  • I learned to crochet years ago but didn't do much with it for years. I'm finally trying to learn to crochet new things, so I watch your videos a lot. I have a picture of a scarf that I'd love to make. Would you be able to look at it to see if it's something you know how to make, and if you have a video out there that would would teach me?

  • Red heart is a really cheap brand, and its not very good yarn. . .

  • @kokihi1 I disagree. The price is what makes it great for beginners. You can tear it out and re-crochet it over & over. Then if the person does not continue with crochet they are not out of a lot of money. I chose it because it's low cost, it's easily available (in the US) and it is hard wearing. I like Red Heart yarns. Yes there are some better quality yarns, but beginners need to use something smooth that is not too slippery and can take ripping and re-use.

  • I had to skip 4 mins of her pointless talking. I am glad you are not my lecturer lol. Thanks for the vid anyway

  • Turn on your annotations. You will see that there is a new improved video. You do not know how many beginners came to me wanting to learn to crochet with fuzzy yarn and a tiny crochet hook. I go into detail for a reason.

  • Thanks...except for the slip knot (your method just didn't work for me sorry) this was the perfect refresher course for me....all I had to do was find better directions for the slip knot which wasn't rd at all. thanks for the help in remembering how to do the chain :3

  • I was taught crocheting many years ago. Loved it. Problem with making afghan squares was that i ended up making socks instead. LOL

  • Thank you! Yours is the first video out of many that I truly didn't have to rewind a billion times thanks

  • thanks

  • you made dc simple best beginners video thanks !!!

  • I don't know I don't understand u

  • @princessrennie021 What is it you do not understand? Try the video that is linked in the annotation. It is newer and clearer.

  • Thank you for this awesome video, I learned a lot!

What size crochet hook would you recommend for a beginner and where did you buy your crochet hook? Also, where did you buy your yarn?

  • @horseridergm I learned to crochet using a J/10 aka a 6.0 mm crochet hook. I purchased Red Heart Supersaver yarn at Wal-Mart.

  • Thank you!

  • Everyone saying she needs to speed up needs to slow down themselves. Some people NEED to know the initial stuff like how to hold the yarn, and what the tool is and how to use it, and the best way to make a knot, and blah blah blah. This video was perfect for my pace, I went in knowing literally nothing about crochet, and taught myself from this video!

  • @rocklikeyoumeanit Thanks for your comment. If they pay attention, I do have a link to a newer faster video.

  • You take wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too long to get started.

  • @iknouluvmi1 Follow the annotation links. This is an old video.

  • Wow this video is great :) i bought this whole book and dvd to learn but they go so quick and its not zoomed in most of the time they forget that its a video fpr beginners!i like your alternatce to the slip knot too!

  • thank you for this vid as well as the improved vid..i tried to learn from an instructional book and it made no sense!thanks again:)

  • A very old woman (to me as a child) who lived in the back woods of Georgia, taught me how to crochet on the porch swing on her front porch. She had gnarled hands. Thanks for reminding me of this!

  • This video is absolutely amazing! I went through several and they moved way too fast and I could not understand what they were doing. This is me-speed, although my needle is much larger so it's awkward (scarf design I found asked for 10mm specifically, sigh!)

I Favorited this so I can come back to it later, and I will probably find more of your videos as I get more advanced. The chain feels awkward at first, I don't feel like I'm doing it perfect, but that's just the perfectionist in me talking!

  • less talking more showing

  • @NikkiFenton16 Follow the annotations. There is an improved video. Thais was my first one from 4 1/2 years ago.

  • @NikkiFenton16 shutup

  • kapele

  • @fancpumotherboard HUH? Band?

  • @fancpumotherboard caps?

  • Hi! This will be my first time crocheting and I wanted to know if lefty's can do this too or is there a different way for me to try or do. Thanks

  • @slc6299 Yes lefties can do this too but in mirror image. tjw1963 has a whole bunch of left handed tutorials. I highly recommend her videos. She is Teresa Richardson, AKA the art of crochet by Teresa AKA The Crochet Geek.

  • Thank you so much! I am having so much fun learning ( : You are so patient and do a great job of explaining! (=

  • Okay. Thanks a bunch!!

  • Should I steam it afterwards or before I crochet?

  • @luv2read100 After when you block it.

