  • THIS IS TERRIFIC!! I LOVED THE FLYING SUB..AND THE P1 IN MARINE BOY

  • I had the model when I was a kid. Probably my favorite model.

  • Wouldn't the door get really hot?

  • Fantastic....

  • Fantastic, I love this

  • @BillWa

Thank you all...this is the number one FS item on you tube....might have to make another one.

  • iNCREDIBLE!......Simply incredible effects, great work people, Have you ever been recruited by DARPA?

  • Brilliant video, looks like it belongs in the air. Wonder if it would actually fly? I only remember the series from when I was a very young, did the undercarriage wheels ever feature, or are they your own design?

  • MAGNIFICENT!!!

  • In reality, how would the front window hold up to the pressure of going from Air to Water? Wouldn't the pressure from impact just shatter it? In Theory?

  • I remember in the opening credits, it said 'The year is 1973... there will be flying subs". 1973!

  • That was great work! The FS-1 like I'd never seen it.

  • Im pretty sure it would skip off the water when landing.

  • So, I'm wondering, how is this NOT a possible real-world vehicle? The design seems sound enough.

  • In reality It would take a lot to get something like this into the air.

  • Too cool...

  • How did you do this (progam or game?)

  • Very cool!! I loved that show but I always covered my eyes when the scary monsters appeared or someone hit Capt. Crane. I just loved Capt. Crane.

  • it doesnt even go underwater

  • I had a model of the flying sub when I was a kid. One of the most awesome props ever.

  • Wow

  • Very good

  • Very good

  • lot of fun to see one of my childhood TV ships brought to life. Still looks cool

  • This is fantastic, I love it. I use to watch Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea when I was in elementary school. I always loved the Flying Sub. Great job animating it.

  • Very cool

  • When in flight, the sub looks like an angry potato chip. Ya gotta love it for that, if nothing else!

(I'm having trouble posting, don't know why)

  • how does it generate lift?

  • Damn sweet!

  • a bryant tillman pick...too cool

  • Iv'e LOVED the Flying Sub all my life, since 1965. I'm building the MOEBIUS SEAVIEW and FLYING SUB right now!!!

  • do you have video of the one in the TV series? If they do bring this back as a movie or series I hope they keep the Flying Sub.

  • I love those engines firing up. So cool.

Excellent shots of the ship in flight.

  • you may not remember this- but when I was a kid and they'd fire up FS 1 she was atomic powered and the interior shots were pretty cool

  • Soo cool! I love those engines

  • No control surfaces on it at all. How'd it turn, dive?

  • It uses the same system that the V2 rockets did- that is, small vanes are in the exhaust of the jets/propellers that by turning them, turns the whole unit.

FS 1 has the same problem that all multipurpose vehicles have- they can do it all, but not very well at doing just one thing.

The FS 1 in a dogfight would be swatted from the sky like a fly being hit by a brick

  • Do you have any footage from the TV series? The flying sub was my favorite especially when it takes off after surfacing from underwater.

  • I don't care how old the show is...the flying sub is tops.

  • Great simulation, we see it better than on the show. Next simulation make it rendez-vous with the main sub. Cool

  • with that big fan ontop you'd think it would just go straight up !

  • This is a pretty cool vision of the future =)

  • yeah...can ya believe they thought of it over 40 years ago? ;)

  • reminds me slighlty of that pupett series go something they too always took for ever to power up( LOL)

  • on my planet it is possible to dive into the water at flight velocity. The craft would require advanced boundary layer combustion with pulse linear detonation drive and cold fusion reactor. Oh wait this is earth 2008....fuhgettaboutit.... my bad ..obi fong kenobi.

  • man i would love to fly that thing...but if you crashed it i bet they would sit you down for awhile a long time. a long long time.damn cough.....

  • I'd hate to be the Test pilot for this thing. hitting water even at 35mph is sure to cause some major injuries.

  • Fantastic graphics, the FS-1 has never looked better! If only Irwin had been able to use animation like that!!

  • That is just too cool! Thanks for bring some great childhood memories back to life.

  • Incredible Video!!! Great Computer Graphics!!

I'm a big fan of the Flying Sub since seeing the show as a kid. I love what the new technology can bring to the Flying Sub. Bravo!!

  • How wonderful. Thanks for creating this and sharing. Looking forward to seeing more.

  • What is the name of that program?

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • Belo video ! Porém como ele muda de direção e altitude sem flaps e sem leme ??? Acho tb que para alçar voo precisaria ter mais asa...

  • Just seeing the engines ignite just like the real thing is enough for me!

I made a Flying Sub for Virtual Sailor a few years back, but yours is the absolute ultimate!

    Bravo, Sir!

  • Not a bad design. But having the landing gear door panels under the wheel struts, would never do. And the rear wheel would block to read exit when retracted. This craft was never intended for dry land. So there isn't enough space inside for the gear and such. But detachable takeoff cradle could allow dry land departures. But not landings.

  • Who cares! Its a 60's Sci Fi TV Show you twit!

  • In an Irwin Allen TV series, you don't expect things to be remotely practical, realistic, or plausible -- you just put your brain in neutral and enjoy it.

    I mean, it's a flying submarine, for Christ's sake!

  • i think this is extra content on flight simulator

  • Fantastic looking Flying Sub. You even got the hastily designed but never used landing gear right!

  • where do u get this aircraft???

  • Its a SUCTION-aircraft. Notice the vents on the top-hatch-recess. The brilliance of Admiral Nelson's design. The device has two atomic-engines for air or watr turbothrust, and evacuates air from the top, adding to performance and lift, like the stingrays that prowl the sea, occasionally breaking the surface and flying for a short bit. Control is from vectoring the trhust of the two turbothrusters. Irwin Allen rules! Thanks Irwin, wherever you are.

  • how would such a thing actually be able to fly ? would it be assumed to be like a stealth jet given that we can see no obvious control surfaces ?

    fantastic job !

  • SOOOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL !!

  • ...Irwin Allen must be smiling down from heaven!...This video rules!

  • Freakin' awsome!

  • Damned fine work! Man, this really makes me want to have a Voyage PS3 or Xbox game. You'd be the guys to go to!

  • I didn't know it had billet wheels!

  • with a fleet of these ,who needs the Seaview?

  • Nice!

  • Could the splashdown with the FS-1 be actually possible without damage to the fuselage? I mean, could a wave-cutting device open up the water to lessen the impact on the sub fom a high altitude? What would power the device? Ultrasonics? Turbos? Thrust? Thoughts...

  • Yes, perhaps crash splash is possible but unecessary. Beefing up the structure would make FS1 very heavy. Additionally, even if the craft survived a sharp angle water entry, the very high G-force from impact with the water would actually kill the crew! The show actually got it wrong. If FS1 was real, it would land like any sea plane would, gently as shown in the youtube video, then simply operate like regular sub after having reached a much slower speed.

  • Thanks for posting!

  • The Flying Sub. One of the COOLEST designs EVER! Love that Irwin Allen stuff.

  • "Unbelievable" Truly the best I've ever seen.

  • Holy crap! That is amazing guys. Irwin, L.B. Abbott and the bunch would be way proud of this, nice job! The sense of speed and climbing really made me feel like I was there somewhat. Thanks for the post!

  • FYI Howard Lydecker of the famous Lydecker brothers worked on the the FS sequences with LB.And yes I think he would have been blown away!!

  • Took hours just to get those first 5 seconds LOL.

    Someday, Chris, maybe....

  • it'd be nice to see this dock with the Seaview
