Roy Clark is my mentor, one of the reasons I started playing a guitar 40 years ago and still my favorite country shredder..!! He is probably the most underrated guitar player but he truely is a master..
I'll second that comment from Hellbilly... I think he was overlooked partially due his huge sho-biz success, and that he was just so damn funny. But the pickin' is for real... God Bless you Roy, where ever you are.
Now he is going to RFD TV theater this fall, I want to go so badly, but it is so far away, and it might cost a bunch!! It is so near my birthday, but no.
This is one of the first pieces I learned on guitar, though not nearly as difficult an arrangement as Roy uses. That he actually plays it on a twelve-string is all the more impressive.
Also, you can't really see it at this resolution, but he actually breaks a string right at the end. Now that's intensity.
Jason89: I'm not certain when this was performed but my dad taped it somewhere between 1992 and 1995. I think it was on Austin City Limits, but it may have originally been taped earlier.
He is a true virtuoso not only of all the instruments he plays but also of many musical styles.Imagine him and Yngvie together on stage dueling styles!Roy rules!
There is no one that compares to Roy. Watch all the videos you can of him playing guitar, banjo, anything--it will lay you out. He is the master of all things stringed.
Apples and oranges. How many instruments does Paco De Lucia play? If you have seen them both live recently, Paco De Lucia at 61 seems to have lost quite a bit while Roy Clark at 75 is still playing everything from piano, violin, banjo, several different types of guitars, with the same energy as he did at 30. Spanish guitar, Paco De Lucia may have the edge, but Roy Clark has a more diverse skill and is a much better showman.
one of the GREAT MASTERS of the guitar.....jazz...bebop...blues...classical...country....ROY CLARK IS AN OLD SCHOOL MASTER...one of the MOST underrated TALENTS in MUSIC.......A TRUE MASTER....FIVE STARS****
@HellbillyRon I couldn't agree more....people (who don't know) think of Roy as "the guy from Hee Haw", when in reality he is a TRUE virtuoso. My grandfather was a great guitar player (and even greater man), and if grandpa looked up so someone, you knew they were truly a giant. Roy is a giant.
When I saw Roy play this song in a club a few times in the 80's, it was unbelievable as his talent/sound would just echo in one's mind. Truly worthy of greatness.
The guy is good, no denying that, but the local wise-guy (who will put down anything anyone owns, unless he owns it too) claimed that this guy was a million times better than Jake Shimabukuro. Riiiiight....
My dad used to work at this show. Roy would sometimes crack the top of the guitar during the low string hand slap part. He is a master! Truly a pioneer and legend!
For those of you who may not know, Glen Campbell is also a marvelous guitar player; both Sinatra and Elvis said he was the best guitar player they ever worked with.
WAY BACK when Glen did an album "The Astounding 12 String Guitar. Roy did the banjo work on it. To this day, it is one of my favorite albums.
Everyone's right about this one - he had fiddle players and a brass section for all those hundreds and hundreds of shows he did back in the day in Branson.
All that with a FLATPICK!