  • Is the yarn you're using acrylic? I hate acrylic, but I bought some anyway because I get overly excited when I buy yarn that I forget. Tehehe. I promise I'm not crazy. I'm also an artist and artist just get excited when we find an abandoned good quality pencil. XD

  • @luv2read100 Yes it's acrylic. It's what is requested for the charities I support. It also is durable for frogging and re-doing. Once a beginner learns, they can use whatever fiber they wish. Did you ever "kill" acrylic? That is take steam to it? It makes it really soft.

  • OMG I love you and I thank you for posting this video! YOU TOTALLY ROCK!

    I AM SOOOO grateful.

    You are BEYOND appreciated!

  • This is Great. Don't change anything its perfect I am learning how to crochet from this video its clear and easy to follow. Thank You

  • Thank you for being very basic! I am a beginner so your explanations are so helpful! :-)

  • Lucky you! I can NEVER get the yarn to come from the center of the skein. lol. :P I knit, but would like to be able to crochet because there are different things you can do crocheting that you can't do knitting. :) Thanks for the tips.

  • Thank you so much!!!I am so happy because there are really cute animals you can make and I think this was so helpful for someone really new to this world!Thank you so much!

  • Thank you so much for giving special attention to newbies and explaining everything so carefully. This is what a real class would be like. Well done!

  • @1slamicLife Thank You! I appreciate your comment! You cannot imagine the rude comments that say I talk too much or the "get on with it" comments. Thank you for knowing why I make my videos the way I do!

  • @Bethintx1 You're welcome. Keep up the good work and ignore the ones who don't matter : )

  • Love the video but I am haveing issues pulling the yarn threw. I am using a size k. Do I need a smaller one or am I holding the yarn wrong?

  • @77canucme Your tension is too tight. loosen up a bit. Notice I grab the slip knot with my left hand when I pull the yarn through.

  • Thank you so much for this amazing Video! i am so new @ this and this video helped so much! I was getting fustrated @ first, thinking i wasnt going to get this....But I got it! Thank you so much for your patience <3

  • Does it matter the size of the crochet hook to yarn size??

  • Very helpful video, thanks for the info

  • this might sound stupid but whats the difference of crotching or knitting? ive recently learned how to knit and am wondering if i should learn crotchet?

  • @swiminthissilense Knitting uses two needles. Crochet uses 1 hook. Knitting can be duplicated by a machine, crochet cannot. There are a lot of knitting patterns that require a crochet border or bind off. many circular patterns in knitting start with a crochet circle. I think it's good to learn both skill sets. I like crochet because I can crank out a blanket in a couple of days. while knitting one would take months.

  • @Bethintx1 thankkk you! i already borrowed my little hook thing and i actually use the same brand of yarn as you so hopefully ill learn it fast!

  • Sometimes I put a piece of tissue on my willy and pretend its a ghost.

  • Great video! I always wanted to learn and now I found a good channel to take lessons from. :)

    Subbed! :)

  • Alright. I'm on my way to Micheal's to get my supplies.

  • @chills251 Be sure to watch the new improved version of this video. The link is in the description and in the annotations.

  • thanks for posting this video. It will definately help people learn. I learned by picking up a learn how to crochet book and lavender colored yarn and learned from there. Ive also picked up a couple of stitches from the show show Knit and Crochet Now

  • @hbkgirl1982 You are welcome. If you share with your friends, be sure to share the newer version of this video in the description and on the annotations. This was my very first video ever on You Tube. I've improved the quality quite a bit!

  • its really weird to watch some one crochet. im 13 and like my mom knows how to and i learned from her and its just weird watching someone

  • I am a senior in high school now and want to learn to crochet like my mom before i live on my own.my mom and both my grandmas crochet alot and they are really good at it. there are alot of blankets lying around the house that they did. they make it look so easy. i really want to learn how to make baby clothes so i can make some when i have a baby in the future. i still have some booties that my grandma made for me when i was a baby in my memory box :)

  • I was wondering why there was so much time spent on explaining the yarn, but then I learned something anyway despite knitting for a few years :P.

This video was good, but I think it would be a little easier to follow if white yarn was used. or a different color, like maybe yellow, or a light green, only because the peach colored yarn kinda blends in with the hands I think

  • @Iza1289 Read the description and the how I got started on my channel page. That should explain a little. Thank you for asking in a polite way. Some others have asked this and were rude. :) Basically this was made for absolute beginners. Please see the new videos I have available.

