  • In the little mermaid there is "sea foam" the other mermaids that don't well accomplish their deal. They turn in to little brown things so i don't think Disney and Hans is so far off except well the happily ever after, but the details are there! Just not in sequence .

  • I honestly hate the Disney version of the little mermaid...Well, hate is a strong word so I'll say dislike! The original is just Soooooooooooooo much more meaningful, touching, beautiful & sticks with you. Out of all the fairy tales in the world. Hans Little mermaid had the most Impact on me as a child. I learned that You must take resonsibility for your own actions & faults & Always try to do good by others. & if you love someone, Make sure they are happy. Even if you cant ever be apart of it.

  • I like original fairytale or fable endings that tragic or a comedy. I'm mostly into tragedies and bittersweet endings because of the emotion and drama.

  • Have you seen Once on This Island?

  • Wow. That is a really complicated potion. Can you imagine the disclaimer on that label?

  • I would always do the hair thing when I was a kid too(: I even wanted to have long hair that stopped at my hip just like Ariel"s.

  • OMG im actually shocked that people didnt know the story of the origonal little mermaid my mum used to tell it to me as a bedtime story kinda dark but i loved it she kind of changed the ending in her version the little mermaid gets to heaven and can tell the prince that it was her that saved him and they spend eternity in love aww diddums :D Cant wait to read fathomless

  • I have the original little mermaid on vhs...and i was cleaning my room out last week, and i thought about sending it to you...then i realized...

who even has a vhs player anymore? lol.

  • i'm danish, so i grew up on the original Little Mermaid story. Its pretty funny because once i got into Kindergarten, we watched Disney's Little Mermaid one day, and I just thought it was complete and utter crap while all the other little girls were like "Prince Eric is so awesome!" and i was like "what's with the singing lobster..?"

  • WOOT WOOTTT!

ANOTHER BOOK?! im soo excitedd! :D

  • I had no idea people didn't know it wasn't original to Disney. I thought it was fairly common knowledge that Disney reinvents stories. Huh. Color me surprised.

  • Thank you Jackson! First of all I can't wait to read your book, since I've grown up with my dad reading H.C. Andersen for me at the fire place my entire childhood (I'm Danish), so I'm really curious on your new take on it. Thank you, thank you for setting the record straight here in this video. I have an education as an animator, so I for sure love Disney's Little Mermaid as much as the next one, but people should know that there is an entirely different story out there too, just as good.

  • I have a book of old fairy tales. That was one of them. I read it when I was little so I totally can't wait for your new book!

  • i like jumped back when you pulled out the knife xD

  • Wow, I haven't actually read the original Little Mermaid but I'm glad I watched this video. I can't wait for Fathomless!

  • The Little Mermaid was my favorite Disney movie growing up too and it still is to this day! I must have watched it over hundred or more times!

  • I love love love love love your videos! I plan on reading your books soon. I am a (teen) writer and I have been trying to write a book for a few years, now. But every novel I've started, I have gotten bored of by around the 8th chapter (and my chapters aren't quite as long as the norm. Do you have any tips for a teenager writer on writer's block and getting a literary agent or publisher? Or any tips at all, really? I read my youtube email, so..... yeah. You are amazing. Thanks.

  • I only recently discovered that people think Disney wrote it originally too, so annoying. Although until now I didn't know the original ending (or epilogue ending) myself. The book I had said she jumped into the water and turned back into a mermaid.Damn censorship! Have you ever read The Red Shoes by Hans Christian Anderson? I appreciate it now but God that scarred me as a child.

  • Can't wait to see how Fathomless ends up! (And I like the original better than the Disney version)

  • Jackson! You are my hero! I've had the same problem with people not knowing the original existed since I read the original story when I was like... eleven. I LOVED it! I read it at least once a year till I was like sixteen. And it always bothered me when people said they loved the Little Mermaid and then didn't know the original story. X)

  • I think I like the Disney version better. It's much happier.

  • That is actually a pretty epic story.

  • -_- ...this is why I don't like Disney...

I have to say that while I knew it wasn't originally a Disney tale, I had never actually heard the original, so thank you for sharing it! :D I think I'll go find some more of Anderson's fairy tales to read.

*feels very deprived of Anderson's fairy tales* xD

  • haha i used to do that as a kid too. my mom also has some embarassing videos of me singing the part of your world song with a little too much innocent enthusiasm :P

  • Even as a kid, I loved the depressing ending of the original Little Mermaid (before the Daughters of the Air part, which seemed too moralistic to me). I've read that Andersen had a rather sad love life, which could help explain the melancholic tone of so many of his stories.

