I feel bad for the American soldiers because soldiers don't make the choice to go to war, the politicians do. However, Even as bad as the American soldiers got it, the Iraqi civilians have it 10x worse under occupation. However, as long as America is leaving that's important, they only accomplished one goal, which was killing Saddam, but they could not complete their other goals, installing a puppet government as well as a continued military presence in Iraq

It's what we all think to some extent, and to an extent he's right. Those that don't try to achieve something get stuck with dangerous, crappy, duties that nobody trully wants. Others joined willingly because they want to make a difference. If you really think about it, if you chose the military knowing you would go to Iraq you're not in the sense stuck there, if the military was your only option because you didn't make an effort to control your life then you are.
