  • lovely story, combines social commentary with dimensional maths.

  • its 2 demision meeting 4th dimison

  • Third dimension, genius.

  • omg

i saw this at a film festival and i met the director

    its such a cool movie

  • but the question is what are not seeing if we knew what to see then we can elighten

  • ... Come again?

  • What IS flat land?Is it real?

  • I really hope you're not asking if it actually exists in our world....

Anyway, Flatland is a FICTIONAL two-dimensional world where men are multiple-sided figures whose social status is determined by the number of sides they have and their regularity, and their angles determine their intelligence and wisdom (circles, or many hundreds-sided polygons, are the most intelligent and thus the leaders, and acute isosceles triangles are the least intelligent and most deadly polygons).

  • Women are straight lines, the lowliest and least intelligent of shapes, but the sharpness of their extremity makes them the most dangerous beings in Flatland. The inhabitants of this land can see only the sides of others, and thus see others as merely a single, straight line. The main character, A. Square, is a mathematician who visits Lineland, a one-dimensional world, in a dream, and is later taken to Spaceland

  • (a three-dimensional much like our own) by a sphere who is preaching the Gospel of the Third Dimension. This same sphere later takes A. Square to Pointland, a world of no dimensions consisting of only one single-point being who has no perception of anything besides himself. He does this after casting the square out of Spaceland for becoming too ambitious and wanting to see the fourth or fifth or even sixth dimension, which the sphere himself could neither comprehend nor tolerate.

  • Har har! Very nice!

  • I hope someday some 4th dimensional being pulls me out of this flat little world.

  • Some say Learning whether 'extra' dimensions'could' be waste of time.

    Hell, I Live Them Daily...

Heaven is another one of those.

    ILL-defined Directions

    Greet Every New Thing

    with a smile. ::)))

    Four eyes

    three grins

  • I bought the DVD. Very nice.

  • I love philosophy. Good & strange movie.

  • I have to read this book for summer reading... for algebra. It sounds really good :)

  • greatest.book.EVER

  • math is beautful though. Its wonders set a deterministic path for us to distinguish what is realistically applicable or not. Very intriguing.

  • Very good book.

  • What up

  • Muy bueno, me recordó mis tiempos de universidad en que uno pensaba sobre estas realidades cuando llegábamos a R-n. Dale un poco más de profundidad al tema. Te sugiero el espacio imaginario (-1)^0.5

  • I like this.

  • i loved the book Flatland when i was 14. any person who even slightly loves math or philosophy should read it.

  • lol

  • lol

  • WoW...o_0

  • Haha. I read this book for school and it kinda confused me. But it was really good.

  • intresting..

  • I'm seeing dimensions being extensively discussed so I thought I would share the website of a particular book, the short video at this link does an excellent job of explaining the ten-dimensional theory tenthdimension com/medialinks.php

  • timg445-Time is not a spatial dimension, so one could not travel freely in it as Albert Square does here in the third dimension. A fourth spatial dimension is still largely the stuff of science fiction.

However, according to string theory, we may exist in up to 11 different dimensions (10 spatial+time). We just aren't aware of the small ones because they're all curled up into one another on a submicroscopic scale.

  • Wow! Not only is the video awesome but the implications are even more awesome and profound.

    N. James (a fourth dimensional being ((3 spatial+ 1 time)))

  • such a square, hahaha

  • beauty

  • flatland is flaaaaat

  • Ahhhh! Sick! This is totally sick!

and by sick I mean sweet

Abbott was totally nuts for thinking of this. A Square's reaction was totally different than what my reaction would be if I were brought into the 4th... mine would be more like, "sheeeeit." and then i would have a mind attack and probably die.

  • Marvelous! I just finished reading this book, and you did this extremely well.

  • beautiful, just beautiful

  • I want to read the book and see the film. Looks neat.

  • Looks cool, must've been high!!

  • If you like this way of thinking about our world geometry, you should also read the beautiful :

The shape of space. How to visualize surfaces and three-dimensional manifolds, by Jeffrey R. Weeks

  • True. True.

  • Pacman stole a micro chip :D nice video.

  • omg... im scared...

