Hmm... I think Naruto really respects Shikamaru in the anime. And I think that Naruto brings out the more motivated side of Shika. Just imagine: Shikamaru actually makes Naruto use his brain and Naruto makes Shikamaru an active person! They just fit so well together. They've already established a good friendship in the anime, so I can definitley imagine how interesting their interactions would be if they were a couple.
Plus, they look so cute together!

Your explanation got me hooked on this pairing now.
How could I not notice that? I was looking for somone to pair Shikamru up who would actually motivate him, yet the answer was right under my nose.
One question. Sorry if it sounds kind of perverted, though. Who would be on top?

As for your one question:

Naruto would ride Shikamaru. Totally.

The only yaoi pairing where Naruto would be on top (I think). Shikamaru's way too lazy to be on top I suppose.