  • Great video!!!

...also, I did that bursting-out-of-the-swimming-pool thing when I was little too. Glad I wasn't the only one.

  • You are an awesome story-teller. It will be great if you did the original for other story!!

PS. I want to see u retelling the the Snow Queen ( or Ice Queen) :-)

  • I like the chef in the movie, his jaunty "heh heh heh HOH HOH HOH" line makes me laugh every time. good times. especially since I bet no one has a clue what I'm talking about...

  • Little Mermaid has always been my favorite of the fairy tales. And I think in part because it wasnt all chocolate and roses! But I think the Disney version balances out the original version nicely :-)

  • You forgot the part of the ending where the mermaid is told that for every time a child cries while she's a daughter of the air, a year is added to her thousand years, but every time a child laughs, a day is taken off her sentence. :-/ It sucks.

  • When I was a kid, I had this floral umbrella. I used to spin it around me dramatically and crouch down like Mulan and the other ladies do in that one scene before the matchmaker. I think we had similar levels of coolness as kids.

  • @ArtemisRampant I used to do the same thing! I would also use fans to cover up all of my face except my eyes like in that scene. And I would do the jumping out of the pool hair flip thing. :P

  • I read the original version in the first grade...I spent the entire evening I finished it ranting about how much I hated the human princess.

    And then, bam, perspective.

  • I love the Disney version, and I knew about the original version prior to seeing the Disney version. I just like happily ever after.

  • I love the disney movie, but I like that the ending isn't happy. Also, I always would renact the last scene where she walks out of the water all awesome like. Yeahh. Haha.

  • This was the version I grew up on... That probably explains a lot :P

  • I did the jumping out of pool thing, too, to try to be like Ariel :D

  • the only bad thing about loving unrequited love is it doesnt love you back

  • I spent the majority of my childhood doing that thing with my hair too. (i kinda still do)

I knew that the Disney version wasn't the original, but I still like the Disney version.

  • The only thing that disappoints me more than people thinking The Little Mermaid is a Disney original is people thinking The Jungle Book is a Disney original. Rudyard Kipling is rolling in his grave. (And Kaa is not a villain! He's actually pretty badass.)

On another note, I tried to make my own Ariel bangs as a kid, too. My mom said she could do it for me. Her idea was poofy lump over my forehead with a barrette. XD Disney gave me unrealistic expectations about hair!

  • I WAAAY prefer your telling of this story to Hans Christian Anderson's (especially the knife wielding part).

  • Since Fathomless got picked up, Jackson, does that mean your going to do a retelling of The Snow Queen?? I hope you do, 'cus that would be really fun & interesting!

  • For your next circus skill you learn you should try knife throwing

  • Original fairytales are so depressing. Modern fairytales are about dreaming, happy endings, and making the impossible happen. Old fairytales are dark, twisted, and there is never a happy ending.

  • @TheBookVlogger That's not true! Lots of them have a happy ending-- Cinderella, for example. It's just getting to that happy ending wasn't quite as bippity boppity.

  • @JacksonAPearce Really? I've never read the original Cinderella. I guess I'll just have to check that one out. Oh, wait a second I recall you saying at a livestream that the evil step sisters cut off parts of their feet to fit into the glass slipper. That's pretty damn messed up lol.

  • @JacksonAPearce i like the original Cinderella a lot more then Disney's!

  • H.C. Andersen is from Denmark... Like me... Ouh Yir xD

  • I'm really happy you did this, and I can't wait for you next book! It's always weird when people don't know that this wasn't a Disney original! And you told it so well. <333 Thanks you! :]

  • i love this video :) finally, the truth of the little mermaid!

  • When I meet someone that knows this story, they say they "love" the Brothers Grimm. It's quite depressing because then you know they've been lying this whole time and are just going on with the story you're telling them.

  • Holy crap, I never knew about the knife bit. That's pretty awesome.

  • Can't wait for your book!!!!

  • Sometimes I wonder how long you've spent looking at your book cover for Sisters Red. I know how much I've looked at it and it's not even my book! For some reason I just never get tired of it...

  • Many Twilight fans are unaware that there even ARE Twilight books, or believe the books were written AFTER the movies. We're doomed.

  • I totally can't wait for your book!!

  • I used to do that in the pool also :P

  • @MissWolvesandRoses Me too! And I also used to do "lifts" like the final one in Dirty Dancing off the back of the family room couch. See--none of us are as uniquely weird as we think we are!