  • i have the same hook, same color :)

  • @xmusicxgirlx96 This is probably the same hook I had back in 1976 when I learned to crochet! :)

  • thank you :) i really don't speak a lot of english but im trying to understand this tutorial i was wondering if you have a tutorial of how to make a doll or something like that in crochet my mom told me the chains for that kind of work was diferent

  • @chetos17 I do not have a doll tutorial specifically, but I do have a crochet lesson series called Back To Basics. It covers most crochet stitches. Go to my channel by clicking on my neame and then go to the search bar and type Back To Basics.

  • @Bethintx1 thank's :)

  • you have got to stop talking about the yarn and show me how to crochet

  • @peacegirl613 You have got to understand my teaching is for beginners. You should learn your alphabet before learning to write a novel. By the way, there is an annotation linking to the new version of this video; there is also a link in the description. This video has had over a million views and had been on You Tube for 4 years. It was the first video I ever up loaded. The newer videos are clearer and more to the point. Next comment try to be less rude. You will get more help that way.

  • @Bethintx1 Oh sorry. I didn't mean to offend you. Let's make a deal. Ok. Next time you get to the point and I'll be less rude.Oh by the way, what type of yarn was it. HAHAHA

  • I've got the part where you make the chain down (i think) but I'm having trouble putting the hook back through the first loop that the tail is going through... meanwhile, when I stop, I pull on the end and the whole thing turns back into a single thread :(

  • @blasianFMA Have you watched the new video in the link? It may be clearer for you.

  • Thumbs up if your boredom brought you here.

  • Thanks for the video, for me is very hard to learn crochet by myself and my biggest problem was to create the tension with the yarn! Thank you so much for shearing your knowledge, I will continue watching the following lessons!

  • i put it around my pinky and up through my middle and index fingers

  • Your link on the top right hand side is blocking where you teach to make the ring :(

  • @elleonhighheels Go to the link. It's a better video!

  • Thank you!!! :)

  • I think you should quicken the pace of the videos a bit. It seems like you didn't get to the first stitch until half way through the video. Once I fast forwarded the first three minutes, though, it was quite helpful.

  • @oppositeofcreativity Did you click the annotation or read the description? This video is an old one I up-loaded 4 years ago. There is a new better version linked to in the annotations. All the information is important for beginners who know nothing about yarn. While your constructive criticism is well intended, it it a moot point. You should do a little research before making these sort of comments.

  • @Bethintx1 WOW with 1,165,162 you must be doing something right - never mind the critics some will find a fault with a rainbow !

  • Excellent Videos - thank you very much. I've never crocheted before but I followed your videos to make a granny blanket on Wednesday evening and tonite i have made 25 squares! Your instructions were so easy to follow. Without people like you willing to share this i would not be able to crochet as none of my family or friends can do it :) x

  • im sorry but this DID NOT HELP at all...this is my first time trying to crochet! i didn't know much about yarn or the hook! i would rather finger knit!

  • @sk8gurl2010 Did you follow the link to the new video? Thousands of people learned from these videos. Maybe come back when you are ready to learn. See the Back to basics series on my channel too.

  • @noclassatall

If I would have known how to hold my hook, I would not have broken it the first time using it!

  • Thanks for sharing this video it sure is helping me learn!!!! I am sure you already know this but some people live to criticize others, if they only knew how bad they make themselves look in the process!!!

  • @scraplovin Thank You! I really gets my goad when people criticize and they are not even qualified to do so!

  • @noclassatall Did you go to the video linked to this one? I have the annotations loud and clear that there is a newer better version of this. After 4 years, 250 videos, and more than 9500 subscribers, you find the very first video I uploaded as a NOOB and criticize it! This video has helped thousands of people learn to crochet; and it has over 1 million hits. You, however, have zero videos uploaded. Can you do better?

  • Thank you! Very helpful, slow enough for me to understand, but not lose interest, in a brand new skill for me.

  • Thank you! nobody too it this slowly for me to understand!

  • im 9 and i crochet. im trying to make a scarf but i can only do a simply chain.

  • @superchoclatechips Check out the back to basics videos on my channel. You will make a scarf while learning the different stitches. The first one you should watch is called, Back to Basics Crochet: holding the hook, yarn tension, slip knot. At the end of each video is a link to the next one.

  • @Bethintx1 PS I put it as a video response below.

  • You've gotta be quite dense for this video to leave you confused...lol You simplified the basics well, imo. Thanks for the vid!

  • Comment removed

  • Dis is so easy hey it's ur sis I have a YouTube account now ily

  • @TheHappyness19 ...All of my sisters are older than me... Do you mean SIC? Welcome to You Tube!

