  • Its not viral! I like how poeple say 'we are making a viral video'. The audience decides if its viral after its made!

  • Yes you must always look your best when you are on Radio you silly wanker

  • why is this shit under viral?

  • stupid video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • why the hell is there a make up and costumes department for radio??

  • @george1510gd I think that's the joke... :)

  • ningmoss: it's a joke you muppet, it was referenced on the Today programme at the process's beginning and end - they were doing a piece about whether viral marketing works.

  • @Duffio I know it was viral, if you had bothered to read all comments you would have realised that was aware of this 'viral' video. Now who's the muppet?

  • I love it!!!

  • Sorry, but some of those images will now haunt me as I wake up to the Today programme each morning. I can never listen to Jim Naughtie again ! .... Never !

  • Did anyone realise that this was an attempt to demostrate the viral ad concept ?

  • funny

  • Pants until the closing shots of the team (at 2.39).

    Esp Jim Naughtie.

  • There's a comment here comparing this with The Office. I think there are closer links with more traditional absurd/clowning like Python. Good straight-faced performance though

  • I assume anyone who thinks the humour in this vid is subtle is American. It's not remotely subtle is it? If you need a frying pan wrapped round someone's head as your cue to laugh you should probably look at something else. It just isn't funny. Typically BBC-twee - a bit cringeworthy. They're good at cringeworthy.

  • Ooo get you! Actually, this comment contains 3 contradictory statements. No indication which one you meant.

  • Yeah. You don't understand what I've written do you? It wasn't meant as a personal attack on you, you pompous turkey. That was though.

  • A laugh and a good example of all the hype around viral marketing. Some people actually try to make money out of this! Well done R4!

  • RE THE SURPRISINGLY FEW NUMBERS VIEWING THIS AD DESPITE ITS MENTIONS ON RADIO 4: Ah, but how many Today programme listeners were as daft as I was and watched the (higher quality) video via the programme's website? Well, I did EVENTUALLY realise that I should have watched it on YouTube.... and I did appreciate the team's, er, humour. Do some of you others REALLY take all this seriously - or are YOU having the rest of us on?!!

  • Very good!

  • haha - subtle indeed but funny none the less

  • heard about this on the radio this morning..nice work!

  • Brilliant, and lovely seeing responses from folks who have no idea what the Today program is!

I'll never be able to listen to James Naughtie in the same way again.

  • Hang on....that was a comedy?

  • Personally I found this very good, however, it is unlikely to make the viewing figures they were hoping for mainly due to the fact the comedy in the video is very subtle. That said however the Today programme is quite subtle, well, unless Humpy gets his teeth into someone, or you can discount Evans chest furniture and the silent GH in Jim's surname!!

  • wow a video made by rubber republic with more than 12k views!! amazing!

  • very good.very interesting to note this sites updates.

  • very funny.....and erotic!

  • HaHaHa - Excellent.

  • brilliant! i thought it was serious until the wardrobe sketch

  • Bay City Rollers.

    He just points.

    Love it!!!!!

  • This lady looks unhappy, I wonder why?

  • LOL!!

  • its a mixture of basil from faulty towers and monty python all in one......british to the core!!!

  • Splendid. Especially the thong. I sort of always knew, somehow...

  • A gem!

  • I assumed it was timed to coincide with Red Nose Day. Not a proper "viral" video, otherwise I wouldn't have watched it only after hearing the trail on "Toady" this morning..

  • Just the images we need at 6:30 in a morning. I too was hoping Sarah would be included, mind you, the voice is enough to keep me going all day. I really should get out more! And, of course Ed should have been exposed in his posh kit. Long may we be British!

  • Excellent!

Curious about what Sarah & Ed's costumes are?

  • Very good :)

  • Isn't it strange that for once, radio is exactly the same as one's imagination. None of this surprises me. I am just glad that journalists can get this sort of therapy via the licence fee. I do know that behind John Humphrys' newspaper was a vintage copy of "Bunty". I feel that he could just have been a touch more honest!

