  • That Dislike Bar is Razor Thin !!!!

  • The opening is so epic i cant get over it!

  • Rush is the most amazng, powerful band in every way, of all time. They make it so you want to cry during a rock song... along with trying to catch up with Peart's amazing drums. I was named after Alex Lifeson. :D

  • Rush.... the only band that makes me cry...such deep lyrics... and the best music only comparable to classical music

  • goosebumps, all i can say, goosebumps

  • these guys ...are unlike any group. i love them.their integrity, talent and power.

  • I'm addicted to Rush.

  • A show of hands is the best live album rush has to offer.

  • estoy llorando con esta cancion. me la pila chinita

  • Alex lifeson is THE best guitarist to walk this fucking earth. This gives me goosebumps. Everytime.

  • One of their best

  • This is super!!

  • love this times a million

  • RESPONSE TO THE TOP COMMENT:

accept that led zepplin and pink floyd could never play this.

  • this song is like a song you would hear at the end of the world, but its okay, because theres one last stand and eveyones together feeling good. and theres hope that the world wont end. my favourite rush song. and most favourite song ofall time.

  • 4:50 One of Lifesons best solos. I get emotional just thinking of it. Amazing!

  • @BillBrolse You got that Right Brother !!

  • @BillBrolse Totally agree.. I cry everytime... Don't know why...

  • yes,vectron12, i MUST agree. Alex plays so clean and makes every note count. Possibly my favorite song of all time.

  • i dunno about anyone else

but alex's guitar solo at the end makes me wanna cry tears of joy

  • @vectron12 Agreed! The whole song brings tears of joy to my eyes, no less the guitar solo :')

  • Ah yes, my favorite RUSH tune

  • Fuck yah - any guitarist worth a shit knows about Alex...

  • @Nacho66 - any bassist worth a shit knows about Geddy Lee.

  • 4:57 to 5:32 play it forever and yet you would never get tired of it. Maybe, the most beautiful Alex solo together with the RIR Bravado.

  • I live and breath this song!

  • The coda is effin' ineffable!

  • ;;;;;;he doesn't actually play the keyboard intro :(

  • Just Perfect!

  • 1988 was a great year. I remember this song it reminds me of spring break. I saw the space shuttle Discovery blast off and all the beautiful girls at Thee Doll House and I met Ron Howard all on the same vacation.Good times....

  • @MrBillydoo i miss 1988...i was 21...enuff said...seeing rush in vegas for 6th time machine show friday

  • Easily the greatest power ballad of all time

  • what a great, mostly overlooked rush song. its great to hear the less obvious stuff again.

  • darned WAL bass

  • This one tour is maybe their only legendary one.Not bad for a band that never had a #1 song and only 1 top 10.About the time of this tour however, people were discovering the new "symphonic/progressive" sound through RUSH.Bands like Dream Theater quickly jumped onto this, and now Nightwish,EPICA, and many others all do this. Its gotta feel pretty cool to have started a whole genre. Many times the originators arent really recognised properly.RUSH is a band of originators.

  • magic rock of the spheres the greatest rock band trio of all times no need a place in the shitty hall of fame no sir rush go beyond long life for the tree masters and thanks for all the music

  • Seems that most/all of rush's 80' songs where compromised by the arena rock/gratuitous time change formula, does this song really need the crash of guitar and drums at 0:45?If i am wrong then, you dont have to worry about slowing it down again 1:25.I am not dissin rush i could not play it but...they really can be awful song writers, whilst being great players. It does not make sense.

  • @sysrq120 RUSH RULES IN EVERY WAY ESPECIALLY SONGWRITING.

  • Comment removed

  • Ending gets to me, too. Every time. If you ever have the chance to listen to the live version in a car with a really good system, there's nothing quite like it.

  • How a brain can make it??

  • Geddy sounds like a vocaloid during this one xD

  • I cant stop listening to this song. Its like Im back in time.

  • Why do people keep writing "Alex Lifeson Most Underreated Guitarist of All Time"? He may be not so well known to the younger age group of today, but that doesn' make him underrated! I'm 37...my age group and older know he's one of the best and people within the rock industry/other bands and performers know he's great. I see comments like that for other classic bands/guitar players as well...do you younger people think they are all underrated because your buds listen to junk of today?

  • ZAJBISTEEEEE!!!!! heto to heto karwa

  • ZAJBISTEEEEE!!!!! heto to heto

  • This is my favorite version of Mission; it sounds so much thicker and richer than in the album. Best listened after Subdivisions, as it allows you to grasp both doubt and hope for the modern society and gets you going during overnights :)

  • @DeftCrowMk3 I agree, more keyboards than the original version esp. at @ 4:16 they have been known to improve on things from time to time.. album to album... tour to tour... decade to decade....

  • Epic.

