  • Yay!! Finally a program that does just what I want. Great work and thanks for telling us about it!

  • Thanks Nixie, just what I was looking for. You rock =D

  • i would like to touch ur 64 bit 3 ghz processor

  • 5 ppl are gay

  • more videos u sexy explainer

  • do u have a video about starting useing linux because i dont even know how to install flashplayer for firefox or listem to music im a windows suer but i want somethign free and not as shit also i like playing minecraft and cant figure out how to install java

  • Nice review. I'm a beginner in linux. I saw you flipped your webcam; how do you do that? When I install GUVC, it's upside down, I don't know how to turn it around. I just found out it's the same in my skype. So how do I turn it right side up? I have a fujitsu lh531 laptop. Thank you. I use linux mint 12 btw. Thank you in advance

  • download?

  • He Nixie, thanks for the tip. Good research, thanks.

  • So it's free?

  • also, btw.. you're too cute.

  • ok, answer me pls.. do you have anything that works like webcammax for ubuntu, also cam studio, I want to able to broadcast videos through webcam like yahoo and also record webcams lke camstudio does.

    thanks

  • Well I get 6.5fps @ 360x296 on my 10 year old logitech webcam.

It doesn't work with my crappy easycap usb capture card though. The only thing that manages to support it is mplayer and mencoder.

  • You won't find GUVCview if you search GUVCviewer. Remove the 're' off the end and you'll find it on the store. Pedantic I know, but it's name is guvcview. Not guvcviewer.

  • good video *favs it* but my webcam is only showing a black screen. this happens in 4 different recording programs. the sound function of the camera works fine and i havnt changed any settings since i last used the camera HELP!

  • :D I use guvcviewer, I have now on my notebook Debian Squeeze Great video!

  • I record 1280x720 at 20 fps on my 3 year old laptop with my Logitech c910. The trick is to use MJPG both on Camera Output and Video Codec. By doing this, the computer does not have to do a live transcode of the clip during recording(which is a real hogg).

The drawback is that not all softwares like the MJPG stream, so I have to convert it into OGV and then into MPEG before working with it in kdenlive.

  • Great program! I can shoot in 1280 x 720 at around 14fps and it doesn't look all that bad.

  • how do you take a video with it and then watch it then upload it on youtube. I recorded then when i try to watch it, it says text document only. HELP

  • does this work with in-built webcams? i know you said usb devices but im using a inbuilt camera

  • @dvdragond2 Most of the built-in cameras are actually USB, and Linux uses the same interface (video4linux) for all cameras that are supported. You can check using "lsusb | grep Video", which will show any UVC device, or just try it.

  • @DaireDeDanann try zorin os

  • @MrPCOwner thanks it exactly what i wanted a Ubuntu based distro with gnome 2.X and a lot of useful additional apps .

  • The only thing I'd like is a link to the project's homepage.

  • thank u so much, it's an amazing great video!

  • KDE and Qt foreva! GTK is realy trash (if you programming)!

    Use Gentoo Lea princess!.

  • @MrPCOwner Basically I prefer the gnome 2.X desktop environment. Do you know more distros than Ubuntu based on it?

  • thank you for this. I ocouldnt get cheese to work. this worked perfectly. thank you so much. now i can get my channel up and going thanks.

  • fuck ubuntu it's the most mainstream/overused distributed version of linux. If you reall want functionality get X11, who needs a user interface anyway

  • I had problems with sound lining up. Changing the nice value helped a lot. I set it to -5

  • You said finally a good linux webcam recording program! Well Guvc Viewer has been out there for a while now. I did a video on it last year. and It is way better than cheese as far as video recording.

  • Hi Nixie

yesterday I have buyed a laptop (netbook dell inspiron mini 12)

and i really don’t know what Linux distribution

to install on it. Can you give me an advise about this?

PS: sorry for bad English, I’m French.

