  • Great song!

  • i hope the 6 ppl that dislike this gets aids and dies!!!

  • I had no idea this was a cover until recently and as much as I love APC the original is fucking epic ♥

  • to everybody disrespecting this band with those "maynard is better. maynard's cover beats this. i want to gargle maynard's man juice." type comments think about this: while you're disrespecting this band, your god obviously has respect for them otherwise he wouldn't have covered one of their fucking songs. so get off his dick for 4 minutes and 27 seconds and enjoy this awesome original.

    sincerely,

    a huge Tool/APC/Puscifer fan

  • If you are a homo and love Maynard so much to were all you can say to every fucking song is, "Oh my Maynard sings this song better or My Maynard is a god", then go tell your parents you love them then walk into your room, which is probably still your parents house and blow your brains out you fags.

  • Maynard does it WAY better!

  • Comment removed

  • @rodrigoquiroz matter of opinion but i enjoy both in equal measure

  • @rodrigoquiroz too bad Maynard is just a singer so he doesnt do shit better besides sing.

  • Comment removed

  • @Kurtney4594 Actually, Maynard plays guitar, bass, keyboards and he's a composer.

  • Cool ,thanks

  • ive never heard a song that can create an image of a junkie whos lost his mind and is in treatment talking bout falling in love with a nurse giving him pills fucking magic

  • I've grown my hair through Pakistan to do this song justice

  • @murtazax hey I'm a Muslim rock fan too!Rock on brotha

  • interesting, the chords don't really fit the voice in this version...

  • @sicchild I realized that too...but it's okay

  • I prefer APC's version. Maynard is a way better singer, plus I like the sound of it in general

  • I have searched for years for this song. How have I lived without hearing this band before? There is now one more ray of light from music in my life due to this song.

  • @acidclarkie i recall seeing a copy of fantastic planet in the record and tape exchange in Notting hill not that that helps or anything...

    XD

  • A horribly underrated band of the 90's. FANTASTIC PLANET is a fantastic album. These guys should have been much, much bigger. Such a shame.

  • great band, great song

  • Say hello, now that you discovered Failure.

  • Original is nice, but still prefer APC version, its more accord to lyrics, that sick "lullabyish" dark nightmare tune is just unbeatable

  • @Negleglumenglemur Yes I agree that the APC version has what you mentioned, however Failure's original does have it own unique chaotic quality. The chaos that comes with being a drug addict is prevalent and perfectly captured.

  • i pressed the like button now where is the "fucking love this to death" button

    ???

  • I still love the APC version, but the original kicks it in the balls so hard that it can't have children.

  • one of my coworkers introduced me to this band last winter and ever since then, i've been dazed and amazed by their work. even in blue-collar Iowa, Failure is worshipped and revered. as a 23 year-old, i'm trying to understand what it would feel like to listen to this when i was in 2nd grade--the year this album was released. absolutely genius.

  • great band. modern bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Autolux, and A Perfect Circle. have members from this band.

  • It's weird that Troy Van Leeuwen was the touring guitarist for Failure during this album and later joined APC but left before they did this song.

  • @ExclaimedMusic Troy Van Leeuwen had never even heard of "Failure" when this song was recorded. He was just an after-thought.

  • Yeah APC's cover brought the unawakened and uneducated to the brilliance of Failure and maintained the proper requirement of not being better than the original. So it fulfilled its need. Now you should go search for Ken and Maynard singing and playing this song together live and return down the rabbit hole.

  • This is really, really cool!!

  • I always thought this was an APC song, ,,I need to educate my self about this band now

  • this needs WAAAAAAAAY more views...

  • @Darko2862412 jajaja, youre absolutely right.

  • i hada dream about this song n i was getting married n this was my wedding song i didnt kno the lyrics til today:) i didnt realize this was a song about a girl he wanted to marry im gona use this as my wedding song if i ever get married :)) its perfect

  • @acidclarkie Right On Bro !