    Brilliant.

    Stunning.

When I first saw Rush in 1977 on the Farewell to Kings tour, I never thought they would still be around in 2011, now 27 Rush shows later I still am just amazed with what they do...

The last minute of this song is just a musical orgasm..... Wow.

  • Holy F...!! That's some GREAT guitar work! That last solo is amazing!

  • right on

  • my jaw dropped at the end

  • you're not weird. Mission gets me every time too ! So does Middletown Dreams and Grand Designs. Rush on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • original video please?

  • @ 3:38 = Pure insanity and musical genius

  • Beautuful and profound lylics and sound...just burst into tears everytime I listen to this number...amazing song.

  • I use to watch this video non-stop. Haven't heard these songs for years but can still sing along. God, what great memories. Hands down, the best band ever.

  • If their lives were exotic and strange

They would likely have gladly exchanged them

For something a little more plain

Maybe something a little more sane

    Burst into tears.

  • this song...is about pure passion.

  • One of my favorite Rush songs, from an underrated album (if there is such a thing from Rush).

  • Hold your fire, keep it burning bright.

  • alex is so fucking cool

  • A Show of Hands - the best ever Rush live record. The sound of the Ludwig drums, the Wal Bass, and the Signature Aurora guitar. To me it's all clarity. Nothing's too loud and distorted. The recording has the best precision performances ever caught live.

  • @SpAnKYnation44 *sigh* Neils Ludwigs......MAN they sounded great. His DWs don't compare.

  • @sgtpepper1138 I'm still partial to his beautiful Tama set from the early 80's.

  • RUSH, PINK FLOYD AND LED ZEPPELIN - GREATEST PROGRESSIVE BANDS EVER

  • @Gasten400 I like your choices. I would add Yes to that list.

  • @Gasten400 Haha, and ironically, all three representing their style of prog. Rush = Canadian, Pink Floyd = British, Led Zeppelin = American.

  • @TheNoobsauce1337

Led Zeppelin is also British not American.

  • @Gasten400 lol dont forget Yes and Genesis. although RUSH IS THE BEST, I REPEAT THE BEST ROCKIN ROLL BAND IN THE UNIVERSE!!!!

  • Amazing.......saw it live in Vancouver, Canada in FEB 1990. The "Hold your Fire" Tour did not come to Vancouver in 1998. I was really pisssed off. A Fabulous song........we should all break down listening to the ending!?!

  • AWSOME!!

  • Just perfect, inclusing the cool light show, note the blue when "it's cold inside"... At least this time I've left a comment that won't result in bended ears :-)

  • @Zuperhamster

Not sure what you mean by "bended ears," but the words "it's cold inside" don't exist in this song. Are you referring to the line "It's cold comfort, to the ones without it"?

  • @trento728

THIS song is not about suicide (duh). No one said it was. The discussion was about their song "The Pass," which is in fact about teen suicide.

  • The Mission is the best song off an underrated album.

  • When I watched this vid the 2 top rated comments had 21 "likes" and 12 "likes" 2112 hell yea. RUSH FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love it when both Geddy and Alex sing in the songs, it sounds soo unique.

  • What's you mission in life ?

Create- not destroy through ID EGO

  • Aren't you guys getting a little carried away with the talk about breaking into tears over Alex's solo? Good grief -- yes, it's a great solo, but ACTUAL tears? You're really crying? You guys need to get out of the house more.

And don't even think about questioning my cred as a Rush fan. You don't wanna go there. :-)

  • @Ken5244 a solo that moved me to tears by lifeson was the pass

  • @alexmassacre123

That's another great solo (nearly all of Alex's are), in an absolutely great song, but I can't say it brings actual tears to my eyes.

No offense, but some of you guys are gonna have to turn in your Man Cards if you keep crying during guitar solos. :-)

  • Its a song about suicide so you should be able to see why some people might tear up in that song. Neil even said he gets a little emotional when he plays it.. And not to mention the brilliant lyrics.

  • @alexmassacre123

Fair enough. I know it's a song about suicide, and I understand its potential emotional impact. Actual tears just seems a bit much (for a guy, anyway).

That said, tears over "The Pass" is not nearly as much of a stretch as literally crying during THIS song's guitar solo. I fail to see how these lyrics or the solo could inspire actual tears. This song is insightful & inspiring, not sad nor extremely evocative IMHO.

Whatever ... just my opinion. :-)

  • @Ken5244 Dude How? I'm sure you would tear up if you've ever thought about suicide in the past.. And in my opinion holding back tears is un-manly, because it shows that your trying to put on some fake front that your "manly"...

  • @alexmassacre123

I don't mean to seem insensitive. I agree that sufficient pain or emotion can evoke tears and that there's nothing wrong with that. It just seems to me that crying over the guitar solo itself is an overreaction.

