  • U spelled vital wrong 2: 48 .

  • "down-right jump"

but in the video you do an air shield.

  • If you want to play Brawl, but with Melee physics, then just play Project M.

  • When you WaveDash grab, do you use Z or R/L + A? Which is simpler and faster do you think in your honest opinion?

  • @DonkeySlayer1 In my honest opinion it would just be Z

  • @KillerH82lose haha fair enough

  • How u unlock luigi ?

  • Lol use to do this all the time but I never knew it was actually hard. Plus I never knew there were tournaments for this. I couldve been at evo

  • I view this the same as snaking in mario kart...

  • @Kaney And how is that? Easy to learn, hard to master? Making the game more fun to play? Adding tons of depth and replay value to the game?

  • @Jonassoe In your opinion it might be adding depth to gameplay but its merely really exploiting the mechanics of the game play. Like snaking was in mario Kart. Stuff like this happens all the time

  • @Kaney So if wavedashing were intentional, it would add depth to the game, but since it isn't, it adds no depth? What's the difference?

  • @Jonassoe I never said whether or not it does (upto opinion). What I'm saying is it wasn't originally intended to do this. Do you really think sliding to your opponent while shielding was in their intentions? Its like in halo when you could jump higher if you jump then duck then released or in mariokart where if you keep skid boasting you can go much faster (snaking). You could argue that these add depth, but they underestimated the potential of how the mechanics are exploited is all I'm saying.

  • @Kaney What I'm saying is that it does not matter whether or not it was intended on the developers' part. For one thing, we can't really know for sure what they intended, but more importantly, the game has ceased development and has been released, so the developers no longer have any say in how it's supposed to be played.

It's not a matter of opinion whether wavedashing adds depth. It adds so many options and tactics to the game that it's just incorrect to say it doesn't make the game deeper.

  • @Jonassoe No dude you can mostly tell what was and wasn't intended. You can't be serious if you really think sliding while using the shield or charging for a smash attack was in tended.

Of course developers can have a say about how its supposed to be played, they just can't do anything about it.

You just have opposing opinions about it being in depth, there not wrong, nin didn't like it either so it was took out. Some argued that snaking added depth to mario kart. To me it was just cheap.

  • @Kaney How does "more things you have to learn in order to keep up with good players" not equal depth?

And my point about the developers was that they can't do anything about it, so their opinion doesn't matter.

And yes, there is always doubt as to which techniques in a game are intended and which techniques aren't. For instance, Sakurai has said that his team discovered WD'ing during Melee's development, but decided to keep it in (I can try to find a source if you'd like me to).

  • @Jonassoe cause their opinion matters. It was taken out in brawl, now people complain like someone stole their candy (not saying you are)

About your last comment. I do have something to say about it but I'd rather you find the source so I can give a better reply.

Either way this has strengthened my comparison to snaking (which is technically the main point I'm raising).

  • @Kaney Here is the source:

    Nintendo Power May issue 2008:

Nintendo Power: This is one that a lot of hardcore Smash Bros. fans have long wondered about. Was the ablility to "Wavedash" in Melee intentional or a glitch?

Sakurai: Of course, we noticed that you could do that during the development period. With Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it wasn't a matter of, "OK, do we leave it in or do we take it out?"

It's not the whole thing (Youtube restriction) but you can Google the rest.

  • @Jonassoe interesting. So it seems it might not have been intended but when they noticed it they were like...ok w/e.

don't know why this reply wasn't in my messages

  • @Kaney Concerning the developer's opinion, it only matters during the development of the next game. I Capcom decided to take out combos in Street Fighter V, it's his call to make (although it would be stupid as hell for him to do such), but the existing Street Fighter community is still going to use combos in the previous Street Fighter games. Same with Wavedashing in Melee and snaking in MKDS.

  • @Jonassoe so we technically we agree (I think)

  • @Kaney I guess. We probably still disagree on whether it's "legitimate" to use in a match.

  • @Jonassoe true. I'd only use it if others who I'm playing against used it (like snaking), but I'd prefer not to because to me it feels out of place like it wasn't supposed to be there but I guess that's just me. Thats why I'd rather play brawl. Only thing is, its slower, I HATE the tripping and fox was powered down.

