  • fantastic to discover an artist who has always been there, just waiting to be found.

  • @angostoora That's exactly how I feel about Kevin Ayers.

  • This has just been on BBC 4. Great stuff.

  • He is great because he does this song so well, not too serious but just enough to pull it off. He's brilliant.

  • nice call, @petepaphides

  • Kevin Ayers alone is better than soft machine

  • Flying Start. made the whole world sing they had no choice, like a shining pearl they sang in one voice. so far this is the only whole world song that I like. Much respect for launching Oldfield however.

  • L' plus époustouflant Kevin Ayers

  • Perfect song!!! Great music !!! 9 people don't know how realy good music sounds !!!

  • ...the soft sell.

  • this is the pinnacle of stoned out cheese

    love it...

I especially love Lol Coxhill's Star Trek robes... outstanding

  • @brainfungus

I'm remind of Ming the Merciless in the old Buster Crabbe movie serial of Flash Gordon.

  • i love Kevin Voice, the sound is like so deep!

  • Love Lol's Ming the Merciless outfit - KA would have glammed up well as Flash or more likely Louche Gordon. And Phil Collins on accordion - would he had stuck to this instrument instead of all that singing.

  • @bughandle07 : Phil Collins ? Ha ha ha ;-) Yeah, Bedford looks a bid like him here ...

  • Fantastic Kevin and fantastic band.

  • love this so much, had two trips and this sax is brill keeeep going man

  • my friend used to see him & the girlfriends at restaurant somewhere in London often, told Kevin brought v. beautiful one each time.. not the money only makes you happy or rich.. he still spends rich life, i watched the french TV program. cheers!

  • And Dave Bedford on Accordian!

  • Does it get any better than this?

  • As I follow a new musical thread set by LSDHead from Gong I see connections I've not connected for a while - do I see a Mr Coxhill on Sop Sax?

  • Timeless class

  • childish lyrics and flat as a pancake, but good memories anyway... A song for the deaf

  • this is so charming, i wonder if Mr Ayers has a computer yet?

  • @L0K3 his mispeis tells he hasn't a computer, good 4 him

  • Sure is....

  • i would marry him now that is legal

  • I only heard of this person by name but bothered to discover the mans music on the last couple of months. I'm glad I did.

  • Lol Coxhill used to wander around the South Bank playing for free. I remember seeing Kevin Ayers at the QEHall in early 70's and Mr. Coxhill was playing with and just walked off stage and up and down the aisle. Happy , unselfconcious , musical adventures , all gone into the past...

  • Lol Coxhill has some extraordinary vuvuzela skills

  • puis-je?

  • This song is just so painfully sweet! So beautiful! To my mind, it gives me a vision of sitting in a cafe minding your own business then a gorgeous woman suddenly walks in and sits right opposite you and all you can do is nothing but get lost in this woman's beauty :)

  • BUENISSSSSIMO !!!!!

  • This is brilliant relaxing music.Kevin Ayers -the unsung hero of a generation of music lovers.

  • ケヴィン先生。イビザ島でどうおすごしですか?

    この曲の妙な明るさが大好きです。

    先生のような人生を歩みたいな。

    日本のファンより。

  • Mike Oldfield on bass and Lol Coxhil on soprano sax, right?

  • Right.

    And David Bedford on accordion.

  • Correctimo! Mike in fact learned the Bass specifically to join this band because they wanted a bassist and he didn't know how to play!

  • @karyaubinga Yep

  • @karyaubinga

    Yezzer

  • Ming the Merciless on clarinet!

  • KEVIN AYERS I LOVE YOU.

  • Funny troupe. Great song though. This rendition is superior to the studio recording.

  • Wow.

  • great song

  • Might seem like a dumb question for Soft Machine fans, but WHAT ALBUM IS THIS FROM???

  • Kevin Ayers - "Shooting At The Moon".

It's also on some live albums, starting with "June 1, 1974"

  • Cool thank you for response. Never heard of Kevin Ayers before and was just given "Joy of a Toy" and it blew us all away.

  • Yes Joy of a Toy is wonderfull :)

I like how all the songs are 5:32 minutes long..

  • アップ、ありがとうございます

    Cette musique est merveilleuse.

    Questa musica e meravigliosa.

    Diese Musik ist wunderbar.

    Esta musica e maravilhosa.

  • You don't know what your talking about Deepintoblues, and his name Lowell Coxhill, and he's brilliant.

  • I think I know exactly what MY OPINION is thank you kindly. I didn't bash him as a person or as an artist. I didn't use his name because I don't know him. I cannot vouche for his brilliance yet.

  • Nobody needs for you to vouch for Lowell Coxhill Deepintoblues, he's earned his stripes. Your opinion is crap.

  • I respect your right to say my opinion is crap. But, I still stand by my original comment. Even if he is a great player which I don't know him as I said earlier - that is still a very bland emotionless solo. It is also a little pitchy IMO. Please do me a favor and point me in the direction of an example of best work instead of attacking me. I am ALWAYS in the mood to discover greatness. Thanks in advance.

  • Syd Barret style... i love this music... his songs with Soft Machine are very cool too...

