There are several ways of accomplishing the goal, but imagine that you are right handed and placing interrupted or continuous sutures from right to left. For efficiency and safety, the needle continues to be held in the needle holder while the knot (first knot, continuous pattern) is tied.
The technique demonstrated would not work or would require an additional step and be wasteful of suture material. OK as a ligating technique, esp. with uncoated material.
remember that students and interns should not get caught using the one handed tying or you will get yelled at and get lower evaluations for your rotation
also, some attendings and seniors are picky about not touching the needle with the pickups while it's being driven through the patient. no one told me these things especially in the orientation workshop in OB and they yelled at me on the first day :(