  • @pbkic46 You got that right ... Awesome Jam !

  • listen thism usic alone and high u wil love it.

  • No one even compares to Failure

  • this is one of the most underrated albums in the 90's. 90's were awesome, so many different types of music

  • Maynard does it better. But then again, Maynard does everything better.

  • @dfoxx007 and @Opiate, just to add more background, Maynard also sang on Ken Andrews engineering debut, The Replicants.

I encourage anyone to pick it up.

  • @dfoxx007 and @Opiate, just to add more background, Maynard also sang on Ken Andrews engineering debut, The Replicants.

I encourage anyone to pick it up.

  • i prefer the APC version, but great tune.

  • Failure used to tour with Tool in the early 90s, so APC covering this isn't as oddball as it seems. Plus the lyrics fit nicely with Thirteenth Step's drug-rehab theme.

  • @dfoxx007 besides that, Troy played guitar in APC later....

  • People that dont know that APC covered this song dont read liner notes. An unfortunate by product of the "iTunes age".

  • This is a beautiful and unique song. I love the rise and fall of the music, the piano, crescendo, everything. Very original. I love APC's version for its uniqueness and beauty as well.

  • Something i like about APC: keep the lyrics, and general idea of the song (kinda), but re-write the music. thats cool.

  • Check out a podcast review of Failure's Fantastic Planet on Dig Me Out, a weekly podcast dedicated to digging up lost College Rock, Alt Rock, Indie Rock and Hard Rock of the 1990s, one album at a time. digmeoutpodcast . com

  • I love this damn song, yes it was APC who showed me this gem but I always wished it to be just a bit more obtainable to actually perform this song without the extra little intricacies. this is really nice just raw awesome song

  • Anyone know that the first Perfect Circle cd had the guitarist from Failure on it?

  • @plaidbeige he was on the 2nd album only on a few songs but not on thier cover of this.. lol

  • APC's version is better because of how it added a better atmosphere and kept to a uniform styling. Failure's original is a dime-a-dozen 90's ballad.

  • @TheGreatestUsernameE What you call "Uniform" I call "Lacking Dynamics".

  • @TheGreatestUsernameE

If you consider this a "dime-a-dozen 90's ballad" then you don't remember the 90's very well. The use of toms, the piano, the slow, steady build that comes to a crescendo, all these things put this several steps above a generic alternative rock song. While it has the thick "sound" of the day, it's hardly run-of-the-mill. I love the APC version as well, but I recognize the greatness and originality of the Failure version as well.

  • no matter what, greg edwards is sick

  • I know this song too because APC covered it. But in my opinion, this version is even better, and I'm listening to it at least 30 times a day.. just wonderful :)

Everytime I hear that song, I follow the lyrics with a bright smile :)

  • The climax at the end of this song is amazing because you barely hear it building up as you listen to the song. If you listen to how it's built up around 3:55 and then how it just drops back down at 4:10... wow.

  • This is great. I like it. :)

Still though, I like the feel of APC's cover more, its creepy. Like a guy in an asylum who daydreams about one of the nurses, and actually believes that she is falling in love with him. So good. But then again, I am one who enjoys the creepy stuff, like H.R. Giger and Chet Zar.

  • @Gondohar See, i saw this version as a guy who's hooked on pills, and when he winds up in the hospital due to an overdose, gets together with one of the nurses. and because she loves him, she reluctantly feeds his addiction and he uses her.

  • i understand you so much DoubleA9211,... for me this song it´s the same....

  • whenever listen to this song, i have a hard time containing myself. i cant walk straight, cant stand up straight, cant hear what someone is saying when this song plays. it would be an understatement to say i love this song

  • The ending of the great Grunge era !

  • apc's version seems to have this ethereal, other worldly vibe. failure's seems like a broken love song that builds up to a great climax. both brilliant songs (but my fave is the original!)