    Paer76

  • I was so hoping 2nd time you put book up to cam you'd flipped off the high def. I just hate it lips not move same as sound. lol, just 1 my peeves. I'm new w/ ubuntu and loving ur tutorials. Thanks you are awesome.

  • I imagine nxiepixel doing a review on the current state of Gentoo Linux n_n

  • is it free?

  • God your room needs a clean..

    lol

  • hd over usb 3.0?

  • 2:30

    Nixie pixelated...

  • thanks i used Cheese but it did not like my cam this works thanks

  • You should start doing Linux videos every week again.

  • nixie hello, this is the program you use to make videos for youtube?

  • Do you use any RPM distros? I love my OpenSuse, I use it as my network file server (Samba) with restricted user access, 3 TB of data (Raid 0) and auto backup to a 2 TB internal drive (Rsync). Between the raid and Gigabit Ethernet, I can stream HD movies SEXILLY!!!!

  • thanks nixie i instaled in mi linux mint debian and works fine

  • I dont even have linux on my machine but i cant stop watching her videos

  • Hi, in your future videos it would be great if you could try to make clear that GNU/Linux is not only about Ubuntu but also about Debian, RedHat, Slackware, Arch and so on and on and on and on...

  • Im trying GUVCview, but the audio is out of sync...

  • @MontsHellFire same here, it happens on every video...and cheese isn't able to record decent videos =/

  • I had x problems. Freezes a lot :( Nice review! My wife loves your show and so do I. Keep at it :D

  • This is my favorite style of review you've done...

  • I wonder if it would work better with kernel 2.6.38 with the group scheduler, or the .bashrc addition that does the same thing.. You should talk about that.

  • Nearly all the videos on my channel were made using 2 cheap webcams, Kdenlive, The Gimp, Audacity, NoteEdit and Lilypond, and 2 simultaneous instances of GUVCviewer, one at 640x480 and the other at 320x240. The webcams are low-res, but the open technologies are really powerful and stable and I'm pretty sure getting better webcams is not going to hurt the recording process at all, even though I'm only using a Dual-Core 1.6Hz with 2GB RAM.

  • That was an oldschool Nixie Video, just getting the facts right with a hot voice.

  • buen video, saludos linuxera :)

  • Translate, if you want...

jaja pues yo creo que solo veo los vídeos porque te ves muy interesante y simpática no por linux jejeje

  • @xgeriuz I will take the bait. He said, to translate in polite english, "I am not here for the linux." ;)

  • It's not OOmbuintu - it's UBUM2.

Cannadians can't spel or pronounce nuffing propper.

  • @callmeshane303 Coming from a person who lives in the country where that word originates its actually pronounced ooboontoo ... I have heard people say stuff like yoobuntoo, yubuntoo and so many many variations. Those U's in the word are pronounced like you would "oo".

  • @gmccumskey

    No it's not.

  • @callmeshane303 Per the Ubuntu website, which would obviously be the correct site to check for this information, the proper pronunciation is: "oo-BOON-too"

  • @bilekbp

    It's UBUM2 - Nelson Mandella said so.

  • @callmeshane303 Nelson Mandella may say whatever he wishes, but if the developers of Ubuntu wish it to be pronounced "oo-BOON-too," then that is how it is pronounced, no matter what respected leader says about a word that may, or may not, even be the same one.

  • @bilekbp

It's UBUM2 - Are you a bit stupid or something?

  • @callmeshane303 But they can cook a great moosehead soup. Can you? But seriously, the fact that I'm an American makes me appreciate our northern brothers & sisters. They really are cool and unhindered fun people. I've spent many a month up yonder - never had a better time. Their differences are subtle yet great. You should wander up there sometime. They also seem to get hash up there.

  • Thanks.

I first heard about KDEnlive from you and this is what I use for my videos is great but I still need to learn the software better.

The webacams I think are only good for live streaming, for recording is better to have a dedicated camera.