As I said before, I can cut some slack re tearing up over "The Pass." But actually crying over the solo in "Mission"? Why? Anyone crying over that song obviously has an inaccurate perception of what it's about. Either that or they're just a total wuss. :-)

  • This music hit me, this is the music to listen every day!

  • If this outro doesn't light your fire, your wood is wet!!!!

  • One of my all time favorite Rush songs. Alex's lead is incredible. This song IS a religious experience.

  • The mission is all of us....

  • this song is just ammmazinnggg!!! i guess some lucky artists can be touched by god, sometimes, and i think this is one of those times..i mean..everything here is so epic,so full of meaning and space, simply perfect...thanx rush!

  • I have had the privilege of seeing these guys live once and I would love the chance to see them live again . When I saw then live it was in Atlanta on the Presto tour and all I can say about seeing them that night its like a very deep spiritual experience I have never been moved so deeply

  • Would have liked to see Neil's xylophone solo - he's not only the master drummer bar none, he's a great player of tuned percussion too.

  • I like this better than old rush.

  • Alex's outro solo makes me cry every single time

  • The passion of Alex' outro solo is a perfect example of why RUSH had stood the test of time.

  • Hahah I said to myself "Hey, let's listen 1 Rush song before going to college"...

I ended up in my house listen to all their fucking songs, I couldn't stop lol

    Damn amazing band ;)

  • Rush's music is timeless, and speaks to me on so many levels, they're the soundtrack to my life, and I wish just once I could have the chance to let them know how much better my life is because of what they're making. Keep rocking guys, don't let it ever end.

  • Absolutely brilliant! Hands down one of the best Rush songs live. Alex is soaring and beyond awesome.

  • I break down in tears listening to the ending- am I weird or just a die hard Rush fan?

  • @ollieskins You are a die hard rush fan. I know because I'm almost the same way. Meaning I almost cry.

  • @ollieskins just saw your comment. I've done it several times listening to Alex' solo. There's nothing wrong with you dude. It's a very emotional ending, I just wish they had extended it out on the studio version.

  • @ollieskins ur awesome

  • @ollieskins dont worry, i do the same thing

  • @ollieskins Only the best bands can do that to you.

  • @ollieskins you're weird..... & a die hard Rush fan, so we'll overlook it.

  • No, You're right! This solo is a goddamm emotionnal one. Espacially live!

  • @ollieskins: No, you're not weird... This song has the same effect on me! The lyrics and music are perfect together; it always reminds me of my brother who died in 1988, and it reminds me to "hold my fire". :)

  • @ollieskins - You are a die hard Rush fan. I also find myself on the verge of tears when I hear many of their songs, always has been that way. It's because their music hits a deep emotional level if you are really listening - which - based on your comment - you are! Great band of all time. Everything else seems mediocre to me by comparison....

  • @dink65 agreed.ive never heard anything like thier wonderful music.Rush to me is the best.

  • @ollieskins no you are a very special human been i love rush this song is magical and spiritual god blees you

  • @ollieskins Both! But so am I!

  • @ollieskins you aren't weird you are just passionate about the greatest band in the world!

  • @ollieskins You are correct this is one of the mos beautiful endings. I could say my seconf favorite after Old & Wise ending from Alan parsons Project. Rush On!

  • La dirección de este concierto es horrible, a Neil Peart apenas lo muestran; ni en los mejores momentos, como en el solo del xilófono en esta canción. Una lástima.

  • The end solo is breath taking.

  • geddy hair is like one of those raccoon hats ;)

  • ALEX LIFESON!! MOST UNDERRATED GUITARIST OF ALL TIME!!!

  • @TheFunnyMan9113 he's still very rich though

  • @TheFunnyMan9113

He may be "underrated" (or lesser known) by the youth of today, but back in Rush's heyday he was very well known. He won Guitar Player magazine's Best Rock Guitarist Award at least twice that I know of -- against some ridiculously tough competition -- and when he didn't win it he was close. He's graced guitar magazine covers many, many times and had scads of articles done on him over the years. Any guitarist worth their salt knows all about Alex. :-)

  • @TheFunnyMan9113 Agree with you. Alex Lifeson is a great guitar player. As underrated how Allan Holdsworth

  • @TheFunnyMan9113 your screen name may be funnyman but that comment was just plain serious!

  • @TheFunnyMan9113 ... I think even Eddie Van Halen agrees: I read an interview where he was asked, Who's your favorite guitarist? He said it was Alex Lifeson because of his amazing ability to give subtle tone and melodic coloring as he plays. Truly unique and truly amazing.

  • @jmcbogue

Interesting. I don't recall reading that particular interview. Do you happen to remember when it was done (approximately)?

