Plus, when people who can't afford health insurance go to the emergency room, you pay for it anyway, at an extremely bloated rate. Hospitals and and doctors overcharging insurance companies has contributed to this mess too. If Germany, France, Netherlands, Australia, and every other industrialized nation can do it we can too.

Banks don't work for free. And Bush found a way to get them paid. That's health care reform under the Republicans. You get your "choice" of companies that will take your money without making the insurance companies capitulate in any way.
Then why not fix that by opening the insurance market nationwide just like people buy car and house insurance? That would be a simple fix of deregulating the insurance companies. Why not make insurance portable and not tied to your job? I know the unions don't like that one but it would be a big help. How about some tort reform so hospitals and doctors don't have to practice defensive medicine? Why not start with these fixes and go from there?
The competition would put enormous pressure on the insurance companies to offer a good product at a competitive price. Why not allow health insurance to tailor their services like car insurance does and allow you to pick and chose what you want to be covered for as well as for how much? If I drove a brand new Mercedes, I would be willing to pay more for insurance than if I drove a 1991 T-Bird.
I am not familiar with Texas Health Insurance but if some of the companies are so bad, people will move away from them for something better, effectively putting them out of business. If the insurance market were to be wide open, what would stop you from going online and checking out all sorts of plans and choosing the one that fits your needs. You can do that with car/home insurance.
Think how quickly some of the changes I mentioned could be implemented. It wouldn't involve a 2000+ page pork-filled bill. Considering the bribes that had to be added to get votes, look at what that has added to the cost of this bill - indirect costs but costs none the less. LA is getting $300,000,000. NE won't have to pay their portion of Medicare but the rest of the states will have to make up the difference. This all could be so easy at least as a beginning.
Talk about making some enemies pretty damn fast. Franken has five years to go and he is in for one hell of a ride after 2010. Isn't Stewart Smally cute though?

@creativebuzz You're right, tort reform would have been a great starting point. So would ending the anti-trust law exemption for insurance companies. Plus, when people who can't afford health insurance go to the emergency room, you pay for it anyway, at an extremely bloated rate. Hospitals and and doctors overcharging insurance companies has contributed to this mess too. If Germany, France, Netherlands, Australia, and every other industrialized nation can do it we can too.

Then why not fix that by opening the insurance market nationwide just like people buy car and house insurance? That would be a simple fix of deregulating the insurance companies. Why not make insurance portable and not tied to your job? I know the unions don't like that one but it would be a big help. How about some tort reform so hospitals and doctors don't have to practice defensive medicine? Why not start with these fixes and go from there?

We let everyone sell health insurance in Texas & about half of the companies should be driven out of the state.
We have a few that will sell you health insurance for $20-30 per month - of course they always find one reason or another to pay nothing out.

The competition would put enormous pressure on the insurance companies to offer a good product at a competitive price. Why not allow health insurance to tailor their services like car insurance does and allow you to pick and chose what you want to be covered for as well as for how much? If I drove a brand new Mercedes, I would be willing to pay more for insurance than if I drove a 1991 T-Bird.

I am not familiar with Texas Health Insurance but if some of the companies are so bad, people will move away from them for something better, effectively putting them out of business. If the insurance market were to be wide open, what would stop you from going online and checking out all sorts of plans and choosing the one that fits your needs. You can do that with car/home insurance.

Think how quickly some of the changes I mentioned could be implemented. It wouldn't involve a 2000+ page pork-filled bill. Considering the bribes that had to be added to get votes, look at what that has added to the cost of this bill - indirect costs but costs none the less. LA is getting $300,000,000. NE won't have to pay their portion of Medicare but the rest of the states will have to make up the difference. This all could be so easy at least as a beginning.

The stimulus is not the reason Ford sale are. Ford sales are up because they know what they are doing dumb ass. We still have really high unempyolment which is at 10%.