  • Thank you for putting up your website. I enjoy making crochet and you helped me big time. When ever I need help I just go back, and watch the video's. I just use your site, no one else's. Thank you again, and I hope you put more on, so that I can learn!

  • i leard how to crochet just last night in about 5 mins :D i love crocheting! and i am only 11 xD

  • decent tutorial, but it does kinda take forever to teach how to crochet, just an fyi kinda thing for the future, but thanks for the helpful video:)

  • @missyclaudia7734 Watch the newer video I have linked at the top of the screen. It's much clearer and less confusing. Also watch it several time before picking up a hook & yarn. Then when you do work along with the video, press pause before trying to make the stitches. Then click play when you are ready to watch the next part.

  • Thanks for teaching me how to crochet

  • need helpp with a dress pattern wondering if you could help the directions say to Ch 4, turn, work until 14 sp; 29 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc. I have no idea what work until 14 sp is? What stitch does it want me to due?

  • @elisa102277 I would have to know the context of the pattern. Maybe it means work until you have 14 spaces. which is 29 stitches?

  • need helpp with a dress pattern wondering if you could help

  • this is a ver good video im not getting frustrated and stabbing my ball of yarn with my hook needle thingy

  • i had the exact same yarn

  • This is a very good video! I recomend it!

  • T.T I try and try but I can't get it I'm really confusing but I gona keep trying... Fighting!!!

  • @firefantasyfairy try watching the video through once or twice before even picking up your hook and yarn. Stay tuned. I'm getting a re-make of this video ready to upload!

  • @Lazybabyz I'm sorry you don't like my video. If you read the description you would see why it is the way it is. It has almost a million views. It has been used to teach thousands of people to crochet. I have annotations on the video to my newer and better quality tutorials. Have you made any videos to teach anyone anything? Right now from your comment, I see you as an ugly troll.

  • That was really helpful. Thank you so much.

  • omg you are awesome, I am a newbie on crocheting and you have already helped me so much thanks! I'm definetly going to keep on watching:D!!!!

  • Unless it's constructive critisism, keep your negative comments to yourself. You think you can do better, do your own tutorial. Don't like this one or the information or the technique that's used, view another tutorial...simple really.

  • @Switchyboo don't take the criticism so personal. Your dealing with a lot of people and a lot of personalities. That is what happens when you put yourself out there. Take the good and the bad...geez

  • Thank you for posting these videos and being so explicit. I hope I will be able to learn how to crochet as I want to crochet a beautiful hat for my little girl.

  • this is hard

  • i use the same yarn for knitting lol

  • what size hook are you using

  • @hinata8908 I think it's a J/10 6.00 mm. I'm not completely sure. This was filmed 3 years ago. Just use the size hook recommended on the yarn label. This way you can make it any size with any yarn.

  • thank you for posting these videos. My granny square looked more like a granny circle. I can't seem to get the square corners like you do. I am not sure where I am going wrong. Hopefully, it will come with practice...

  • very helpful tutorial will keep practicing and update if i can keep up

  • i dont like this video. it confuzes me and no one cares about your yarn details

  • i've been croceting for 3 years and i already made my own stitch i thought it as double crocchet at first but i was told by my aunt that it isn't. i also made a new way to start the beginning loop thingy.

  • this only confused me more. i must have been taught wrong a while ago. now i cant do it this way.

  • @MicrowavedTofu The thing about crochet is that there are several different ways of doing it. It doesn't make it wrong... just different. Try looking at other You Tube crochet channels I recommend on my channel page. They may make the Granny square in the same manner that your previous teacher did.

  • @hawnification I posted a message for you on your channel. I am aware of all the points that you said in your message. You should speak more clearly and light up your videos a little more. When you get a You Tube partnership, then maybe you would be qualified to criticize mine.

  • hi

  • i cant do it bc i am not crafty and i diddnt like the crochet vids no offence very informative but my neighbors logged on and screwed my account up

  • @marty4297 I have a tutorial on making a fringe. I'll send you a link in a PM.

  • @lpswebkinz12 Yes you can use different yarn. BUT... If you are just learning to crochet, be sure to use a smooth yarn that is not too fuzzy or textured. You need to be able to see the stitches. The textured, furry & novelty yarns are difficult to work with. Be sure to use the correct hook size for the weight of yarn you choose. I chose medium weight yarn and an I hook because it is easy to work with.