  • I saw APC in Austin and Corpus Christi (yes I'm a texan and I don't ride a horse to work) and they played this version at both shows. What I mean by that is that they played it heavy like this. Louder guitars, really rocked it.

  • Love APC and Maynard is my favorite vocalist, but this version owns it. I actually found out about Failure because I read something about Tool stating Failure was all of their favorite band and toured with them in '96 or somethin

  • @0raluvin I was at the show in Toronto on that tour. I had never heard of Failure and honestly didn't like them, guitars were too high pitched, plus I was eagerly waiting for Tool. A friend of mine bought Magnified, I heard that, and have been a huge fan ever since. Saw them again at The Horse Shoe(small club) in Toronto in support of Fantastic Planet(I think they opened up for Soul Coughing?), they were f'n great. I have all Ken's other albums and love them all.

  • @catdemonninja nahhh, it's just the music and the flow of it that get me to sleep. not the words, haha.

  • Failure's Fantastic Planet is a killer CD.Go and find it right now on Ebay bitches.

  • A great song. Wish this band was still together.

  • i only just learnt there was an APC cover after being a fan of these guys for ages, and holy fuck is APC's cover just cheesy shit

  • @Lortorp not really. anything keenan does pretty much rocks.

  • awesome song... apparently Keenan was a huge fan of these guys in the mid-90s, & he liked this song so much that, well, it's obvious now ;-) Whichever version you heard 1st is irrelevant... but the fact that it got some people to discover Failure, who prolly would've never heard of em to begin with cuz they're 1 of the 90s best kept secrets, is what i think Keenan was trying to accomplish by covering this song ;-)

  • im a huge apc fan, but i must say i love this so much. I like it more than the apc version

  • Love this album! Love it! Do it!

  • I had no idea APC's version was a cover. This is sick

  • @RobbByers agreed.

  • @RobbByers Yes Failure is probably one of the best bands ever. Glad ppl are figuring this out at least.

  • @RobbByers holy crap neither did I !! ... this kind of feels like finding out there are phallic symbols in all of the old Disney movies :(

  • @RobbByers Neither did I and I concur

  • Personally, I love both versions, but APC's version gets me to sleep when I can't seem to fall asleep on my own.

  • @laceezy Should I be disturbed that you use a song about kidnapping as a lullaby? I'm not, but should I?

  • @mooseyhole they said something along the lines of, "The last album by this band is amazing. Should re-record."

  • @bassgod89 Or maybe quality of music is more important than how much music you've made. Charlotte Sometimes tries tow rite a song a day, and she posts the initial recordings on her blog, but she continues to work on it, and as a result, only her best songs get to her albums and our ears.

  • Does anyone have tabs?

  • @bebopalulahola ultimate guitar dot com has a good chord tab

  • There's this girl in my class who just dropped out today. I really liked her. She wanted to be a nurse. I think she's the most beautiful girl I've seen in my life. Unfortunatley, after 5th period today, my friends came up to me and overheard a conversation between 2 friends of the girl I liked. They were talking about how the girl I liked pretended to like me. I'm really heartbroken and don't known how to deal with that. You don't call a guy cute and don't mean it. It hurts.Still care about her.

  • @LetsGetHighOnMorris terrrrrible but you think thats bad wait until the girls you date are just older enough to be creatively mean, let alone "youre cute" and not mean it. thats nothin.... phahh

  • @regalbeagleable It definitley was something man.

  • @LetsGetHighOnMorris Aww, don't be sad, punky. We can still be friends

  • @PivotStudiosXE No thanks.

  • I like this version so much better than apc

  • I heard the cover of this song by The Section Quartet. So i youtubed the song and found my next favorite band!

  • I totally dig both versions (APC, Failure). Both bring something different to the table. Personally, I like the Failure version better. So, with that said, don't hate on me for having an opinion.

  • El último disco de esta banda es una maravilla. Deberían volver a grabar.

  • @Verucarock no speak engrish?

  • @mooseyhole Yes, but better in Spanish.