  • This is awful, I still have only my imagination to see Sarah Montague in the dominatrix costume that I know she wears.

  • Well done to all .. very british

  • Bonkers, but not really surprising! ... well done

  • James! DO NOT wear a white thong....

Darker colours are much more suitable.

  • Just as I imagined it....

  • I see the pills aren't working. Ask your doctor to up the dose.

  • Being English is not a crime

When it seems like it might be payback time.

  • There there dear, it's only a commercial!

Perhaps you'd better have a little lie down.

  • the obama deception (youtube)

  • Very funny loved it

    Great work all

  • Didn't the BBC radio presenters have to wear black tie in the early years of broadcasting ?

  • Too long

  • Not exactly a Viral, but a funny watch. The idea of a Viral is that it spreads unders it's own "steam", not plugged by the author on a National Mainstream radio show. Looks more like a sketch for Comic Relief than a viral video.

  • I knew there was something strange going on at Radio 4....please no more thongs! I will never recover from that image...

  • just found this by chance, OMG i will never hear Today the same ever again. Listen every day so its cool to see what the studio and offices look like and from now on i will visulise Evan in a space suit when ever hes on the radio

  • Quintessential stereotype! Will bring a smile listening to the morning broadcast.

  • Very funny, well done.

  • It may not be a "true" viral, but it's had over 9,000 views. If you discount repeat viewings, that's still several thousand individuals...

Better than Evan's stand-up routine (5S4rqxTeSCc), which has only achieved 1,200 views so far...

  • subtler than you think. Very well acted

  • Hilarious!!

  • Well, I loved it, but it's not really a viral per se and it does not really stand on its own. It would not mean much to people who didn't know about the show, so it would be unlikely to spread a great deal without being plugged on the radio (which rather counts as cheating if it takes place on your own programme). Now, if CNN runs a story on it, then perhaps - just perhaps - it's getting somewhere.

  • Who is the actress? She's very good.

  • Not really a viral, particularly as it was plugged on the radio. It didn't get to me on its own accord today so I searched for it on Youtube. I would only send it to people who I know listen to the Today program - and that's not the point of a viral which is meant to get everywhere

  • LOVED IT 100%

Good to laugh at yourself once in a while and not take life too serious.

As for the majority of negative comments No wound Radio 4 listeners are labelled as boring old farts with no sense of humour.

Keep up the good work boys.

  • Will make me think tomorrow morning when I listen in , wondering what they are all wearing! LOL

  • If you are familiar with the personalities and/or what the BBC/R4 stands for, then this very amusing (as I found it). Would work well on. I feel it would work well on the BBC to attract new listeners but not necessarily outside of that audience. Made me laugh though, well done.

  • Love Evan Davies' dress set hahaha

  • Made it to Luxor Egypt

  • Adorable!

  • Great! i guess the critical comments are also meant to be humorous? Not a bad effort homorous critics but not as funny as the video. Must try harder.

  • Made it Vancouver Island. kind of unviral, though, trailed on the radio. if it were a proper viral challenge, you'd have let it spread by itself. also, this kind of thing works either by people wondering if it's real or by being edgy in style or content. and very short. this feels like a cross between dead ringers and a bbc trailer. better to have had short 'leaked' clips of fake phone footage: john blowing his top at a celeb, next to evan in costume & naked jim grilling a nonplussed politician

  • Excellent made me smile. The space suit was great! Obviously some so called intelligent listeners have forgotten how to laugh!

  • is she meant to be funny. I dont like it.

  • Love the NASA suit

  • That's kind of the point, though.

  • Ah, very sweet, also very funny actress - what a very sad bunch of miserable comments below. Hey-ho.

  • Ah you grumps, it made me chuckle!

  • I really like this, it's unexpected and sweet and funny.

  • What a mean spirited lot of comments! I really liked it. It was very funny. Clearly the humour too subtle for some people. The 'dirty' for example.

