Originally P-791 was intended to be the Army's high altitude LEMV spy airship. But they lost the contract to a different airship and now they are repurposing the P-791 as the "SkyTug", a very small cargo airship for the frigid North Canadian wilderness. It would carry 20 tons(like a C-130). It'll fly by 2012. In 2014 they plan to sell the "SkyFreighter" line, 50 tons of payload but still quite miniature for a blimp.
Hi folks, When you watch the final approach and landing you can see a classic example of a dutch roll instability problem, followed by an oscillation between the hoverskirts on the ground. That might have been a large part of the reason why the US DoD awarded the 517 million LEMV contract to Northrop Grumman and Hybrid Air Vehicles from England, who are now building three HAV 304's for the US Army. First flight will be late summer. Regards JB ( 3w hybridairship dott net)
Seriously need these in Astan. Longer term area observation/loiter/recon than predator/reaper, or even satellites, and with larger strike payload, ie hellfires. Also, why not low collateral damage GPS 100 or 200 lb bombs? Less expensive than hellfires for taliban occupied mud hut removal! Would need good EW, stealth fabric, and countermeasures to shoulder SAMs though.
What is max operating height for this vehicle? Can this be used for carrying fuel? What is max operating load? PM me if you prefer. I have ideas on how to get this into US govt quickly...
With that music you would think the thing would be a Transformer or at least rain down some sort of horror. I guess it would be impossible to get funding from the military if it was happy music.
@MokomaSusi but how could someone not see a huge balloon thing over their heads? That would be a weird and obvious way of spying. I think we should just keep using stealth and speed for spying......but it would be really good for hauling cargo. :)
Cool tech - but so fucking hilarious. It looks like to fat guys in tight pants pulling a freaking train on each other. They should have definitely rethought the music. LOL but I hope it helps soldiers in remote parts of Afghanistan.
This thing is a tremendous development. This thing is like an accountant, not real interesting but super important. It can perform many of the same functions as an AWACS (also a snoozer) but stay on station for weeks at a time. While it may look real conspicuous, keep in mind that it operates five miles up in the sky and I am sure using current sensor technology can probably read newspapers fifty miles away.
Just 'cuz it ain't sexy don't mean it ain't useful.
Just as the Lockheed A-12 Blackbird was protected by nothing more than physics (moving at the speed of a bullet at very high altitudes, several hundred missiles fired after it) there is just no bullet that will reach 20 000 feet. Forget RPGs etc., what you need is advanced SAM capabilities and once you deploy this fat blob those have presumably been bombed to bits long before. Weird but interesting
this wnt work they will shoot it down with a surplus soviet rocket it wont even have to explode it will just have to hit it and the momentum will destroy it

OMG WHY?!?!
547 Million to build this? for SURVEILLANCE?
this is just all wrong. Morally wrong.
US is in debt and everyone is suffering from the cuts. That money was needed HERE in the US. Not there in afghanistan. What a waste. What a shame.
