Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one..? Then I come into U tube and find there are so many like me ....listening to the miracles! Look at the comments here ...yes there still are many of us that appreciate ..."The Miracles"
Thanks for posting this. Nice to see Grant Mitchell, a character actor who never disappoints. Who can forget his small but memorable role in Dinner at Eight. Great song - another Warren/Dubin hit!
Powell had such a fine tenor voice and cheeky/modern screen presence--being boyishly good looking didn't hurt!!. He was a song and dance man par exellence in the '30's before doing a 360 with his career by playing private dick Richard Marlowe in the '40's, then became a movie/tv producer in the 50's. Not that many actors had a versatile career like that.
As we learned later after she started dancing with Fred Astaire Ginger Rogers was a much better dancer than Ruby Keeler. The 2 best female tap dancers in movies were Eleanor Powell and Ann Miller.
After Dick Powell left Warners Bros he started making movies for RKO. Those pictures were called film noir after the French type of films. This was in the mid 1940's. He played the detective Philip Marlowe among others.Yes he also was on radio as Richard Diamond. Later he started directing movies for TV. A complete reversal from his musical film days.
I remember in the days before we had TV in New Zealand, staring at the radio as we listened to something (?) starring Dick Powell as Richard Diamond.......
@kerimac100 That's really cool. I didn't know he did radio. I'm going to see if I can hunt down some episodes. Thanks for sharing. What a voice he has!!!
@KerrieGrant --Cheers, Kerrie! Richard Diamond was a detective & I loved him desparately (aged about 10). When I discovered DickPowell was as handsome as I'd imagined & could sing, I was over the moon!
@kerimac100 - How fortunate you were to have that radio experience - letting your imagination fly with the help of such wonderful writing (by Blake Edwards) and acting by Dick Powell - love him!
This verse if this song is the same basic melody that Harry Warren and Al Dubin used the following year for "I'm Going Shopping With You" from Goldiggers of 1935, which was also sung by Dick Powell.
Compare: "You may not be an angel, 'cause angels are so few, but until the day that one comes along, I'll string along with you."
With: "Whenever you go shopping, to buy a dress that's new, Honey I'll keep and eye on the dresses you try on, 'cause I'm going shopping with you"
It's a great little film, with wonderful Harry Warren/Al Dubin hits and three songs sung by the Mills brothers. Dick Powell shines and Pat O'Brien as his agent is hilarious.
Ginger comes to the rescue once again. She is marvelous. Her dress is lovely. I always wanted to be able to wear clothes as well as Ginger does but I could never pull it off. She new how to wear clothes to their and hers best advantage. Thanks for the video.
@keleigh97 I totally agree. Arlene Croce said it exactly right when she wrote Ginger had "one of the most elegant dancer's bodies imaginable." Everything looked good on her, and she wore her clothes with such style. And she looked so good in hats. And was so photogenic. And was so talented. Quite a lady!!!
@KerrieGrant Ginger's panache (e.g., sartorial) inspired George Gershwin's lyric "The way you wear your hat, / The way you hold your tea . . . [and The way you dance 'til three] . . . / The memory of all that -- / No, no, they can't take that away from me!"
Hmmm! That's an easy one. Though the "collar" is cut quite low, I've had the advantage of seeing a photo of new shoes attached to non-cankled power-gams, if you know what I mean.
Thanks for posting this. I saw this movie on tv when I was in the 4th grade and had no idea who any of these people were. I just fell in love with the song and still love it 53 years later.

@nbianco , lol, how efficient! Recycling tunes . . . As over the decades, Bob Hope customized new lyrics to "Thanks for the Memory."

Ginger Rogers had one of the most beautiful shapes in Hollywood. Maybe all the dancing.
enaj78 2 years ago
Im sure the dancing had something to do with it. But Ginger was also a near champion tennis player and swimmer among other things.
