This is an excellent historic summary of a really great MB car. The W114 flagship was the 280E series. The engine was one of the most efficient + powerful of it's time. In 1972 they managed to extract 185HP from 2746cc with 23.4nm torque! The engine was a DOC straight six with 2 valves per cylinder in V. Bosch D Jetronic fuel injection, 4 gear, 5 gear and 4 Auto were available. 0-100 9.9sec. Top speed 124mph (almost 200km).
Great reliable cars. I still commute with my father's 280E bought Nov'72
My father had 240D when I was a kid... I loved that car... so much space and a comfy ride... and then one day my mother decided to destroy a Yugo with it ...
Aha! A true classic indeed - as a matter of fact, when I was around 9 till 11 years old, amongst my FAVORITE cars to sketch included the W114/115 as well as W123 and W126 (mind you, as a kid I NEVER KNEW about chassis number differences as I only knew the model numbers - in my native Malaysia, the MOST famous models include 200/200D/220D/240D as well as 300D...hehehe :D )
Hey I see a footage of a black W115 coupe bearing a Malaysian registration number - Penang it seems :P
A million thanks from me too, for uploading this; this is Youtube put to the kind of ends it should be - useful, informative, educational, fascinating, rare as hell material; lovely stuff - fascination indeed!
I believe the "Stroke 8" designation was used for the inaugural model year of 1968 only, so as to avoid ambiguity with the older fin-tailed Mercedes still being sold that year. Once the fin-tail models were discontinued around January-July 1968, they no longer had to use that designation, although it has become burned in our memories.
The models officially designated as Stroke Eights were: 220/8, 220D/8, 230/8 and 250/8. But there was no 240D/8 or 300D/8, despite same chassis.
@WakemanFan90 For a daily driver consider a W123, as parts and regular wear items are much more plentiful...and cheaper...because the W123 is far more common....but there are still many people that use the stroke 8's as d/d too.....
Love the stroke eight!!!wish mine would maneuver like that!!!