  • In regards to Melee vs. Brawl, i'd like to note that being able to air dodge more than once is pretty cool.

  • luigi's wave dash into smash attack looks retarded XD

  • I thought this was supposed to be impossible in Brawl, unless you hack? Because I can easily do it in Brawl.

  • @tamiefraine dude if you can do this then you should aim for EVO tournament cuz you would be the first to do that in Brawl

  • Why always Luigi? You should do it on Marth. Looks coolest when he does it.

  • dumb...

  • Huh, I just came back to melee from... many years of not playing. I was never really interested in the wavedashing and SHFFLs and stuff, I figured it wouldnt help my young link game that much, figuring he was fast enough already. Been practicing, gonna see what I come up with. Thanks for the video though!

  • people thing using the c-stick is for noobs!?

i thought everyone used the c-stick for quicker attacks ._.

  • Anyone else was brought here by the GameFAQs Top 10?

  • SPAM

  • Brawl vs melee doesnt matter neither of them are fighting games

  • @legendofsource Did you look up this video JUST to insult the series?

  • @MadMunky20k no, i actually like brawl, i just looked at the discussions and realised how pathetic everyone arguing here is. banned at evo for a reason.

  • @legendofsource I hate the arguments as well. But I stand by the fact that Smash Bros, however unorthodox, is a fighting game through and through.

  • @legendofsource Then what is Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and games of that type?

  • @anythingmasterz Real fighting games excluding mk mk is shit tier fighting games.

  • @legendofsource Stop trolling :)

  • @legendofsource of course its a fgighting game

  • I really thought wavedashing was something above my level of skill, but I've like always been doing this, why didn't I look up a video of it earlier XD

  • @JonoScarbridge

It's quite easy if you get the hang of it. It has really neat tricks and mindgames up to it, like wavelanding after spawning, wavedashing multiple platforms with airjumps and wavelanding.

  • Seamus sent me :)

  • @Epicyx Same

  • i tryed with bowser , and it serves (for accelerate Speed) thanks man

  • Thanks a lot, this was very helpful!

  • got wave dashing down in Five minutes! Yes! time to conquer everyone!

  • if you wanna practice this without having to use luigi just go to fourside with a character of your choice and try it on the spaceship your welcome

  • @xXMethodKidXx lol no you dont. mango and pp dont even use c stick for aerials. shit hungrybox uses Z

  • @SparkSSBM if you're better with the c-stick you should use it

  • @indertorte i know. he said it was necessary to shffl though and its not.

  • @SparkSSBM oh okay, sorry

  • Wavedashiing isn't easy. . .but I'll try it.

  • "Wavedashing into a grad is also very simple. All you have to do to pull it off is to... 1. Wavedash 2. Grab." Are you fucking serious?

  • lol game wars ftl

  • I must say, I did some very firm, solid air humps to this guitar and drum beat. Very satisfying, if I do say so myself.

  • Wait...this is wavedashing? ...and here I thought it was some godly technique.

  • @Socrates271 why it is.

    see waveshining

  • @Socrates271 all you gotta do is learn the characters moves and the best way to use them and youre good wavedashing not needed thats what brawl is all about no need to make things even more complicated its this is smash bros not some overly complex fighting game its easy to learn but difficult to master hell i never needed wave dashing and didnt even know about it until brawl came out yet I still kick ass

  • @mustymuf well if you cant mini jump -> l-cancel then youd be at a massive disadvantage. wavedashing is less important.

  • Personally, I find it very funny and ironic that some people think randomly exploding items are fair and balanced, yet merely sliding across the floor (wavedashing) is somehow broken and unfair.

  • @kngwa43 considering this is super smash bros and not street fighter items and explosions better be fair, I also dont care for wave dashing and never needed or used it although it does seem kinda cheap that you can shield and move at once but its not that big a deal anyways for me my strategy has always been about my approach to the opponent and what moves to use given my distance I dont need glitches but Im not hating either way Luigi feels like a wave dasher by default anyway

  • Lol at fail attempt 2 shield wavedash

  • Comment removed

  • I just realized that ever since brawl came out, melee players couldnt find any glitches to win. So they went back to melee where they have their glitches for winning

  • @MikeXel1 1. Sakurai himself even said on Nintendo magazine that they knew about wavedashing before the game even came out, making it not a glitch.

