Because the assumption of rectangular shape is residence area, the border line of rectangle should be roads. But in the photo of Mars, I don't see any noticeable thickness in the board, which means, it's the rectangle is probably not the border of residence block. I highly guess that's just aliasing effect of photo pixels.

Finnlander, why don't you download the images for yourself from ESA. I have downloaded 2 images of the hale crater, one west , the other from south viewing and checked the images myself. The strange outlines in the crater are repeatable in both images indicating that it is NOT jpg compression or some other noise artifact in the camera or transmission of the image. If you use photoshop you can repeat what everybody else is doing farily easily.

I've seen this kind of patterning in many photos of both Mars and the Moon. I think this is a form of pixelation caused by the camera not having enough colours to choose from.

I was excited when I first saw this. I checked it out and discussed it with some artist friends. I looked further and found similar patters elsewhere. Sadly this is indeed a form of pixelation.

They are in fact JPEG compression artifacts. The HRSC definitely uses JPEG compression on the photometric data prior to sending it back to earth. The reason why the patterns are aligned with the topology of the surface and are the same from different perspectives is that the perspective views are actually computer genererated images using a 3D model of surface (derived from the HRSC's stereo data) with 2D images of the surface (bearing the artifacts) projected onto them.

You just need to know that the compression the camera uses creates such artifacts and that the 3D-views are not actually "photos" but 3D renderings.The artifacts could even have been amplified by the lighting calculations used when creating the 3D image, or by other steps of image processing like extracting the natural colour of the landscape from the photometric data (which contains much more colour information than visible by humans - far into infrared and ultraviolet)

Yes you are absolutely right. I checked each camera colour R,G,B and there are no patterns in one colour band and different patterns in each of the remaining colour bands indicating that it is a JPG compression effect. And you are also correct in that the rotation of the effects is due to the 3D image processing. The rotation of the artifacts is what gives the illusion that it is an ancient city.

The image of the crater is synthetic virtual scene of Mars. It was produced by draping a satellite image of Mars on top of 3D topography, the blocky appearance is caused by Jpeg compression artifacts in the low quality draped image.

Take an Jpeg image, use a photo viewing program, save the image at a quality setting of only 5 to 10, you will see the same blocky effect.

Mars wasn't suitable for life for several hundred million years, maybe even a billion years. I doubt we would see such clear remains on the surface after such long periods of time. It is clear the pics have been heavily edited (color and zoom) to show those "rectangular patterns", which may very well be compression artifacts as previously stated. Take a picture of any other irregular surface with similar resolution and apply the same editing procedures. You will most likely get the same result.
