I love this song, gives me a terrifying force, with this powerful voice, rightly the album has sold over 10 million copies. Today's voice is not that many years ago, but going to a concert of Whitesnake, it's always a pleasure. I think that after so many years worth of rhyming, among the 20 most important bands in history.
I agree. The saints and sinners album has heart and soul. It sucks when the record companys make demands about marketing and forget about the real reason why David Coverdale sings. I love his voice so much. He is my favorite
@Greg4fun this song was released on 1982's Saints and Sinners album. Then it was re-recorded in 1987. The earlier version is so much better. It doesn't have the overproduction and posing that the latter produced.
@Greg4fun In addition, David Coverdale completely gutted the band in 1984 due to pressure from record execs to give the group a more marketable look. Needless to say, Coverdale is the only remaining member from this lineup that re-recorded the song a handful of years later.
The synthesizer part of this song was awesome in the original. Every time they try to perform it on stage or live, it never has the exact sound, which was awesome in itself. Too bad they lose that in their newer versions.
Of course it is a Hammond Organ. I could have told you that even if I was half deaf. I am talking about the original one - the one on CD - that, my little friend, is not a Hammond Organ making that sound. It's definitely a synthesizer but which one? It's awesome. BTW - I hate a hammond organ sounds. Sounds too old fashioned.
if you are referring to the 1987 album that was a remake The original version was on Sinner and Saints album which came out in 1982 Jon lord left the band around 1984 to rejoin deep purple. Old fashioned my ass there is a reason you still here hammond on recordings in present day maybe cheesy synth pads work for you but as a keyboardist I love my hammond and my leslie when overdriven nothing sounds as evil no synth has the balls of a B3 listen to highway star solo from deep purple thats rock
Shouldn't have been so low as to speak badly about the Hammond organ, but I am definitely into the new sounds and strings, for sure. When I played an organ when I was younger, it was a Hammond and the Leslie was truly awesome back then. Love to hear it used for black gospel. Nothing like a black gospel song, for sure. Thanks for the Jon Lord info. Will definitely listen to highway star. Thanks for the pointers.
Man. Too much Improv. Drummer is all all over the place. backing vocals are too high in the mix, sounds all gospel and shit. Too much cocaine me thinks. har har. Still love these guys tho. Slide it in right to the top!
I hear you! The word 'hobo' was in the original lyrics, but he decided against it, as people might poke fun of the song and go, 'Ha Ha , homo'. You know how pathetic some people are.
Respect to Coverdale for changing the lyrics back.
@Ryanmetalmatthew The words, drifter and hobo, don't really change the song that much. Somebody told me that the hobo was changed so it won't be confused with homo. Maybe the record label made them do it for that reason. There are two different mixes of the album, Slide It In, which the record label label made them do.
I saw them play in Nuremberg W. Germany in Sept of '83 and was in the Army at that time. Great show. I'll be ready and willin' to see Whitesnake again with this line up.