    2. Wavedashing isn't even broken at all. It actually helps BALANCE the game, not the opposite. It gives weaker characters like Mewtwo a chance to compete. (just look up Taj's Mewtwo)

    3. Brawl actually has MORE glitches than Melee, and is even unbalanced thanks to that and Metaknight.

    4. Don't get mad at so called "touneyfags" just cus you suck.

  • OK

  • I can't believe a bunch of tourneyfag dickheads took something so innocent as Super Smash Brothers and turned in as competitive as Marvel Vs Capcom or Street Fighter. Glitches do not make you a skilled player. It just means you're that much of a bigger loser. This isn't aimed at the author or anyone inparticular. Just saying that tourneyfags need to stay out of my childhood and find some other game to get a boner from.

  • @BenvolioHarpas Actually... wavedashing isn't a glitch, an exploit, or anything like that. It's built into the physics engine, the creators of Melee were perfectly aware of its existence. The only thing they didn't predict was how it can be used, and that, of course, is up to the ingenuity of the player. :3

Personally, I can't wavedash. At all. And it would help me so much. But oh well.

  • @Halofire9 It's still obviously not how they intended for it to be used.

  • @Halofire9 could you tell me where you heard / read that the creators of Melee were aware of wavedashing? Not calling it into question, just very curious.

  • @bonehouse87 "Contrary to the common belief that it is a glitch, Wavedash is actually a physics exploit because while sliding from an airdodge is an intended part of the physics engine, the uses found for it weren't intended. The competitive community has thoroughly explored the applications of wavedashing in a match setting and its widely varying uses in modern tournament situations are clearly beyond what was possibly intended during development."

  • @bonehouse87 From the Smash Bros Wiki.

  • @Halofire9 you'd need a reliable source

  • @BenvolioHarpas THEY ARE NOT INVADING YOUR CHILDHOOD.

they dont have like ninjas that stalk you and force you to do wavedashs. if you dont want the game to be competitive, then play your playstyle, dont go to tournaments and only play against, how you would put it, casualfags. just learn to ignore things, noone's rubbing their wd down your throat. and if they do, try beat em with spamming links upb.

also: i wanna see you doing wd's, lets see how it takes skill

  • @BenvolioHarpas Marvel vs Capcom actually has WAY more glitches than any Smash game, and WAY more imbalanced too because of infinites. Your just a typical scrub, blaming the game and its "glitches" instead on blaming yourself for the fact that you suck at the game and don't feel like learning how to get better. Neither of the games glitches make them unfair act all. It actually takes skill to put them in good use. People who complain about glitches are just bad gamers and don't want to admit it.

  • Wow. This video helped a lot. Thanks for the upload!

  • Addicting*

  • Og smash was the best simple yet assisting the new ones just seem to be filled more and more with useless shit you dont really need

  • 2:02 to 2:05 made me laugh.

  • i think i understand wavedashing now im gonna try it

  • reported for CP

  • ssbm is gay

  • Ugh I can do it but I keep shielding at the end.

  • i tried 10 times and i can do it, but with few mistakes. But not the super 1

  • Wavedashing is freaking hard! I've tried 5,000,000 freaking times, I can not do it!!!!!!!

  • @MrMamaMario heres a tip. hold down ur control stick and pres x and then l back and forth *hold control stick in the down right or down left then spam X L X L) =D thats how i mindgame f smash and shinewave (rofl

  • @szion72 I'm trying it right now, I can do it, but I can't wavedash to save my life

  • shity glitch

  • @Rokomorro0A it is not glitch...

  • If someone has a problem with Brawl being so floaty, just change the characters to Heavy. Voila!

It may not be the exact same feel as Melee, but get over it. Brawl's a pretty damn good game.

  • Melée>Brawl.

Anyone who prefers brawl is between the ages of 4-12.