  • This voice...

  • wow , the shy Mike Oldfield on bass guitar and Kev stoned as usual .

who is the sax player in this taliban outfit?

  • Lol Coxhill

  • this song comes to mind quite often when im on a train...........lol.

  • Kevin is one of the truly great British songwriters, up there with Ray Davies, Glenn Tilbrook, and Andy Davis/James Warren ( Stackridge/Korgis)

  • what about Lennon/McCartney?

  • Lol Coxhill is certainly at least a minor deity

  • i love this song

  • Something strange about this but I like it and the Whistle test was the best ever

  • nice! sounds a bit like I will be your mirror by VU

  • joy of toy ya

  • One of my favourite video on you tube, just perfect

  • Great song!Glass of wine,Jacobs cackers with a fine cheddar,Summers evening with your favourite woman.Cheers Mr Ayers

  • P-E-R-F-E-C-T S-O-N-G

  • Thank You Thank You Thank You!!!!! One of the best versions I've heard of this song so far!!!!!

  • Kevin Ayers is a mighty fine hero o mine

  • Makes me think of sitting in French cafes watching the girls and the world go by.

  • yes that's mike oldfield before he made his tubelar bells

  • omg, Kevin Ayers is so fucking amazing! love him

  • Yay !!!!

    Me also :)

  • one of his best songs. and his french version sound even better!!!!!!

  • what's the name of the song?!?!

  • It's called "May I?" from the 1970 album, "Shooting At The Moon." It's an excellent album.

  • Does anyone know if that is Mike Oldfield playing bass?

  • Yes it is.

  • thanks man,

  • Check out Kevin Ayers & The Whole World - Hyde Park Free Concert 1970. It's available from a label called Reel Recordings in Canada. What a darlin' boy!

  • THANK YOU VERY MUCH.........bey beyyyyyyyyy

  • oh, this is (still) good!

  • Hi,

Around about the time of this Clip Kevin Ayers appeared on the Old Grey Whistle Test and did an excellent version of shouting In a Bucket Blues. This was repeated on OGWT in early Eighties. Has anyone out there got a copy (please)

  • lovely baritone. Adore Kevin and love the new record....

  • This video is absolutly wonderful. I know that Kevin is releasing a new CD on 03 September this year and thereafter I would love him to come to Glasgow as I've never seen him live, so daily, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he does return to Glasgow

  • He's been recording with Bill Wells and Norman and Frances from Teenage Fanclub, so there's every chance!

  • Oh you rude banana!! this dude rocks. and how good is that live sound? Better than the vinyl? How many bands today can say that they sound better live than their MP3 going on in your creative ipod nano headshacks????

  • WERD!!!!!!!!AYERS IS LOVE!

  • Kevin Ayers was just one unique interesting creative and clever force

  • Wow...! He needs a documentary... What a voice.. Im in love.. Paully x

  • Coxhill used to busk in Leicester Square around this time. London was a better place for such things. May I recommend Kevin's first solo album "Joy Of A Toy" which is quintessentially English psych'. You won't tire of it!

  • You can hear some of Coxhill's busking on his first solo album, The Ear of the Beholder. His solo on "Red, Green, and You Blue" from the Shooting at the Moon album is a high point of civilization. Sadly, not much Lol on Youtube.

  • So this is where Belle & Sebastian got it all from...

  • I've been looking for this songe for years but the version I want has a guitat solo - definitely! Anyone heard it?

  • There's a version of this song with a guitar solo on the "June 1st 1974" live album he did with Brian Eno, John Cale, and Nico

  • The version you heard is, I believe, from the album "June 1 1974." A live record with a great guitar solo by Ollie Halsall.

  • hi fluffysdad, well according to Kevin himself (on the Old Grey Whistle Test DVD which contains this tune) it is indeed Mick Fincher on drums. I think this is a lovely song, sort of French cafe dreamy innocence. The French version on the album is great too.

  • Does anyone know who the drummer is on this version? (It is not Mick Fincher, who was in the band 70-71 ish.)

  • I've found the answer to my own question - Dave Dufort replaced Mick Fincher. The guy in this video isn't Fincher, unless he has had radical plastic surgery.

  • And check out a 16/17 year old Mike Oldfield on bass!

  • Such a great song.Does anybody has more from this concert?

  • The first professional band I ever saw - Parr Hall Warrington, June 1970. They opened the set with this song - brilliant!

  • This dude used to be in SOFT MACHINE. Kevin Ayers is a great musician, though not too many people know who he is.

  • You are gay, daliscape. Soooo gay.Poophead.

  • one of Kevin Ayers best songs, I love it.

  • smile-a-while

  • Check out Laughs Out Loud Coxhill on sax the master.

  • I remember this on a Christmas whistle test show, anyone got that show? The Residents were also on it I believe (from memory).

  • great song, its also available on the old grey whistle test dvd.KEVIN AYERS IS GOD.Have never seen any other tracks from this session, does anyone have a copy of em x

  • I love this song! Thanks for uploading this.

  • seeing this video has been one of life's great moments.

  • with a very young Mike Oldfield on bass ! ! ! !
