Rush is the most amazng, powerful band in every way, of all time. They make it so you want to cry during a rock song... along with trying to catch up with Peart's amazing drums. I was named after Alex Lifeson. :D
this song is like a song you would hear at the end of the world, but its okay, because theres one last stand and eveyones together feeling good. and theres hope that the world wont end. my favourite rush song. and most favourite song ofall time.
1988 was a great year. I remember this song it reminds me of spring break. I saw the space shuttle Discovery blast off and all the beautiful girls at Thee Doll House and I met Ron Howard all on the same vacation.Good times....
This one tour is maybe their only legendary one.Not bad for a band that never had a #1 song and only 1 top 10.About the time of this tour however, people were discovering the new "symphonic/progressive" sound through RUSH.Bands like Dream Theater quickly jumped onto this, and now Nightwish,EPICA, and many others all do this. Its gotta feel pretty cool to have started a whole genre.Many times the originators arent really recognised properly.RUSH is a band of originators.
magic rock of the spheres the greatest rock band trio of all times no need a place in the shitty hall of fame no sir rush go beyond long life for the tree masters and thanks for all the music
Seems that most/all of rush's 80' songs where compromised by the arena rock/gratuitous time change formula,does this song really need the crash of guitar and drums at 0:45?If i am wrong then, you dont have to worry about slowing it down again 1:25.I am not dissin rush i could not play it but...they really can be awful song writers,whilst being great players.It does not make sense.
Ending gets to me, too. Every time. If you ever have the chance to listen to the live version in a car with a really good system, there's nothing quite like it.
Why do people keep writing "Alex Lifeson Most Underreated Guitarist of All Time"? He may be not so well known to the younger age group of today, but that doesn' make him underrated! I'm 37...my age group and older know he's one of the best and people within the rock industry/other bands and performers know he's great. I see comments like that for other classic bands/guitar players as well...do you younger people think they are all underrated because your buds listen to junk of today?
This is my favorite version of Mission; it sounds so much thicker and richer than in the album. Best listened after Subdivisions, as it allows you to grasp both doubt and hope for the modern society and gets you going during overnights :)
@DeftCrowMk3 I agree, more keyboards than the original version esp. at @ 4:16 they have been known to improve on things from time to time.. album to album... tour to tour... decade to decade....
When I first saw Rush in 1977 on the Farewell to Kings tour, I never thought they would still be around in 2011, now 27 Rush shows later I still am just amazed with what they do...
The last minute of this song is just a musical orgasm..... Wow.
I use to watch this video non-stop. Haven't heard these songs for years but can still sing along. God, what great memories. Hands down, the best band ever.
Apparently they are making a GLEE episode of rush. This is not a drill. Protest as much as you can. Rush and glee don't mix. Please send the message.
A Show of Hands - the best ever Rush live record. The sound of the Ludwig drums, the Wal Bass, and the Signature Aurora guitar. To me it's all clarity. Nothing's too loud and distorted. The recording has the best precision performances ever caught live.
Amazing.......saw it live in Vancouver, Canada in FEB 1990. The "Hold your Fire" Tour did not come to Vancouver in 1998. I was really pisssed off. A Fabulous song........we should all break down listening to the ending!?!
Just perfect, inclusing the cool light show, note the blue when "it's cold inside"... At least this time I've left a comment that won't result in bended ears :-)
Not sure what you mean by "bended ears," but the words "it's cold inside" don't exist in this song. Are you referring to the line "It's cold comfort, to the ones without it"?
Aren't you guys getting a little carried away with the talk about breaking into tears over Alex's solo? Good grief -- yes, it's a great solo, but ACTUAL tears? You're really crying? You guys need to get out of the house more.
And don't even think about questioning my cred as a Rush fan. You don't wanna go there. :-)
Its a song about suicide so you should be able to see why some people might tear up in that song. Neil even said he gets a little emotional when he plays it.. And not to mention the brilliant lyrics.
Fair enough. I know it's a song about suicide, and I understand its potential emotional impact. Actual tears just seems a bit much (for a guy, anyway).
That said, tears over "The Pass" is not nearly as much of a stretch as literally crying during THIS song's guitar solo. I fail to see how these lyrics or the solo could inspire actual tears. This song is insightful & inspiring, not sad nor extremely evocative IMHO.
@Ken5244 Dude How? I'm sure you would tear up if you've ever thought about suicide in the past.. And in my opinion holding back tears is un-manly, because it shows that your trying to put on some fake front that your "manly"...
I don't mean to seem insensitive. I agree that sufficient pain or emotion can evoke tears and that there's nothing wrong with that. It just seems to me that crying over the guitar solo itself is an overreaction.
As I said before, I can cut some slack re tearing up over "The Pass." But actually crying over the solo in "Mission"? Why? Anyone crying over that song obviously has an inaccurate perception of what it's about. Either that or they're just a total wuss. :-)
this song is just ammmazinnggg!!! i guess some lucky artists can be touched by god,sometimes,and i think this is one of those times..i mean..everything here is so epic,so full of meaning and space,simply perfect...thanx rush!
I have had the privilege of seeing these guys live once and I would love the chance to see them live again . When I saw then live it was in Atlanta on the Presto tour and all I can say about seeing them that night its like a very deep spiritual experience I have never been moved so deeply