That's fine, but melée is still the best fighting game ever made.

Brawl is average, and was made for little kids.

  • @M00sedog00 Got that right! See according to that post Even 3 year olds play Melee!

  • @M00sedog00 I agree with you, but I'm 12 and I think Melee is better

  • @M00sedog00

its so good to be much older than u, making ur post so wrong.

  • @lylatfox4 In every fact, there are a few exceptions. Obviously, you suffer from a mental illness that makes you act like someone between the ages of 4-14. Thus making you an exception. The post still stands correct. Brawl is for noobs who can't play real fighting games... Melee has and forever will be one of the greatest fighting games eva! Any brawl player could be beaten by a lvl 4 melee cpu easily anyway...

  • @egomaniac654

excuse me ive been playing smash bro. since the very 1st game, there probably no other game in this world that has more playtime than smash bro. melee in my gaming days, melee was said by the very creator that it was incomplete and rushed which lead to those glitches and bugs that you say make melee more "competitive" which is rly just breaking the laws of the game to do something more effectively, instead of adjusting to that player's playstyle, and using it to its fullest

  • @lylatfox4 I to have played the games since the beginning. But glitches or no, my point is that brawl, compared to melee, was purposely slowed down to be an aerial fest of sluggish fighting and one move combos. The strategies in Brawl are so simple a 4 year old could play it. THAT is what I am trying to say. The crowd Brawl was focused on was little kids and 'family' much like the entire Wii. The competitive style of Melee has been put to shame in one of the slowest paced fighting games to date.

  • @egomaniac654

brawl made be slowed down but none the less addicting, like i said i played brawl the most out of any game out there, but i was able to make the transition with ease, the characters might not work the exact sameway, but thats whn u make up more strategies to adjust to it. brawl was pretty much made to make us core fans jizz out our pants with all nintendo's hardcore gaming and a pro brawler can beat a casual like nothing, i know, i played my ex who is casual last week and

  • @lylatfox4 "Nintendo's hardcore gaming". Funny joke. Also, melee is by FAR better than brawl. I cannot express in words how strongly I believe this.

  • @egomaniac654

and i wasent even trying to win, brawl has always been simple and made to be played by anybody since the 1st one, tht was the idea to begin with.

  • @egomaniac654 I agree with you 100%. Brawl was most definately dumbed down from melee's standards. What these guys fail to realize that 100% of of the game's potential is being used when people use tricks like wavedashing to improve the game, to add a level of depth that wasn't present before.

What they don't realize is that in the earliest fighting games, combos themselves were the result of little glitches, that were adapted into gameplay, since they deepened the gameplay greatly.

  • @Grahamx227 wow... i didnt even know about that last paragraph... lol happy to see that i'm not the only real hardcore smash player left out there! But you helped to prove my point perfectly. I agree, it isn't cheating the game when you exploit wavedashing and other strategies. It's just adding another layer of difficulty ontop of the game, for the more hardcore players that want a challenge.

  • @egomaniac654 The way I personally see it, I can't say Melee or Brawl is better than the other. It all relies upon personal taste. Melee is better for those who like the fast-paced, action oriented, combo-filled style of fighting game. Brawl, on the other hand, is slower, but made more towards the elements of strategy and outsmarting your opponent, rather than just being able to react faster than them.

  • @WritersBlah This makes Brawl a more balanced game that allows more people who lack the skills to perform well in Melee still compete in a competitive setting. That doesn't mean Brawl is better however.

  • @lylatfox4 Brawl has more glitches and bugs than Melee, its a proven fact. And Sakurai said that it was actually Brawl that was thrown together at the last minute, not Melee. He even also said recently that he intentionally dumb down Brawl to make it more accessible because he thought Melee was "too hard" for some people.

Oh, and using glitches isn't "breaking the laws of the game"

  • @kngwa43 I'm pretty sure he never said it was "thrown together at the last minute". Can we get a source on this? Because I"m fairly certain that "more than a year in development" is longer that "last minute".

  • @kngwa43 I'm pretty sure he never said it was "thrown together at the last minute". Can we get a source on this? Because I"m fairly certain that "more than a year in development" is longer that "last minute".

