Good song . Has anyone got Bonnie Blue Flag in the same movie when the Union troops are hiding in the woods and the Confederate troops go marching by ? And if you have could you post it please . Thanks .
I know it's being picky, but they mention Andersonville prison several times in this movie after establishing it was 1863 when Andersonville hadn't even been constructed yet.
@Lieblingsfachful thats correct it was 1864 that Andersonville was as it were built. The scene with the Military school was entirely made up.The particular academy was in actuality closed during the Civil War years. However I do like those tester stripes.
There is indeed much to know however the more I read the nearer this picture came to the actual events as they are said to have occurred. That is an excellent surprise.
I believe it is in color, well told, well acted, well sung, handsome in its appearance and to be certain good sound.I think well of this motion picture however it is most certainly and simply put a motion picture. The place of Althea Gibson and Constance Towers made certain that this would be an attractive offer.John Wayne,William Holden and then some make this work very well and it is worth saying that this is worth seeing. One of the better pictures of Director Ford .
@mtnmanquin I was not under any belief that the story line had any legitmate connection to actual events that occurred during the Civil War.I did look for a time a time ago however I was as stated not under any particular impression that this story was anything but a story.
@Uncle65788 The movie was based loosely on an actual military operation led by Col Benjamin Grierson. He left La Grange, Tenn., with 3 cavalry regiments, 1700 men, on April 17th 1863. In 17 days they covered 800 miles, engaging Confederate troops several times, disabling two railroads. The Battle of Newton's Station, Miss. occurred on April 24th 1863. He continued on south, causing general chaos with confederate supply lines to Vicksburg, ending up in Baton Rouge, La. on May 2nd.
@cannonrogmatt.....STOP!....STOP right now with the misinformation which I find despicable on your part. Yes, there was a stuntman killed on THE HORSE SOLDIERS and his name was Fred Kennedy and he was a friend of the great John Ford. However, when the fall or accident happen Fred was doing a horse fall for William Holden( Major Kendall)......and THAT scene was NOT used in the final version.
Notice the yankee uniforms were the uniforms worn by the 1870' and 1880's cavalry. These were not the uniforms worn in the 1860's. Also one of the stunt men was killed when his horse fell. The scene remained in the final version
0:55...every First Sergeant's nightmare. "The accordian effect; a column bunching up and stretching out. Bad enough in the modern military with vehicle convoys. It must have been really tough in the Cavalry with mounts that thought for themselves!
ALL parts work to perfection in this wonderful John Ford movie. The actors, both main-leads & key-supports, have virtually all worked together before on many previous Ford films; thus they know each other well, & accordingly they interact together well; the story-line is v. entertaining; the cinematography is brilliant .. esp. this powerful opening, with silouette used superbly against the long line of horse-soldiers trudging along the railroad tracks; & the opening theme is stirring. 5* post !!
This movie is based on Col. Benjamin Grierson's raid, one of the most daring raids of the Civil War, summer of 1863. Later Grierson commanded the 10th Cavalry, the Buffalo Soldiers.
"I left my love" written and composed by Stan Jones. Does a good job of souinding like songs of teh Civil War period, justlike Jimmy Driftwood's "The Battle of New Orleans" does for its time
As a 10 year old kid in Illinois, I watched Moseby's Rangers whip the Yankees and wondered how the North ever won. Then the fanfare of this song started telling me.
One of the Confederate generals said after that war that he thought that the Yankees had the best music (though this was made for a movie about 100 years later).
One of the great westerns. John Ford said he would never tackle the Civil War because it was too complex but he did a great job, southern stupidity & bravado, yankee efficiency, black pride.
The movie ends badly..too quickly as one of John Fords best stunt men (Fred Kennedy) also featured as one of Hannah Hunters "guards" was killed during a stunt.
Ford wrapped the movie early, hence the "quick" ending.
Hey TigerT, I saw the movie when it first came out, I was about 11-years-old and the song 'I Left My Love' by the great Stan Jones has always been a favorite of mine.
thank you very much for your nice words. i allways love movies with John Marion. I wish you and your family all the best luck in the world and a wonderful year 2009. The Greirson raid was in 1863 so why all the mentions of Andersonville prison which did not come into being until 1864
ukpete44 1 year ago
I am glad I am not the only one who noticed that error. I am surprised that the script supervisor did not bring that to Mr. Ford's attention.