  • Almost as cringeworthy as William Hague at the Notting Hill Carnival...

  • think you should get a top designer to give the team a platform at London Fashion Week .... let John strutt his stuff

  • Not hilarious, but I liked it. Gary doing the sport at 7.30 and 8.30 is a lot funnier, always.

  • The only bit I really liked was the la-la type music at the end -- which one of the Today programme is Gloria, please?

  • This is very poor show indeed. Smacks of being forced and fake. Such a shame, I was expecting something really good. I could only just be bothered to sign in to post a comment, so passing it on would be out of the question.....

Don't pass this on, i think it would do the programme more harm than good

  • great delusions of grandeur, ningmoss - so you could only just be bothered to sign in to post a comment? Thanks for letting us know your pointlessly negative opinion, well done.

  • delusions of grandeur? The build up was weeks long, and the end result a sad disapointment. Felt more compelled to register my dissapointment than pass this bit of rubbish on...

  • Its not very original is it? Its a bit David Brent with funny costumes. The idea of a viral is to want to send it on to your mates etc. Why would I send this advert on?

    FAIL!

  • Evan Davis rocks. I never thought I'd say that.

  • Hmmm, not sure the producers of that little clip have put too much thought into that one, as it is the Today programme for which I am it's greatest fan (probably) I would have thought that a bit more effort could have been put into the creative idea, I suspect a lot of school children regularly have the idea of dressing up and videoing themselves.

Can't believe it's only had 201 views yet it was announced live this morning on the programme.

  • think YouTube takes a few hours to update, otherwise 1 in 2 people who have viewed it have commented!

  • A viral needs to be edgy, clever and funny. Sadly this is none of the above. I wonder if it started off being funnier but everyone had a point of view -in doing so eroded any comic value? If the Beeb paid for this they should get their money back.

  • (Actually, it's a little bit reminiscent of Chris Morris's "fussy eating newsreader" sketch from Blue Jam, but that's not a bad thing)

  • Some people here clearly need to lighten up. It's funny and quirky, and who cares if you have to watch the programme to understand this vid? Does everything have to be universally acceptable so all the thickies can understand?

  • You're all mad, it's hilarious.

  • Nice idea, but a wee bit over-cooked... Viewed in Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire...

  • Edward Stourton and Sarah Montague didn't even get a look in, I wonder if they get the cast off's? Viewed near debtors retreat

  • I can't get the image of Sarah Montague wearing one of John Humphrys dirty Claudia Schiffer's now!!

  • This Viral is almost a perfect example of Unfunny. Was that the aim? Terrible and embarrassing.

  • I dont think thats going to go very far.

    a) its not that funny

    b) it only works if you are a listener to the programme. People who dont know about it will probably not really see how much of a spoof it is

    c) I would imagine that most of the audience are not particularly bothered with forwarded funny stuff to their friends.

Rubber republic don't seen to understand the concept of viral marketing very well...

  • Excellent - Watched in Bristol

  • Fabulous! Smitten of Elgin.

  • Excellent!

  • LOL!

  • Hilarious!

  • I always wondered what Evan looked like - he has such a nice voice - wouldn't have sent the video on though. This comes from the edge of the world - Scotland.

  • Splendid! Viewed in the Royal Crescent, Bath, UK.

  • Quite funny, but far too long. Stick to viral radio. A loyal fan.

  • Doesn't really work I'm afraid though acting good.

  • Love the Evan wardrobe... and penguin... do you have any propellers please?

  • Utilising millions of pounds worth of computer and telephonic networking hardware, I have managed to access this gem from Chelsea.

  • I've always wondered what the Today presenters looked like, now i know.....

  • OK Preston has viewed your virus - although agree with monkey that not technically a virus

    good non the less

  • :-)

  • All the way to Warwickshire......brilliant!

  • Very good, but not really viral sicne it has been launched/ promoted on national radio.

