te mea ka pa mai te pouri, te mamae ki te ngakau i te kite i a Puhi e tiaki i tana poai, i a ia e kaha mahi i ana mahi i waenga i nga aahuatanga kino o tana iwi.. I love this movie, because it shows the actual Puhi n Niki, and that just tops everything of!' He aitanga tenei no Tuhoe ki Ruatoki, ki Ruatahuna, whakawhiti ana kiWhakatohea.
this movie made me cry ,what a beautiful, strong, maori women puhi was, she led such a hard life but she always had the courage to carry on just like a lot of our old kuia back in those days ,she loved her children dearly through life and death, shes a big part of our history as maori ,after watching the movie i have a better understanding of the prophet rua ,and what life was like up in the uruwera ,vincent you deserve a big fat award for this !!!
In Spring One Plants Alone was one of the best student films ever made and I'm sorry I missed this but the time will come. If you're reading this Vincent, thank you.
i saw it on an air NZ flight. Puhi lived the most amazing life, a very tragic one, but her determination to go on inspired me to never worry about my troubles. when i compare the easiness of my life to hers... aue! a MUST SEE
Tumeke, I am going to watch this! I miss home! I also write maori history stories of my own both fictional/non-fictional. It truly would inspire me more.
Thank you Vincent. I saw the film tonight. You took me back to the early 1980s, my passion for Rua Kenana's story, the deep impression made by your film In Spring One Plants Alone and a road journey through the Urewera. Like you, I came full circle with Rain of the Children. An artistic triumph that left me wiping tears. An historical statement that will cause many to understand the resonance that the 2007 police raids have for Tuhoe.
I saw this 2day... and wen it finished and every1 started leaving the theatre, i overheard this white girl at bak of me say "That was the most boring movie I seen in my life!"..... she said that 2 her boyfriend who was Maori, I hope he leaves her!
Tena koe nga uri o Tuhoe, I went to the premier screening in Aucks, and man I gotta say the moment I sat down to watch the movie, those memories started coming back I lived in the house that nanny Puhi was in back in 1969-1970 with my koroua and kuia (Hiramana & Tawai)and went to school in Matahi, to see the old homestead which is still standing today, I have lovely memories of that place, my koro lighting the fire for my bath, a dirt floor I can go on....
Ae kia ora, cannot say anything negative about the movie, very moving bought back heaps of memories. there is one korero I would like to emphasise and that is two my whanau who blame their mate hinengaro on Nanny and Niki they know who I am talking about. they must remember as tamariki we were not exposed to their behaviour as much even you the ones I am talking about should know that. If I remember your nanny send you away as a teenager. next time think before you korero.
Hi there, the DVD should be out in stores early next year. In the meantime it is playing at this years Auckland International Film Festival in July. Cheers
Tino pouri ne? I was very young when nanny Puhi was alive. Niki I remembered the most. The movie/doco made me tangi abit. To see Matahi and her whare just made me cry.
You'll see nan's neighbours too. Henare, Maria and Dawson. Nga mokopuna....lol.
So moving and yet so tragic with what this kuia went through. One thing she had was what some of us struggle to hold on to....and that's the mana to get back up on her feet and fight another day.
This film will no doubt may me abit teary eyed.....because this is where i grew up. My family are acting on the film, but it will take me back to the memories of Niki and of course nanny Puhi. To everyone who took part in the film, congratulations and best of luck with the awards in Australia and anywhere there after.
Kia Ora I cannot wait to see this, a huge congrats to Mr Ward, what a honour it would be to make this movie; to actually document and make a film for all to see and learn some important Maori history, congrats to him,WAT A STORY !!!!!!!!! xxxx