USB2 should be more than enough for HD video even uncompressed but I do not know any good webacam that can do that.

  • I was able to record 720p with GUVCViewer, but I had to record it as YUV, which creates 30MB/s uncompressed video, but no lag. It seems to boil down to the usual time-memory tradeoff, not the bandwidth of USB 2.0.

  • Thanks for the review, but did you actually mean guvcview? (no -er)

    guvcview.berlios.de

  • I can see mullets :-)

  • the name expanded

    GUVCViewer =

    GTK UVC Viewer =

GIMP Toolkit USB video class Viewer =

GNU Image Manipulation Program Toolkit Universal Serial Bus video class Viewer=

GNU's Not Unix Image Manipulation Program Toolkit Universal Serial Bus video class Viewer

  • Pretty like a picture! :-P

  • why are the suggestion videos japanese writing?

  • that's an x52 !!! isn't it? cool stuff !

  • 1:57 "if you're recording in pitch blackness you will not get the frames per second you want"

that is soo wrong it eats children for breakfast :P

  • I've used cheese to record, seems to do so just fine, and I would then edit later on.. but I often find the audio is off by a tad.. any ideas why?

  • Very nice! You should consider teaching Linux remotely (LogMeIn, or ?).

  • Very nice! You should consider teaching Linux remotely (LogMeIn, or ?).

  • thanks ive been using this for awhile

  • Thank you SO MUCH for this review! Now if only Webcam Studio could take a cue from this and produce similar frame rates with less delays. (sigh) One can only hope. I do so hate being reliant on windoze.

  • Great they gave it a simple name too ! NOT !

  • Great review! Also, I like your new intro!

  • Sweet video. You should do one comparing different Linux video editors.

  • @eduardoc Well, so far I've used KDEnlive, OpenShot and Cinelerra. Think I should do a 1 vs. 1 vs. 1 review? =)

  • @nixiedoeslinux yeah!! it would be cool!! i remember pretty well of your revision about kdelive, and that was great!! althought i am using only open shot (cause my needs are really shorty) kdelive is the most powerful, yet simple, video editor that we have on linux (and this observation is based only on that tutorial of yours =)... that said, i was unaware about guvcviewer... thank you!! nice hair, by the way... hehehehehe... take care!!

  • @nixiedoeslinux Don't forget Blender, you can do video editing in the Node Editor, as well in the video sequence editor, but you have more power in the node editor. I personally like Cinelerra the best.

  • @nixiedoeslinux Hello Miss Pixel .. Its been a while since we've seen anything Linux. Would you consider doing a video where you build your own computer ?

  • This was pretty cool. Question: do you think the firewire interface can do the HD at the higher framerate? It's supposed to be able to handle sustained bit transfer better, if I recall correctly, but the choice of cameras becomes alot smaller.

  • Loved it

  • Nice X-52 Flight System in the background! :)

  • @scmustang23 Whoa, is she a flight-simmer?? :))

  • @antred11 I don't know. The X-52 might just mean that she is! @nixiedoeslinux Are you a flight simmer? (If so, maybe a video with some information on your flight sim interest?)

  • So the G stands for GTK, GTK stands for GIMP Tool Kit, whereas GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulating Program, whereas GNU stands for GNU's Not Unix and so on...

  • @0902Andreas ...and UVC stands for USB Video Class, and USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. So, I guess the fully-expanded name of this software would be: "GNU's Not Unix Image Manipulation Program Toolkit Universal Serial Bus Video Class viewer". I wonder why they use an acronym...

  • @0902Andreas I made a flowchart explaining this because I apparently have nothing better to do. bit (dot) ly/rnToY6

  • Thanks for another good one Nixie. Good to see you bringing another good linux vid to YT. Keep 'em coming!

  • you play dragon age = )

  • I love you to Nixie ;) Great review

  • What repository did you get this from?