  • @jmcbogue He said Alex and Steve Lukather from Toto :)

  • @jesubono ... Cool! Thanks! (I didn't read the whole interview. :-/ )

  • @jmcbogue What interview? I want to read it.

  • @TheFunnyMan9113

Alex Lifeson is one of the greatest guitarist of all time!

  • They opened into the second song with mission when I saw them last time in 2008. It was kick ass!!! Love Rush.

  • Symphonic rock..the way it's supposed to be!!! I think Rush tops em all...Still!!

  • Goto "Facebook" Exposing crimes of Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and RUSH.com (NSA.gov) - OMG I love this song!

  • ‎"A spirit with a vision is a dream with a MISSION." - Neil Peart

  • I hope, they come to Europe once again ! We love Rush

  • There are rock bands, then there is RUSH!

  • goose bumpy solo by alex

  • Comment removed

  • @cashman156 must have been watching this during an earthquake

  • LOL that fat serb guy...

  • beside neil peart, all the other drummers are crap

  • @Max2009Foda I think it would be better said kinda like this, there are drummers and then there's Neil Peart. The Professor on the Drum kit. But I've said to much already. Be Well

  • The mid section with the Xylophone is epic

  • The final guitar solo should last forever...

  • Does anyone know what kind of guitar Alex is using here? I can't get a very clear view of the headstock...

  • @GRETSCHluver

It's an Aurora model, made by the Signature Guitar Co. He had two that I know of -- a black one and a white one. I don't know whether the pickups were stock or EMGs. They sound like EMGs to me.

Before you ask, no, they don't make 'em anymore. :-( I wouldn't mind having one.

  • @Ken5244

Damn... Haha. That'd be nice to have..

    Thanks for the info though!

  • @GRETSCHluver

No problem. BTW, I did a little further research tonight and discovered I was half right re the pickups. They were EMG/Fernandes active pickups designed especially for these guitars.

  • @Ken5244 The black one was a signature Auracle, just like mine.Hope you can find one..she still is my main guitar after 23 years :)

  • @stevezane

Arrgh -- I'm so jealous! If you ever decide to sell yours, PM me.

A couple questions if you have the time:

    1) You mention the Auracles have two humbuckers. Would you have a thought on the feasibility of replacing the neck pickup with a single-coil one to get the proverbial best of both worlds? (Sort of the same idea behind putting a humbucker in a Strat's bridge position.) I'm assuming it would be doable as long as both are active pickups.

    2) How well does it stay in tune?

  • @Ken5244 You don't need to replace it with a single coil..the humbucker is splittable when you pull up the tone nob.The pickups on the Oracle are Evans.I'm sending you a link to a site of signature guitars.

  • @stevezane

Oh, okay. I never really read up on the Oracles' design characteristics. I've always been primarily interested in the Auroras.

Re the spelling, I knew "Auracle" didn't look right but I'm really tired and I was too lazy to look it up. "Oracle" it is. ;-)

Thanks for the link, although I've had it bookmarked for a long time. Just haven't read it lately. I appreciate the feedback.

  • @GRETSCHluver

It was a custom built guitar made by a company called Signature.

  • @skylarking19 you're right..he had the signature aurora...i have a signature auracle..they look the same, but the Auracle has humbuckers instead of single coils.Great guitars.

  • The guitar solo at the end is PHENOMINAL - So perfect for the song! Great guitar solos take the energy of a song to new heights and I believe this is Alex Lifeson's finest hour....It so hard to find a guitarist that plays with such passion these days....

  • Rush is being the soundtrack of my life..

memories and emotions dance crazy agitaded..

when their music RUSH trought my senses "

  • Yodas favourite lyrics....Fire you must hold, burning bright must it be....Fabulous price pay must you...Beware of whammy bar guitar solos must you be...

  • i get chills and nearly cry everytime i hear this song.. especially at the end with the solo at 4:58.... i have this dvd.... watch it every chance i get. screw the music of today, im 15 and love rush!!! <3

  • this is such a genuine track.

  • @cosmicrider287 I love Rush senn them a few times great in the 80s

  • Hold Your Fire is a superb album and this song is absolutely beautiful. One of my all time favorites.

  • without question, the greatest lyricist in rock music...

  • I TOTALLY agree with rhythman69uk =)

  • their genius lies in understanding the idiosyncrasies they create within their music joined with their understanding of how the individual pieces make the larger puzzle. seeing them play is watching the greatest painters create a masterpiece one brushstroke (note) at a time knowing that each intricate element - perhaps not individually noticeable - is critical to the larger whole...

  • @nakedchilli Very well put. Could not have said it any better

  • The instrumental break in Mission (at about 3:22 to 3:50) is one of the finest Rush moments EVER!

Of course the whole song is great too.

  • Can't Believe how good this song is. Gives me chills! How about you?

  • Who's the moron who disliked this??