  • @1Jeneva @annikasunshine You guys awesome :)

  • @MissWolvesandRoses That makes three of us x)

  • As a kid I hated the original story because she didn't get the prince in the end, but the idea of there not always being a happy ending is really refreshing.

  • really ive never met someone who thought those movies where original Disney stories

  • WOAH WOAH WOAH. Jackson with knife! -RUNS AWAY-

  • Comment removed

  • Beastly (book) totally goes into detail with this, subtly.

  • I never saw the full disney version. it allways put me to sleep. I saw the Hans Christian anderson one first on a video. It was an anime one made in like th 70's or something. and despite being a cartoon. the mermaids were topless. I was allways drawn to that one because i thought the seafoam was soo pretty. and I guess I kept watching it hoping that it would be a happy ending next time. needless to say. I was a derranged child.

  • wow.... that version seems way more cool.

  • I read the original a few months ago!! I really love proper, old fairytales!!! I feel cool now :D

  • Wow, never knew the original tale. I like it better. Jackson, you never cease to make me smile and laugh. Plus you're very educational. The next book I buy will definitely be Sisters Red. :)

  • While you were creeping with the knife, I thought someone was, most likely, looking in your window and calling the police.

  • I love this video!

  • I wasn't so sure about a Little Mermaid retelling, but I TOTALLY am now. That's an amazing story!

  • My parents read the original story to my sister and I when we were kids and we loved it more than the disney movie.

  • I wish there were more movies that stayed close to the fairy tale's original story. Although, the majority of those would probably be M rated movies.

  • I had no idea that people assumed it was an original Disney tale! Thank you so much for posting this and getting the original tale some deserved recognition.

  • AHHHHH! I'm sure that I've read The Little Mermaid at some point (being from a Russian family means that I was exposed to the original versions, or at least less-adapted non-Disney versions, of most fairy tales), but it was a long time ago, and...geez, that's just so sad.

  • @moscowmasha

You should totally make an effort to check out Astrid Lindgren (especially Karlsson-on-the-Roof, a book about a little man with a propeller on his back) and Gianni Rodari (Gelsomino in the Country of Liars), as well as the original version of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, if you haven't already - these are books that largely didn't make it into the American market, but are very worth reading. Also, look up Russian cartoon Cheburashka and the Russian version of Winnie the Pooh!

  • @HC90125 oh, well I'm always happy to amuse! [Especially when it involves doctor who related humor] ~:]

  • Best. Video. Worth the wait. Although I already knew the original story, Im glad you're letting people in on the Disney-isn't-that-original secret. And Congrats on your book! Can't wait to read it!

  • After I learned about the original little mermaid story I bought this beautiful book of Hans Christian Anderson fairytales just to read it. XD Seriously, it's a gorgeous book.

  • I just finished watching now, and lololollolol at you creeping up with the knife!!

  • Disney's version is one of my favorite disney movies but I loved the original! I will definitely look it up, I want to read it :P

Oh and a question, why did you move the videos to the kitchen? I'm not complaining, I just miss staring at you bookshelves *.*

  • this is really werid, but i think you answered my question. like a few hours ago i was trying to figure out the original tale of little mermaid and when i saw your video, i freaked! lolz. thanks for reading my mind!

  • Very interesting video, by the way :)

  • Ah! I was a bit sad with what Disney did with the princess movies. I wonder if there is going to be a movie adaptation that is really close to the original tale. (No pun intended.)

  • You should do a video of "51 things found in your house" or something like that. I think it would be cool :)

  • Wow, just finished watching day 33, looked up classes for aerial silks, and came back and day 24 was up! I'm happy! haha

  • @HC90125 i was actually. yours was posted 5 minuets ago and my comment was posted four minuets ago. thus, i was first. sorry.

  • @Taylerbearr i don't know if you don't understand..or..um...what? actually the time posted is the time that has elapsed since the posting of the comment; and you said yourself that yours was posted 4 minutes ago and hers (his) was posted 5 minutes ago. so yeah, HC90125, was first; unless you have a Tardis and plan to fully take whats yours! O_o LOL, jk-it doesn't matter, in all honesty-just want you to know so no one rude corrects you (rudely) :]

  • LOL, I know right? The original stories are always crappy and then Disney goes and glorifies it *ahem* musical number. I always read the Grimm first and then just pointed out the differences in the Disney

ones in a flat voice. such a messed up childhood :)

  • i feel like i always learn something from you.