  • Thanks god for alternative kids. "She acts just like a nurse, with all the other guys" I love these fucks.

  • Not bad, though you should acknowledge the song writer.

  • @MsStone77 The song writer IS acknowledged - this was written by Failure - so either Ken Andrews or Greg Edwards wrote this.

  • @MsStone77 Dumb dumb.

  • @MsStone77 the cover to the failure cd is right there.... not sure how much more you need

  • give apc some credit. if it weren't for them i wouldn't have discovered this band, and im sure im not the only one whos grateful to apc for introducing them to this wonderful underrated band.

  • @JIIIAIIIIMIIIIEIIIS I'm sure you're not the only one who discovered failure that way - I discovered them through Greg Edward's current band, Autolux (which also kicks ass, just in a very different way)

As for the APC cover, it's a really good cover - I love it when talented people take a good song and make it their own. Maynard really did that. I prefer the original, of course... but just barely.

  • @JIIIAIIIIMIIIIEIIIS did u know that maynard took failure under his wing and help them perfect there music and that the guitarest from failure played guitar for APC on the second album?

  • @JIIIAIIIIMIIIIEIIIS I'll give them credit for an ambitious cover. I knew about this band before APC was even a band.

  • Amen Brother James

  • @JIIIAIIIIMIIIIEIIIS Heh, I'll allow it.

  • @JIIIAIIIIMIIIIEIIIS - That is certainly a valid point.

  • @JIIIAIIIIMIIIIEIIIS - That is certainly a valid point. Kudos.

  • ( Continued from below) @ kraphul with a different take. There would be NO APC cover song to record without Failure's original song. If you're going to act like a douche at least have some logic to what you say instead of spouting off like a highschooler.

  • @ kraphul, dude nobody is forcing you to like failure's song, you're entitled to your own opinion. But you sound like a retarded moron by saying this is a cover. The original is the original. Failure wrote the song, if you like APC's COVER better that's your own opinion, but stop acting like a horse's ass. Artists only cover other artists songs in the first place because they like, appreciate, and respect their work and it means something to them so they want to put the same song out there

  • i STILL run into people who have never heard of ken andrews and dont know that maynard covered the song. fools, the lot of them! ken andrews is amazing and lives inside me

  • @MiaStar easy killer. how about instead of shouting fools at them, you educate the masses. Let everyone know how fucking awesome Failure is.

  • @Zombien20 i do. i constantly make cds for new friends titled "the complete works of ken andrews" (srsly) and it contains all the failure, yotr and on cds as well as the solo 'secrets of the lost satellite' cd, and everyone who listens to the compilation loves it. this happens with a lot of bands i introduce my friends to. multitudes have become fans of matt mahaffey, and supreme beings of leisure (guys too, which i find amusing), among other artists, after meeting me.

  • perfect circles version isn't half as good as them, I personally don't care much for a perfect circle, tools great, but I still prefer Failure

  • This is an #EPIC #FAIL -ure.

  • Yo pensé que la original era de A perfect circle o_o pero ya veo q no, esta canción tiene 14 años o_____O!

  • epic failure

  • i like this version the best deffinatly but i think that APC brou their own flavor to it and brought a different point of view to it and while it wasnt as good as the original it was still good

  • YOU CANNOT DUPLICATE A MASTERPIECE.(PERIOD).

  • mm.. APC's version is Better, And It's True The Most APC Songs Are Covered

But I Think That the Cover Is Better Then The Original

  • Nice, but i like A perfect circle's version more

  • one of the great songs of the 90's i think

  • Amazing lyric.. what a sad song. living in a ilusion about someone who loved you but you invented all of it .. just a question the part who is talking about apples on the ground (it's about drops of blood)

I believed the song it's about a patient he's in a mental institution who the nurse gives him the medicine and he things that the nurse had a crush for him because she takes care of him..

