Brilliant video, looks like it belongs in the air. Wonder if it would actually fly? I only remember the series from when I was a very young, did the undercarriage wheels ever feature, or are they your own design?
In reality, how would the front window hold up to the pressure of going from Air to Water? Wouldn't the pressure from impact just shatter it? In Theory?
This is fantastic, I love it. I use to watch Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea when I was in elementary school. I always loved the Flying Sub. Great job animating it.
It uses the same system that the V2 rockets did- that is, small vanes are in the exhaust of the jets/propellers that by turning them, turns the whole unit.
FS 1 has the same problem that all multipurpose vehicles have- they can do it all, but not very well at doing just one thing.
The FS 1 in a dogfight would be swatted from the sky like a fly being hit by a brick
on my planet it is possible to dive into the water at flight velocity. The craft would require advanced boundary layer combustion with pulse linear detonation drive and cold fusion reactor. Oh wait this is earth 2008....fuhgettaboutit.... my bad ..obi fong kenobi.
Not a bad design. But having the landing gear door panels under the wheel struts, would never do. And the rear wheel would block to read exit when retracted. This craft was never intended for dry land. So there isn't enough space inside for the gear and such. But detachable takeoff cradle could allow dry land departures. But not landings.
In an Irwin Allen TV series, you don't expect things to be remotely practical, realistic, or plausible -- you just put your brain in neutral and enjoy it.
I mean, it's a flying submarine, for Christ's sake!
Its a SUCTION-aircraft. Notice the vents on the top-hatch-recess. The brilliance of Admiral Nelson's design. The device has two atomic-engines for air or watr turbothrust, and evacuates air from the top, adding to performance and lift, like the stingrays that prowl the sea, occasionally breaking the surface and flying for a short bit. Control is from vectoring the trhust of the two turbothrusters. Irwin Allen rules! Thanks Irwin, wherever you are.
Could the splashdown with the FS-1 be actually possible without damage to the fuselage? I mean, could a wave-cutting device open up the water to lessen the impact on the sub fom a high altitude? What would power the device? Ultrasonics? Turbos? Thrust? Thoughts...
Yes, perhaps crash splash is possible but unecessary. Beefing up the structure would make FS1 very heavy. Additionally, even if the craft survived a sharp angle water entry, the very high G-force from impact with the water would actually kill the crew! The show actually got it wrong. If FS1 was real, it would land like any sea plane would, gently as shown in the youtube video, then simply operate like regular sub after having reached a much slower speed.
Holy crap! That is amazing guys. Irwin, L.B. Abbott and the bunch would be way proud of this, nice job! The sense of speed and climbing really made me feel like I was there somewhat. Thanks for the post!
THIS IS TERRIFIC!! I LOVED THE FLYING SUB..AND THE P1 IN MARINE BOY

Im pretty sure it would skip off the water when landing.

So, I'm wondering, how is this NOT a possible real-world vehicle? The design seems sound enough.