  • Don't buy flip cameras. There are much better cameras on the market within the same price range.

  • Excelente ¡¡¡

  • it would cool if Nixie could tell us what types of hardware she prefers

and to watch her build a computer any takers ?

  • love the Sinful shirt. i have the same one but in green and its the dood version.anyways the remember that a lot of onboard camera's and high end camera;s out there have the frame rate on the camera and will really screw it up if you have the program set to one FPS and the other and some other. i know because my camera is no implanted in my drywall. most programs will let know know and also if you have different aspect ratios or pixelation might screw it up a little also. but i like the program

  • That's what I was talking about!

  • Cheese is a program a snack but it's also something else:)

  • GUVCViewer lol, say that 10 times fast ... actually that wasn't as hard as I thought it would be ^_^

  • did you try webcam studio??

  • love me!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • thanks great information

  • sinful ^_^

  • The version in Synaptic is not the latest, you can get the latest version 1.4.4 by using the Google.

  • What webcam do you use? I have the Microsoft Lifecam HD 5001.

  • hey great review now i was wondering what this does for built in webcams or would have to go buy a webcam for my laptop

  • #!/bin/sh

    ffmpeg -f video4linux2 -s vga -r 25 -i /dev/video0 -f alsa -ac 2 -i hw:0 -acodec pcm_u8 -vcodec h263p $1

    lossless record a/v from webcam

  • @omfg4all sorry THIS is the lossless one, the other one is lossy D:, this one records the desktop totally lossless, beware it uses a lot of disk, i use it for quick things and re-compress it later.

    #!/bin/sh

    ffmpeg -f x11grab -s wxga -r 25 -i :0.0 -f alsa -ac 2 -i hw:0,0 -acodec pcm_u8 -vcodec huffyuv $1

  • Thanks Nixie for sharing this program, just nice... (l) ;)

  • 640x360 isn't that bad really.

  • What kind of Logitech cam are you using?

  • Have you tried WS4GL aka WebcamStudio for Gnu/Linux? It's pretty good and is great for things like BlogTV/Stickam/etc.

  • Laugh out loud when you said "how's it hanging guys?" xD

  • I would like to know howto stream live on livestream och ustream, or maybe there's something similar compatible with linux.

  • nixie, im just wondering what are your PC specs ?

  • I'll try it and is pretty awesome! thanks for share it :D . Bye bye Cheese :P

  • Saweeet!

Great video, great advice from someone who's opinion is valid!

  • hehe cheese joke :D

  • do you use dlink cameras? i though i noticed a dlink icon on your desktop.

  • i have always used guvc viewer over all the others. i found it works lots smoother than cheese. cheese freezes with My uvc webcam but the uvc viewer works perfectly with it. always has.

  • <3

  • @Quirkification no like seriously, this was the hottest review ever. SO genuine, SO linux, SO NIXIE!!!

  • @Quirkification are you just pretending to be such a retard?

  • Acronyms mean something?

OMG, U NO EVERYTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS

  • I messed with my webcam on a celeron and I got 300fps with mplayer at 640x480 and the frame rate looked so fluid and natural.

  • 1:15 - You never mentioned you were Canadian!

  • @carlwh123 OMG she is Canadian....which makes her even HOTTER!!

  • @carlwh123 lol i hope she is

  • @carlwh123 You caught that too, eay?

  • @ZeroFossilFuel lol yep and for record I love Canadians, I was just joking people!

  • @carlwh123 She´s from Iowa, You bad disciple!

  • @carlwh123 She´s from Iowa, you´re a bad disciple! :-/

  • @carlwh123 Well you know that explains why she is perfect ;)

  • I'll try. I hope, she is right about it :/

  • Great review - I'm gunna install that now, thanks from the UK. Have a nice day :)

  • I am sorry if you here this all the time, but dammit, your one in a million. We need to make babies, they will rule the world.

  • compiling... (gentoo on a netbook :P)
