I'm thinking of getting a saluki next year and was wondering what their stamina is like? because all my dogs tire reasonably quickly when chasing foxes and hares and I've heard saluki's are one of the best hunting breeds?

@LunaTemari You do realize the hounds very rarely catch the foxes, right?  They are called off before they can kill it. They are NOT encouraged to kill the fox. Most good hunts know the local foxes and can recognize the foxes by their manuevers (through steams, ences, back tracking, etc.) The fox lives to run another day. Also, foxhunts are illegal in England now. Usually they have people drag a trail using fox urine, or some hunts are starting to train fox hounds to other scent trails.

The Saluki definately is faster. it can run at fast sppeds for a longer time than the grey hound.

Greyhounds can accelerate quicker and possibly reach higher speeds in bursts, though. Stamina definitely goes to the Saluki.

There is nothing more beautiful than a working dog doing exactly what he was intended to. I feel a bit of pity for the prey animals subjected to this activity, but the physical abilities of the dogs (and the gazelle too, I give it a lot of credit for being able to run that fast that far) is simply breath taking.

In ireland we course with mainly one dog . Thus givin the prey a fair chance. Using more than one dog we call "doubling up" this would give the dogs less credibility if they are successful .

you are a absolutely right. Saluki dog can catch a gazelle by runing for long distance after a gazelle. I my self have seen my Saluki the one in this video run for 8000 meter (eight thousend meters) 8km untile he cought the gazelle. when the cheeta if it dose not cach the gazelle in 800 mtters he is gone

yes, very much so, cheetahs sprint, they don't run, which means they burst out at a frightening speed but become tired quickly, unlike salukis who are bred to run tirelessly for a long period of time