  • Fantastic and informative video! Thank you so much for your generosity! :)

  • Thank you for a great video. I am an avid knitter but had difficulty figuring out crocheting from books. I wanted to embellish some scarves with little crocheted flowers and this has helped me enormously. I am going to view all of your videos. Happy new year!

  • This will be my first time and I find your first video FANTASTIC! I have not got the hook yet because I felt I needed to "know" first - so as not to waste money.

I have seen a couple of videos on here, so far, yours stands out as superior. I look forward to more tutorials by you.

  • @FearingNightmare Yarn is the basis of crochet. You should use the correct tools and medium. I'm sorry you do not like my videos, however there are other crochet teachers on You Tube. I've noticed that you do not seem to know how to leave positive comments. Your channel shows what you've posted recently...all negative. If you want to be a critic, make some videos of your own. Become an expert in doing what we do, then feel free to criticize.

  • no have not tried granny square. Figured it would be easier going back and forth row to row but you might be right on this. I will look up granny square. Thank you

  • @harleydiva1200cc I learned to crochet by making the Granny square. It's easier to find the holes where you place the stitches and you do not have to worry about even chain stitches. Watch this video we are posting on.

  • I have attempted a baby blanket twice and had to tear it apart both times. I am having problems half way into the blanket and see that my ends are not staying even and the blanket decreases in size. Can anyone help me on what to do. I am a new beginner and can use all the tips I can get. Thank you

  • @harleydiva1200cc Have you tried this? the Granny square?

  • @harleydiva1200cc When you get to the very end of your row and turn your work, are you chaining any before you start the row? When you get to the end, are you crocheting into the top of the chain? Many times that chain is your first stitch of the new row (and should be counted) and when you come back to it you should crochet into it like it's a stitch.

  • Thanks for this.

  • Fantastic !!! Thank you!!!

  • Omg I think I've cracked it thanks v v much!!

  • Thanks for posting. It's a great place to start!

  • Im having troubles keeping the yarn wrapped around my left hand, and find myself using both hands when Im trying to pull the needle through the holes. any suggestions on keeping it therE?

  • @TheChocoPengu keep your index finger up...other than that just practice. Also check out other you tube crochet teachers. they may hold their yarn differently.

  • Thank you!!!

  • This was a terrible video. I can't see what your doing when your hand gets in the way so simply saying yarn over draw through is pointless.

  • @hbhaproductions I know. That is why I linked to my newer video series. This was my first video I had ever placed on You Tube. It is still here because thousands of viewers are still learning from it.

  • Very good tutorial!

    RMK

  • Great job this tutorial helped me a lot :)

  • Thanks for your video! It is the most helpful I have found on beginning to crochet. I am having a problem when I do the chains. After each chain, the loop gets too tight on the hook and so I can't slip the next loop through it and so I have to kind of work the last chain down to try to make it big enough to fit the hook through again. Am I supposed to need to do this every time or do you have a suggestion so it's easier? Thanks!

  • @orchidglow19 Make your first stitch tight and do not count it as a chain. (Make an extra chain.) Then slip stitch in the next chain to make your ring. Still work over the tail when you work your stitches.

  • @orchidglow19 No. You are pulling the yarn too tight. Be sure to slide each loop you make down to the widest part of your hook (just before the thumb grip). The yarn should glide & not be tight.

  • THANK YOU!!! I've been wanting to crochet some dolls and accessories for so long and I found your video in Youtube! Awesome tutorial! Thank You SOOOOOOOO Much XD

  • Thankyou so very much..!! this is the only video I have seen that has helped me learn to crochet. And now thanks to your easy to understand video I have now made two granny squares to my blanket And I have never done one ever before...YOU ARE JUST FANTASTIC..Cant say enough of your video and would like to say best thing i found..Ta heeps From Tracy Brewer

  • Did you say long Afghan hooks @ 2:27? or did I hear it such?

Btw, it is a good video! I knew this but forgot. Now my it is refreshed!

    Thanks!

  • @laall143 yes. They are used for the afghan stitch aka Tunisian crochet.

  • Very nice! Thank you!!!

  • Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou.!! For the first time EVER i watched and followed your video and now I have made granny squares..Cant wipe the smile from my face..So easy to follow and understand.. Once again Thankyou so much..!!!!!X X X X

  • good job with your videos, girl! we are women, hear us roar! while we crochet.

  • I'm a very auditory and visual learner, so I need someone to show me and explain how to do it. This video is extremely helpful. Thank you!

  • good lob idot
