i'm not sure where you are, but currently in the united states, from my knowledge only three cities have wimax available and it is not free. i am aware some cities in the world do offer free wimax.
wimax service here is provided by clearwire and sprint. both charge monthly fees. and it is not cheap either from what i've read.

they say they've improved the keyboard on the wimax edition, does it feel better than the original?
also, does the bulge on the back from the wimax antenna make the device less pocket friendly? harder to hold? harder to use when laid down on a table?
silly question but the wimax edition can use both wifi and wimax, correct?

no it doesn't cost monthly. It is just over the air if it is in your city.