Viral videos are spread by "word of mouth". The clip should have been posted and left...Now that would be an interesting experiment.

    Monkey

  • A bit of fun definately. but far too slow and fairly obvious. For a viral to work it needs to have more pace and a good hook. Why would I want to send this to a friend? It is 3 minutes with only one core idea and then poorly developed. Maybe the Today programme should stick to radio :-)

  • This has reached Brussels. I'd have to move back to the UK if I couldn't get Radio 4 longwave and the today programme.

  • reached humphries home town of Cardiff!

  • Greetings from Missoula, Montana USA! Love Radio 4! This is just how I always pictured how you all worked....

  • this is going on my facebook :o)

  • Not clever enough to be viral. The wardrobe department idea was good, the identical jumpers clever but the rest didn't deliver. Try again

  • Yes, you managed to arouse my curiousity (at least) in SW France, even a smile tho' it's a bit early in the day for that!

The "maquilleuse" est magnifique, who is she?

  • Reached Laufenthal (population 201), Bavaria.

  • Luxembourg's Euroaudio vote for video: neuf points.

For comments: trois points (you don't half have some tossers in your audience).

    Cowgazer

  • Incredibly this has now reached Peckham.

  • haha Evan's makeup area!

  • Watched in Southern Japan, why? Curiosity, and admiration for the Today programme since, golly, 1983, at least.

    Toodle-pip,

    Hootsman.

  • Am listening in Albania. A home sick ex-pat. A bit of mad British humour, just the tonic I needed

  • Excellent! Well put together and a good bit of fun.

  • To be truly addicitive, the punch line needs to come at the end, not the beginning. Good production values though.

  • April 1st, eh?

Is that Mrs Whitnall, by the way?

  • Reached Iceland.

  • Folkestone rocked when it saw this

  • No surprises here. Much as one imagines from listening to it

  • favourite bit is evan and the propeller belt.

  • Confirms my worst fears.

  • Greetings from Mallorca, Spain, though I listen to you in Tanger, Morocco, and sometimes Cairo, Egypt.

  • Good Luck to the "Today Programme"

  • As funny as this is I was hoping someone would be beating that blood thirsty psycho Humphries a little harder. He's like Alf Garnet crossed with Rush Limbaugh pretending to be moderate.

  • Very droll. But who's the girl? I want to have her babies.

  • Evan - predictable! Good fun and seen in Tokyo where it is 5.30pm

  • Just that thought has put me off my breakfast

  • Pimp suit - lol. Very Good !

  • Thank you BobHaulk, your DMG Holdings paradigm on life is, as always, a bemusing treat to behold.

  • Greetings from Edinburgh!

  • The best thing I have seen in a long time!

  • Comment removed

  • You have to admit the Evan Davies gag is pretty funny.... But this probably only works for people who listen to Radio 4 (apart from 'thought for the day' obviously when everyone switches to Radio 2 for 10 mins). so I don't think it would work for those who don't know the programme... nice try though.

  • Very funny. James in a thong.....What a thought. Good level of humour for such an excellent program. Toungue placed with eccessive firmness in the cheek. Loved the identical clothes idea for John. It got to Holland and is on it's way to Australia.

  • Made it to Adelaide, South Australia :-)

  • No wonder Jim Naughtie did not want to comment on this.

  • " Studio's " ???

  • "egos"? you betcha! a lot of truth in there.

  • Lord Reith must be turning in his tutu!

  • Bookmarked. Thanks for that.

    (Greetings from France)

  • That put a smile on my face - although I'm not sure i want to think about Jim Naughtie in a thong....

  • loved it, shared it...Naughty Naughtie....

  • Mmm! I've always had suspicions about Evan Davies

  • The programme is much better than this lame joke. If it were not for the free advertising on 'Today' this video would sink without trace...

  • This has affected me deeply.

  • Ed said the first challenge is to find the viral, well it wasn't very hard.

Also, should have guidance advice - semi-clad Jim - wish I had been warned.