  • i'm a big fan of Maynard, but i preffer this one, the original

  • When I saw APC live, James Iha was on guitar.

They did THIS version of TNWLM.

    It fuckin rocked.

  • well i don't know, but I like them both!!

  • the reason this song was covered by apc was because failures guitarist troy van leeawan also played with apc and thought it would be a cool failure song to cover, because maynard always wanted to cover a failure song since they were one of his fav bands.

  • You think that girl really likes you....and then, days later you find out that you was never the only one for her.....And i think, thats what this song is about ! But everyone see´s different things in it !......And thats why i love this music so much !

  • Yeah this is the original. Maynard and APC covered it.

  • Okay I'm a Maynard fanatic, but I like the original...It's more gritty!!!

  • Whoever thinks this is a cover is a fucking moron. This is the original. TOOL is a tool as far as I am concerned.

  • @mdeboard1 This was covered by A Perfect Circle... You're the Tool.

  • @jieuxarmeni - OK - gloves off. No shit douche bag. I was referring to Maynard's horrible rendition of this song on APC's "Thirteenth Step". As far as anyone should be concerned APC IS Tool, and I stand by my previous comment. Apparently some Tool-douches think this was an original by Maynard and his cronies. It stands that such a nasty slander should be pointed out as false. Have fun crying with Maynass while you contiunally beat your puniness to that pathetic "Thirteenth Step" piece of crap.

  • @mdeboard1 blah blah blah...get a life.

  • @mdeboard1

maynard and TOOL are very talented.. i don't know why you're bitching lol. In fact the original guitarist of Failure did the cover with A perfect circle on the record. Just because you don't like a band doesn't make them shit. They are a highly influential band. Oh and i love failure too, this is an awesome song, not ripping on failure at all.

  • I came here from the video of APC's version. Beggining sounded so dissonant to me in Failure's version, but now - I dig it:) giggity:)

  • Ummm yeah - guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen was in both APC and Failure who were quite buddy-buddy with Tool whom they toured with and had lots of tie ins with.... Ken Andrews actually directed Tools' " Prison Sex "video and although I don't think Failure "asked" APC to cover the tune - it probably was an off the cuff suggestion that came to light....

  • the perfect circle cover didn't do this song justice. they destroyed this amazing song. i like perfect circle but they shouldn't have touched this song

  • Failure wrote this song; A Perfect Circle covered it.

I've heard A.P.C.'s version and, although it is good, I think it is way inferior to the original.

    Failure was awesome, period.

  • Wow the original is so much better!!!

  • that is not to say that failure doesnt have a unique sound. its certainly a unique sound with the instrument that is ridged and you run a stick across to make the sound. forgive me for not knowing the name. I am ignorant in this specific interest, but it doesnt make me wrong. or right for that matter

  • this is a good song. but they do sound less unique than apc. apc is more focused on the singing than the guitar. for instance there is no guitar break down or hard chords. that is possibly why people say this is more radio friendly. if you disagree then go ahead and do so.

  • i really like this song. :P

  • my god this album is amazing. i already knew that i just thought i should share.

  • "Say hello / to everything you've left behind / it's even more a part of your life now that you can't touch it"

    Genius...

  • Comment removed

  • this is one of my favorite songs

  • ♥ im a fan of Tool but i should say i like this original version better.

  • @Castrate666 the cover is made by a perfect circle, tool doesn't have nothing to do with this...

  • Failure = John Lennon (ken andrews) and Paul Mccartney (Greg Edwards) of alternartive rock

  • wow, this is good!!!

  • I heard this version years before the other one existed so,, APC'Sversion seems pointless or boring It's the only song on " Thirteenth Step"that I don't really like

Ironic... In a Way though I guess both versions are cool in a way...

    Failure and APC kick ass

    Great POst

  • Troy Von Leuvin of APC played guitar in Failure. Probably the only reason they covered it.

  • this version is failure

  • The live video of this tune fuckin kills.

  • Everything about this song is amazing.