@ollieskins - You are a die hard Rush fan. I also find myself on the verge of tears when I hear many of their songs, always has been that way. It's because their music hits a deep emotional level if you are really listening - which - based on your comment - you are! Great band of all time. Everything else seems mediocre to me by comparison....
@ollieskins You are correct this is one of the mos beautiful endings. I could say my seconf favorite after Old & Wise ending from Alan parsons Project. Rush On!
La dirección de este concierto es horrible, a Neil Peart apenas lo muestran; ni en los mejores momentos, como en el solo del xilófono en esta canción. Una lástima.
He may be "underrated" (or lesser known) by the youth of today, but back in Rush's heyday he was very well known. He won Guitar Player magazine's Best Rock Guitarist Award at least twice that I know of -- against some ridiculously tough competition -- and when he didn't win it he was close. He's graced guitar magazine covers many, many times and had scads of articles done on him over the years. Any guitarist worth their salt knows all about Alex. :-)
@TheFunnyMan9113 ... I think even Eddie Van Halen agrees: I read an interview where he was asked, Who's your favorite guitarist? He said it was Alex Lifeson because of his amazing ability to give subtle tone and melodic coloring as he plays. Truly unique and truly amazing.
@Max2009Foda I think it would be better said kinda like this, there are drummers and then there's Neil Peart. The Professor on the Drum kit. But I've said to much already. Be Well
It's an Aurora model, made by the Signature Guitar Co. He had two that I know of -- a black one and a white one. I don't know whether the pickups were stock or EMGs. They sound like EMGs to me.
Before you ask, no, they don't make 'em anymore. :-( I wouldn't mind having one.
No problem. BTW, I did a little further research tonight and discovered I was half right re the pickups. They were EMG/Fernandes active pickups designed especially for these guitars.
Arrgh -- I'm so jealous! If you ever decide to sell yours, PM me.
A couple questions if you have the time:
1) You mention the Auracles have two humbuckers. Would you have a thought on the feasibility of replacing the neck pickup with a single-coil one to get the proverbial best of both worlds? (Sort of the same idea behind putting a humbucker in a Strat's bridge position.) I'm assuming it would be doable as long as both are active pickups.
@Ken5244 You don't need to replace it with a single coil..the humbucker is splittable when you pull up the tone nob.The pickups on the Oracle are Evans.I'm sending you a link to a site of signature guitars.
@skylarking19 you're right..he had the signature aurora...i have a signature auracle..they look the same,but the Auracle has humbuckers instead of single coils.Great guitars.
The guitar solo at the end is PHENOMINAL - So perfect for the song! Great guitar solos take the energy of a song to new heights and I believe this is Alex Lifeson's finest hour....It so hard to find a guitarist that plays with such passion these days....
Yodas favourite lyrics....Fire you must hold,burning bright must it be....Fabulous price pay must you...Beware of whammy bar guitar solos must you be...
i get chills and nearly cry everytime i hear this song.. especially at the end with the solo at 4:58.... i have this dvd.... watch it every chance i get. screw the music of today, im 15 and love rush!!! <3
their genius lies in understanding the idiosyncrasies they create within their music joined with their understanding of how the individual pieces make the larger puzzle. seeing them play is watching the greatest painters create a masterpiece one brushstroke (note) at a time knowing that each intricate element - perhaps not individually noticeable - is critical to the larger whole...

@TheFunnyMan9113 Agree with you. Alex Lifeson is a great guitar player. As underrated how Allan Holdsworth

@TheFunnyMan9113 your screen name may be funnyman but that comment was just plain serious!

@jmcbogue
Interesting. I don't recall reading that particular interview. Do you happen to remember when it was done (approximately)?
Ken5244 11 months ago
@jmcbogue He said Alex and Steve Lukather from Toto :)

@jesubono ... Cool! Thanks! (I didn't read the whole interview. :-/ )

@Max2009Foda I think it would be better said kinda like this, there are drummers and then there's Neil Peart. The Professor on the Drum kit. But I've said to much already. Be Well

Does anyone know what kind of guitar Alex is using here? I can't get a very clear view of the headstock...
GRETSCHluver 1 year ago
@GRETSCHluver
Ken5244 1 year ago
@Ken5244
Damn... Haha. That'd be nice to have..
Thanks for the info though!

@GRETSCHluver
No problem. BTW, I did a little further research tonight and discovered I was half right re the pickups. They were EMG/Fernandes active pickups designed especially for these guitars.
Ken5244 1 year ago
@Ken5244 The black one was a signature Auracle, just like mine.Hope you can find one..she still is my main guitar after 23 years :)
stevezane 1 year ago
@stevezane
2) How well does it stay in tune?
Ken5244 1 year ago
@Ken5244 You don't need to replace it with a single coil..the humbucker is splittable when you pull up the tone nob.The pickups on the Oracle are Evans.I'm sending you a link to a site of signature guitars.
stevezane 1 year ago
@stevezane
Oh, okay. I never really read up on the Oracles' design characteristics. I've always been primarily interested in the Auroras.
Re the spelling, I knew "Auracle" didn't look right but I'm really tired and I was too lazy to look it up. "Oracle" it is. ;-)
Thanks for the link, although I've had it bookmarked for a long time. Just haven't read it lately. I appreciate the feedback.

@GRETSCHluver
It was a custom built guitar made by a company called Signature.

The guitar solo at the end is PHENOMINAL - So perfect for the song! Great guitar solos take the energy of a song to new heights and I believe this is Alex Lifeson's finest hour....It so hard to find a guitarist that plays with such passion these days....
