In the little mermaid there is "sea foam" the other mermaids that don't well accomplish their deal. They turn in to little brown things so i don't think Disney and Hans is so far off except well the happily ever after, but the details are there! Just not in sequence .
I honestly hate the Disney version of the little mermaid...Well, hate is a strong word so I'll say dislike! The original is just Soooooooooooooo much more meaningful, touching, beautiful & sticks with you. Out of all the fairy tales in the world. Hans Little mermaid had the most Impact on me as a child. I learned that You must take resonsibility for your own actions & faults & Always try to do good by others. & if you love someone, Make sure they are happy. Even if you cant ever be apart of it.
I like original fairytale or fable endings that tragic or a comedy. I'm mostly into tragedies and bittersweet endings because of the emotion and drama.
OMG im actually shocked that people didnt know the story of the origonal little mermaid my mum used to tell it to me as a bedtime story kinda dark but i loved it she kind of changed the ending in her version the little mermaid gets to heaven and can tell the prince that it was her that saved him and they spend eternity in love aww diddums :D Cant wait to read fathomless
i'm danish, so i grew up on the original Little Mermaid story. Its pretty funny because once i got into Kindergarten, we watched Disney's Little Mermaid one day, and I just thought it was complete and utter crap while all the other little girls were like "Prince Eric is so awesome!" and i was like "what's with the singing lobster..?"
I had no idea people didn't know it wasn't original to Disney. I thought it was fairly common knowledge that Disney reinvents stories. Huh. Color me surprised.
Thank you Jackson! First of all I can't wait to read your book, since I've grown up with my dad reading H.C. Andersen for me at the fire place my entire childhood (I'm Danish), so I'm really curious on your new take on it. Thank you, thank you for setting the record straight here in this video. I have an education as an animator, so I for sure love Disney's Little Mermaid as much as the next one, but people should know that there is an entirely different story out there too, just as good.
I love love love love love your videos! I plan on reading your books soon. I am a (teen) writer and I have been trying to write a book for a few years, now. But every novel I've started, I have gotten bored of by around the 8th chapter (and my chapters aren't quite as long as the norm. Do you have any tips for a teenager writer on writer's block and getting a literary agent or publisher? Or any tips at all, really? I read my youtube email, so..... yeah. You are amazing. Thanks.
I only recently discovered that people think Disney wrote it originally too, so annoying. Although until now I didn't know the original ending (or epilogue ending) myself. The book I had said she jumped into the water and turned back into a mermaid.Damn censorship! Have you ever read The Red Shoes by Hans Christian Anderson? I appreciate it now but God that scarred me as a child.
Jackson! You are my hero! I've had the same problem with people not knowing the original existed since I read the original story when I was like... eleven. I LOVED it! I read it at least once a year till I was like sixteen. And it always bothered me when people said they loved the Little Mermaid and then didn't know the original story. X)
I have to say that while I knew it wasn't originally a Disney tale, I had never actually heard the original, so thank you for sharing it! :D I think I'll go find some more of Anderson's fairy tales to read.
*feels very deprived of Anderson's fairy tales* xD
haha i used to do that as a kid too. my mom also has some embarassing videos of me singing the part of your world song with a little too much innocent enthusiasm :P
Even as a kid, I loved the depressing ending of the original Little Mermaid (before the Daughters of the Air part, which seemed too moralistic to me). I've read that Andersen had a rather sad love life, which could help explain the melancholic tone of so many of his stories.
I like the chef in the movie, his jaunty "heh heh heh HOH HOH HOH" line makes me laugh every time. good times. especially since I bet no one has a clue what I'm talking about...
Little Mermaid has always been my favorite of the fairy tales. And I think in part because it wasnt all chocolate and roses! But I think the Disney version balances out the original version nicely :-)
You forgot the part of the ending where the mermaid is told that for every time a child cries while she's a daughter of the air, a year is added to her thousand years, but every time a child laughs, a day is taken off her sentence. :-/ It sucks.
When I was a kid, I had this floral umbrella. I used to spin it around me dramatically and crouch down like Mulan and the other ladies do in that one scene before the matchmaker. I think we had similar levels of coolness as kids.
@ArtemisRampant I used to do the same thing! I would also use fans to cover up all of my face except my eyes like in that scene. And I would do the jumping out of the pool hair flip thing. :P
I love the disney movie, but I like that the ending isn't happy. Also, I always would renact the last scene where she walks out of the water all awesome like. Yeahh. Haha.
The only thing that disappoints me more than people thinking The Little Mermaid is a Disney original is people thinking The Jungle Book is a Disney original. Rudyard Kipling is rolling in his grave. (And Kaa is not a villain! He's actually pretty badass.)
On another note, I tried to make my own Ariel bangs as a kid, too. My mom said she could do it for me. Her idea was poofy lump over my forehead with a barrette. XD Disney gave me unrealistic expectations about hair!
Since Fathomless got picked up, Jackson, does that mean your going to do a retelling of The Snow Queen?? I hope you do, 'cus that would be really fun & interesting!
Original fairytales are so depressing. Modern fairytales are about dreaming, happy endings, and making the impossible happen. Old fairytales are dark, twisted, and there is never a happy ending.
@TheBookVlogger That's not true! Lots of them have a happy ending-- Cinderella, for example. It's just getting to that happy ending wasn't quite as bippity boppity.
@JacksonAPearce Really? I've never read the original Cinderella. I guess I'll just have to check that one out. Oh, wait a second I recall you saying at a livestream that the evil step sisters cut off parts of their feet to fit into the glass slipper. That's pretty damn messed up lol.
I'm really happy you did this, and I can't wait for you next book! It's always weird when people don't know that this wasn't a Disney original! And you told it so well. <333 Thanks you! :]
When I meet someone that knows this story, they say they "love" the Brothers Grimm. It's quite depressing because then you know they've been lying this whole time and are just going on with the story you're telling them.
Sometimes I wonder how long you've spent looking at your book cover for Sisters Red. I know how much I've looked at it and it's not even my book! For some reason I just never get tired of it...
@MissWolvesandRoses Me too! And I also used to do "lifts" like the final one in Dirty Dancing off the back of the family room couch. See--none of us are as uniquely weird as we think we are!
As a kid I hated the original story because she didn't get the prince in the end, but the idea of there not always being a happy ending is really refreshing.
I never saw the full disney version. it allways put me to sleep. I saw the Hans Christian anderson one first on a video. It was an anime one made in like th 70's or something. and despite being a cartoon. the mermaids were topless. I was allways drawn to that one because i thought the seafoam was soo pretty. and I guess I kept watching it hoping that it would be a happy ending next time. needless to say. I was a derranged child.
Wow, never knew the original tale. I like it better. Jackson, you never cease to make me smile and laugh. Plus you're very educational. The next book I buy will definitely be Sisters Red. :)
