The only thing I will say is I couldn't imagine trying to cover Paula Cole she's like a musician talent-wise from another world, a genius with one of the purest, most mesmerizing voices ever. While it is a painful song, it's also quite a bit about self-empowerment. Have you ever seen Paula Cole's music video for this? It's quite colorful and happy, and cheerful for the most part. There is the realization that it's her that's responsible for faults. At the same time, there's hints at the realization that she's also responsible for overcoming them.
yes i've seen it and agree that the MTV is trying to convey the happier side of her song. but these are just individual perceptions. one could hold an endless debate to analysing an MTV that's supposed to have commercial value. too fabricated. watching paula's live performance would actually strip of the sugar-coated facade and bring you a step closer to how paula relates to this song.
I must say, I wouldn't pin Paula Cole as the kind of artist that would change the whole emotion of her song in a music video in order to sell records. If you really think that she would do that, I don't know why you appreciate her as an artist enough to bash Katharine for her cover of Paula's song.

I like Katharine Mcphee. Funny as it may sound, I hated her on American Idol though. I thought she was too plain, and she lacked emotion when she sang on the show. She seemed to develop quite a bit afterwards. I felt the same way about Carrie Underwood too. She made a huge transformation after the show and turned into an amazing singer.
Um...She doesn't sing it happily. She smiles in parts, but it's appropriate. However, for the rest of the song, she is quite mournful. If you listen to the lyrics, "Me" at different parts of the song is a negative thing, and sometimes it is more positive, showing a change in mood towards the end of song. I haven't watched Paula's much, but I don't see why it would be a problem for Kat to have a different interpretation of the song?
I don't think the argument is really about"did she sing it happy,did sing it sad"...ok she sang it sad that is great. But I think that...it didn't have the same pulling drive..sadness, weeping in her voice that I heard as a yougn woman when I heard the origional. What a sh*tty, amateur jazz bar arrangement. Totally lackluster, infinitely boring, and completely crushes the warmth and spirit of a great song.
Pretty sad when the first and most important line of the song is "I am not the person who is singing".

wow what a voice this sister has. i just wished the arrangement esp, in the verses were different... soulful ok but not the light soulful walk in the park vibe that i get from the arrangement in the verses. but wow what a talent and i wish to hear her sing this song again but different arrangement.

I think Paula Cole sang the song with all heart, and sort of express her personal story with the song.
Katharine did a great job on making a beautiful rendition of the song. And the only difference is KAtharine felt the song differently so she sang it her own way

Wow, the meaning of this song is tragically removed by this arrangement and her phrasing and lack of commitment to the lyrics. Positive: she does have a gorgeous voice.

I don't really like this cover actually....I think PARTICULARLY with this song....when listening to the origional and personal writing of the artist...there is something that Paula Cole conveyed in her song that,SEEMED very personal to me....seemed like something someone else couldn't interpret or cover. And as far as vocals are concerned...come on...Paula Cole's origional is better to me.

Blergh...what a boring cover of this song. There's no denying that Katharine McPhee has a great voice, but she completely murdered the soul of this song.

You know what...I AGREE...particularly because when you write AND sing a soulful revealing song like this, it usualy comes FRO the person that wrote it origionally. And BECAUSE of that the song seemed personally tailored to Paula Cole's voice...not so uch Katherines.

I can't believe Katherine would actually sing this painful song happily? Like WTF? I don't approve of this at all. Not everything can be sung in a happy-bimbo tune okay? No matter how good your vocal chords are. WHERE IS THE RESPECT?!? URGH!! If you love this song so much go make your own original. Don't cover Paula's.

While it is a painful song, it's also quite a bit about self-empowerment. Have you ever seen Paula Cole's music video for this? It's quite colorful and happy, and cheerful for the most part. There is the realization that it's her that's responsible for faults. At the same time, there's hints at the realization that she's also responsible for overcoming them.

yes i've seen it and agree that the MTV is trying to convey the happier side of her song. but these are just individual perceptions. one could hold an endless debate to analysing an MTV that's supposed to have commercial value. too fabricated. watching paula's live performance would actually strip of the sugar-coated facade and bring you a step closer to how paula relates to this song.

I must say, I wouldn't pin Paula Cole as the kind of artist that would change the whole emotion of her song in a music video in order to sell records. If you really think that she would do that, I don't know why you appreciate her as an artist enough to bash Katharine for her cover of Paula's song.

I like Katharine Mcphee. Funny as it may sound, I hated her on American Idol though. I thought she was too plain, and she lacked emotion when she sang on the show. She seemed to develop quite a bit afterwards. I felt the same way about Carrie Underwood too. She made a huge transformation after the show and turned into an amazing singer.

Um...She doesn't sing it happily. She smiles in parts, but it's appropriate. However, for the rest of the song, she is quite mournful. If you listen to the lyrics, "Me" at different parts of the song is a negative thing, and sometimes it is more positive, showing a change in mood towards the end of song. I haven't watched Paula's much, but I don't see why it would be a problem for Kat to have a different interpretation of the song?

I don't think the argument is really about"did she sing it happy,did sing it sad"...ok she sang it sad that is great. But I think that...it didn't have the same pulling drive..sadness, weeping in her voice that I heard as a yougn woman when I heard the origional. I also HATE HATE HATE uneccessary runs in a song...there ARE some that do't actually \ADD to it...and HAD she taken some of those out? I would have LOVED this cover more.

I love how she sounds so confident and her voice sounds so clear. This is defantely the type of music she should sing. I love how she plays with her voice with the riffs and runs. She really shines here. I love it I'm addicted to this
