i think I have exactly the same problem, I just recently bought a 97 escort wagon, and the guy said he had recently replaced the fuel pump himself. I filled it with gas today and noticed a smell, and then noticed a gas trail following behind the car. Going to look at the fuel pump tomorrow and see if its the same issue, hopefully its an easy fix
using the old seal is asking for trouble. It was not the new seals fault. I did smash down on the tabs and that has seemed to fix the leaking issue. Also the back seat was fine I did put it back in I just left it out for the leak test prior to refilling the tank. Thanks for the input.
should've used the old seal if it was not broken. You could have also if they are not rust that bad bend them down with a hammer /punch to tighten up the seal.tanks are flammable ,cannot cut ,grind, or weld on them.Or you go BOOM!!! Remember gas vapors are what explodes.
Terry 513 you misread my comment. I said every vehicle needs to have this. And most don't. Dropping your tank to service the pump is a joke.

EVERY VEHICLE with in tank pumps should have an access cover so you don't need to drop the tank. EVERY VEHICLE.
I wonder how many cars have this? I do know Volvo's and Range Rovers do it this way.

Good job. I have the same problem. The hard part is trying to take the fuel pump out of the tank.