  • @egomaniac654

potential, u use glitches to make the character do whats its not suppose to do. in short you wont play brawl good because u dont know how to use a character properly. So u shun it, even though the developers put their heart and soul into brawl, almost no fighting game out there even has as much content as brawl does and you demeaning it like this by saying one is so much better than the other only insults them

  • ...Never found a time when this was useful. Ever...

Don't see what's so special about it, and I hate everyone who whines about it not being in Brawl so they have to mod their damn Wii, get that stupid Homebrew Channel which I'm never getting, and play Brawl+ or something so they can have their oh-so-darling wavedashing back... As well as a few other pointless edits.

  • @MacWii

Yes. I am a purist, so fuck off.

I'll comment wherever the hell I want.

  • SSB64 FTW

  • This is pretty cool, I like Brawl a lot moar though.

  • Tip: Easiest to wavedash with Luigi

  • Hello fellow Melee players.

We can all agree melee is fun because of the fast gameplay, and incredible depth. Due to gaming developers beating the shit out of the learning curve of regular games (a good example of this would be brawl) so that a meer child could be highly skilled at them, that now a days games require no REAL SKILL. Games like Melee, that require ACTUAL talent only comes once in a lifetime. But that is not the case, there is another.

  • @resiLe

I feel that Melee is much more fun than Brawl. When I first sat down and played Brawl, I was terribly disappointed. I hated the game, but I felt like I had to conquer it. I couldn't put down the controller because it gave me this false sense of hope that I was missing something. I wanted to get as good as I was in Melee, sort of transfer my skills. But little did I know that Super Smash Bros. Brawl wasn't the same Smash Bros. that I loved and cherished for years. It was a nightmare.

  • Brawl sucks.

  • @tvdave94 enlighten us why do you think Brawl sucks and no no hit stun shit

  • @Mattrules64 Well, the wi-fi sucks, and it dosen't have that good fast action melee/64 has. Nintendo also left out a lot of good characters in place of characters with a ton of varibales to learn thrown at us >_>. And now it is almost impossible for European players (like myself) to get meele/64, they only have brawl.

  • @NessPKThunder I still have Melee but I prefer Brawl because

    1. it's more insane (I.E Final Smashes)

    2. Removal or changes to movesets of clone characters (although I rather have Roy instead of ugh Diddy Kong)

    3. lighter tone added silliness Melee's tone was a too serious for my liking also am I the only one bothered by Bowser's Koopa Claw attack?

    4. better Adventure mode

    5. Link recovers a bit faster from his down air

you may think these reasons are crap but these are my own opinions

  • @NessPKThunder also I still think Melee is a great game oh and I'm european too

  • @Mattrules64

well weight class is practically irrelevant mainly cuz the developer made all the characters floaty. Theres and auto ledge grab. basically you can be marth and several pixels away from the ledge but still grab it. Because of this feature it nerfs all characters that have a tether recovery capability. Mind games are still in brawl but not as prevelant as melee. The brawl atk are extremely predictable.

  • @Mattrules64

There's no L-cancel (there is no such thing as auto cancel as still lag in recovery from an aero attack). Take ike for am example, he lags out like crazy from his air attacks. The developers nerfed most of the characters in an act to balance them out.

  • lol tourneyfags

  • @schlippy123 lol n00b

  • @emla001 lol virgin

  • This video sure got popular. I haven't used this account in forever.

  • Super Serious Bros Melee.

  • Thanks for the info sir

  • Very informative video! Thanks alot, sir!

  • There is an easy method inputting the correct sequence, but I heard it's considered a n00bs method and is seriously frowned at by pros, so I won't post it. (Hint: Try holding down-forward and using the x and or y button to short hop.)

  • Why make harder on yourself? it's pretty stupid to make an easy job harder.

  • Yeah, but some people think it doesn't show skill. I would still use the easy method, however: Hold down+the direction you want to travel, then alternate between tapping the X and L buttons. (or any other combination of X or Y and L or R, it doesn't matter.)

