Steppenwolf...ahhhhh ... great music from great musicians! I got into them in the early to mid 70s. "Head music" was what it was called by a lot of people & it did get into your head. Now it's past 2010 & Steppenwolf still lives! That says alot about this group! I love their music, always will.
Great song, the guitar solo is amazing. I listened to this album every day when I was 13 back in 1972 and it still holds up. I remember seeing them play this on a TV show back then and John Kay went back by the drum kit during the solo and just hung his head. I wish I could find that clip on the internet. They really made some great music, although sometimes I think the drummer needed to dial it back a bit. He overdid it at times.
We saw them in Tampa's Curtis Hixon Hall in 1969. They played "Monster" front to back and I was impressed. A lot of bands back then were just out for the money without any skills. Often they didn't have the technical equipment to pull it off either. Lamar
I remember listening to this in the 70's. The story is similar to my mother's. She is from East Prussia also and had to flee by night on Jan. 23, 1945 from the advancing Russian army. It is a tale filled with the horrors that accompany war. My grandmother, mother and aunt spent the next 2 years in a refuge camp in Copenhagen before finally being reunited with my grandfather in West Germany. At least they made it, many didn't. This is the only song that describes their plight.
Outstanding! I remember owning the LP and playing this over and over. One of their best. What a thematic build and effortless elaboration of the words by the groove. Very rich vertical depth to the music.
@sevenfingers2001 It was YOU, and your peers that tore down that wall and it most certainly was NOT Reagan . Thank you and your loved ones for your sacrifice my friend.
you are all right about this song.Been listening to it since I was a teen,it just gets better.never heard it on the radio though. What a shame so many music lovers will never hear this gem
I went bush walking on my own the other day here in Australia, I have 10,600 songs on my ipod and this song came on - it was a beautiful experience!! How fitting that the song goes for so long. It's so well produced/recorded/mixed. Steppenwolf had a fabulous texture to their music and a killer rhythm section that was so damn great!! Other songs of theirs I love are "Monster", Night Hog", "Who needs ya", "From here to their eventually", "Don't step on the grass Sam", "Corina", - it's just great!
Nothing wrong with Steppenwolf. I think they just needed more good hits to bring them more to the top. STRAIGHT SHOOTIN' WOMAN was a big hit from SLOW FLUX. They had brass in that song. FOR LADIES ONLY was a big song too off that album.
Also, I agree with Lockemeister. I am a drummer, tho more in the groove with Don Brewer, John Bonham, Keith Moon etc. But Jerry Edmonton was so right for Steppenwolf. He did exactly what the song needed! This version of Wolf is my personal favorite. Plus I loved hearing the vocals switch on Foggy Mountain Breakdown, and Who Needs Ya?. I love every Wolf album but this and their first lp. are my favorite. Probably because they're the ones my bro got when I was 5! Great memories. Great post!!!!
This is about his birthplace in northern Europe and how he had to flee the oncoming Soviets as they satiated themselves in an orgy of violence in retribution for Barbarossa.
thanks so much for posting this song. i just heard magic carpet ride on the radio, and decided to try to find this tune. i knew it was steppenwolf 7, but could not remember the title. i am 54 years old. i fell asleep to 'renegade' countless times in my youth.
Great post, damn I've been looking for this one. Steppenwolf - Forever!!!! Long live John Kay!! Thanks again for posting. We'll show this goofy ass Rap/Hip-hop & goofy Techno new wave generation what some soulful music is!!
I agree with the visual. I'm not really focused on that however. I'm just interested in getting Steppenwolf more play time here than they have. A shame such a great band receives so little exposure.
Great song. Unfortunately, this video graphic does not fit this song very well. Maybe a better choice would be the famous 1960's of the East German guard, with weapon, going over barbed wire at a Berlin Check Point.
The song's about the singer's eastern German homeland; first under Hitler, Nazis, ehrmacht, SS, and Gestapho; then under Communists forced occupation and rule, Stazi (spelling?), etc.; and how difficult and dangerous it was for hime to escape through East Germany to the west.
OH and Gun too.

Did this band surface before or after the doors?
Both are original and have very similiar styles.
