LOL, I love the continuity announcer after that montage of idents. "Well, just in case you're thoroughly confused, I can assure you you're watching BBC 2."
@woollylinnet No, can't believe I didn't pick up on that. Basically this whole thing was pretty lazily done. Then again most ident fans - e.g. me - are socially illiterate and would never pass an audition to narrate something like this, so it's no wonder they got someone in who doesn't have a clue :D
@VectorOmega Not sure whether they're good ones, but the ATV In Colour ident is my ringtone, while the 1970s Yorkshire one provides my text message alert.
He talks about the design approach hardly changing, and holds up as a counterpoint an Anglia ident that was, uh, basically the same as the B&W days! All they added was the rotation.
@eszettfromhell Did you also notice him holding up the ABC, Rediffusion and ATV idents as setting early precedents, while what we actually saw was the 1970s ATV ident rendered in B&W?
That channel 4 ident is in my opinion the best ident ive ever seen. So bold and uplifting. Not like the ones they have now, whilst interesting, lack SOUL. Lack everything else on TV since the late 90's.
I just CANNOT believe this was almost 20 years ago! I remember watching TLS as a student, it was on every night during the week (except Friday, I believe). Fascinating to see how much - and also how little - things have changed on British TV.
Very interesting to see all these logos again. This was indeed a clip from BBC2's The Late Show in 1989 (and which ran until 1995). Tracey McLeod was the main presenter, with Peter York as well.
Because he's Peter York, the man who has been equally sarcastic about the Yuppies of the 1980's, with a generous dollop of wit. Tracie McLeod was just a snob. Mike S.
ITV has the gay flag on the last letter :O

Would it be possible to recreate the BBC/ITV ident music with Famitracker? Also, what BBC/ITV ident music would make a really good ringtone?

Very biased and one eyed reporting from the BBC. Praise BBC, slag off the 'small, inferior' ITV stations.
I was hoping for some insight here, but what we got was some posh bloke just taking the piss.

I like it how they make such a big thing about BSB, even though it failed about a year later!

@ianhawdon Yer and some at the BBC said SKY would not last 3 years,Now it 22 years later so it has lasted so in your face BBC people and BBC lovers.

thanks that was interesting!

This clip was worthless without the seizure-inducing Harlech logo.
I can't help it. To my American eyes, that was the most epic logo EVER.

It did, at least, include that creepy, menacing, fascinating Ulster logo. That is, by far, one of my favourites.
sirmustapha 3 years ago
*heh* Fair enough. The original Ulster ident was pretty cool with the lovely/creepy Celesta music.

Is there somebody who knows the tune of the earlier BBC2's The Late Show?

Great clip, but why does the man have to be so sarcastic about tv idents, and the wiman at the start is even more sarcastic and up herself!