  • " I would still use the easy method, however:"

thanks for that! managed to get my wavedash on! :P

  • hey the guy who made this u didn't say how to wave dash

  • it was the VERY FIRST THING he taught

  • i love how he looks like hes hardcore dancing to the music

  • Super Smash Bros. are the best games ever made

  • @trizzledizzle16 actually they are second best, best is Halo =D

  • Uh... not everyone likes halo.

  • @40KEndgame what about MW2?

  • Nope. I'm sure those are popular games, but not everyone likes them.

  • When I wavedash as most characters, it lasts like half a second and then stops. Is this normal, or am I screwing something up?

  • It's normal. Luigi just slides a lot.

  • I love Fox's reflectordash... Niiiiiiiiice, he's the best/cheapest wavedasher ever! ILY FOX!!!

  • Nice

  • what's this song?

  • Read the fucking description...

  • luigi is so easy too wave dash gandorf and young link are hard

  • I cant believ some people can pull this off by instinct, seems so hard.

  • i had no clue what wavedashing was till i saw this vid. i have been doing that 4ever

  • Nice vid, nice tutorial, nice musix <3

  • ty you can platformdash to edgehogdash

i ust lrarned a new thing from you :o

  • MELEE killer end of story -_- it just has a better feel... period

  • It's ppl like Haru that make competative players look like assholes : \

  • Not at all. It's people like LordKombox that make COMPETITIVE players look like idiots.

Haru is right, you can't attempt to make a game into something its not and expect full success. Besides, Melee is still faster paced and requires more skill/tactics/thinking etc...

  • Melee > Brawl

    Melee > Brawl+

    Competitive > Casual

Just the facts. But I mean Brawl+ is great. You just can't wavedash. Or L-Cancel if I'm mistaken.

  • Actually, that's your opinion, not 'the facts'. I disagree in about 34 different ways.

  • Scrubs always do.

  • 100 percent correct. Wish more people viewed it like this. Too many scrubby smashers these days.

  • The first time I tryed to wavedash I couldn't because my hands were to small(I was 8). I'm ten and I can finally wavedash!

  • Whoops, sorry DCDx89, I went to hit reply and accidently hit spam..... I was going to talk about how almost ANYTHING will net you a kill, and how the final smash essentially killed smash bros. It was a good idea, but something that is death or miss is just stupid.. also, what doesn't guarantee a k.o. in brawl?

  • Brawl = Melee

    Brawl = Newer

    That's it.

  • Brawl sucks in the face of Melee. Honestly, play a few rounds of classic on Very Hard in Brawl. Now leave your little safe bubble and play a round of classic on Hard in Melee. I see you're dead already :P

Brawl was made with the image of the "gamer" in mind, meaning quite literally, your mother, your father, and any "casual gamer". It stole what we Gamers had and took away the need for skill.

^How Melee will own Brawl, in nearly every aspect^

  • Don't bash a post if you don't know who you are talking to. I was a tournament contender in melee, maining falco. I knew all the tricks. The two games are different, and that's it. There is still a need for skill in brawl, and even if it is a "weaker" skill, or easier to pull off, people will still become better than other people. Both games are great, and different. Melee will never die, but it will never be as popular as brawl. If they make a forth, brawl too will lose popularity.

  • I'd like to ask, just how often you've switched between Brawl and Melee. I went from the Super Smash Bros, to Melee. Got my ass kicked because well, different controller, and I never owned a gc till recently. That aside, transitioning from Melee to Brawl wasn't anything like from 64 to GC. I've noticed that pretty much the only difference in the difficulties is the handicap that is given to the cpu, how far their attacks send you, etc. Brawl is one sided in that it gives over powering items

  • I remember the transition from 64 yo melee, and your right that was a big one. But if you use the gcc for brawl, there are minor differences but the control scheme is basically the same, until you break it down into the advanced techniques, that is. I go back to melee every once and a while, but I mostly stick with brawl now. Some of the items are overpowered, but I play with them off 90% of the time so it doesn't really affect me much.

  • I liked my items. I remember I would snipe people with them constantly. I still do, and I never liked using the wii-mote in any variation. And what was up with Zelda/Shiek's transformation time? it