  • awe! nice

  • cool

  • beautiful, just beautiful

  • Baffled? In a 2-D world you only see edges which have a surface "length" that block your view of what's "inside". Think of this: In a 4-D world all surfaces have a surface VOLUME. 3-D objects are COMPLETELY in your view, guts and all. Get why the square was excited about "circularity beyond circularity"? No? Find the video "Dr Quantum - Flatland". Watch it. It's instructive. Then watch this clip again. Anyway, I have great hopes for this movie. It's right up my alley!

  • I can see a group of 5 year-olds sitting down in front of the television to watch this and not taking their eyes off it. That is all I can see!

  • Yes, Its not surprising that you can only see this, because u´re d typical ignorant that doesnt care about explaining science in d easiest way possible. If you read the book, it´ll open your mind and will makes you think about dimmentions.

  • Gonna have to buy this! Tried reading the book as had been told of the concept but really struggled with it! Don't get me wrong, the idea behind it and the insight into perception is impressive,(especially as it was written in the later part of the 1800s) it's just Edwin Abbott wouldn't win prizes for captivating audiences with his writting. Maybe I'm looking at it in the wrong light.

  • Haven't read Flatterland, but I for one don't have too many complaints about the source of all the others.

  • is that viggo mortensen talking?

  • lol

  • This movie is sweet, i have the signed copy 77. Well worth $20 us. I also love the T-Shirt, wearing it now. The XXL Fits me great and I am about a 112cm waist, and 186cm high. Ladd is still in the process of making this movie as good as he can. The version I have will possibly be unique. And once the final version comes out, a bit of a glimpse of the movies past. Yay for Independant Films. I really like the story line, which I don't want to spoil for anyone who wants to see it.

  • This was a good clip can't wait 2 see the rest of the movie.

  • All I can say is... If I had money, I'd buy the DVD right now. But I guess I'll have to settle for reading the book. X3

  • The flatland concept was told in the book and the video series Cosmos by Carl Sagan.

  • I really want to see this movie now...

  • Ladd, you rock.

  • Technically, we do live in an eleven-dimensional universe.

  • Then we can do 10 sequels?

  • That's one theory. There's lots of other theories too.

  • But we can travel freely only in three dimensions.

  • What if we could travel freely in the fourth dimension (time), and what if there are even more than four and we are that 2-D square who can only see so little of the world. That is what it is getting at.

  • theres most likely no dimension higher than 3. simply because u guys , like me, forgot that a land of sqaures and circles like this doesnt really exist. still, this movie looks great.

  • No dimension higher than 3?

Please, the fourth dimension has already proved by science.

"OUR UNIVERSE IS CURLED, OR, UNBOUNDARIED BUT SIZED.''

    Study more!

  • my geometry teacher made us read this book. I dont know why, its a social commentary more than anything. My favorite part was how the flatlanders would explode if they touched each other

  • the book was an attack on superstition (the flatlanders are like the flatearthers) and sollipsism (the one at dimesion zero thinks everything is caused by him) as well as other political commentary.

  • No its not. Flatland is used as a analogy to help us understand the dimensions that we do not percieve. We live in the world of the spherical guy, but the spherical scientist could just as easily be picked up by a 4th or a 5th dimensional scientist and be just as amazed as the Flatlander was. This analogy helps us think rationally about the dimensions beyond our capacity to comprehend.

  • Flatland was actually a way to look at society. Read the book and you can see that it is just a commentary on A Square's socitey and can be likened to Plato's Allegory of the Cave or even the Truman Show where the main character is in a world bigger than he can comprehend, yet there are greater beings that have a different and more profound perception of the universe.

  • Flatland the Film looks like it will be a great movie. I ordered the dvd a few days ago. Can't wait to get it! Nice trailer!

  • Alleluia he can see! lol. Great animation, great voices. Heck, great job! This is math class all over again. *shivvers* Not exactly a good thing lol. ^-^

  • cool .

what if you make a 4dimensional being viewing us?

  • Oh, wait. Forget what I said. Just saw your profile bit. The term "Flatland" has become so much in use that I didn't stop to think it was an adaption of the book, and I haven't read that specific book for various reasons, so I didn't recognize it.

  • I won't point out the plothole regarding interdimensional relations, and skip the the point- what does this teach us? Is this movie just what it is, or is it supposed to serve a higher purpose, beyond entertainment, such as use as a guide to understanding the fourth dimension?

  • love the visuals

  • cool. i had to read the book last year for math and i hate reading. i procrastinated until the day before it was due to start reading. i read it all in one night, it was surprisingly very very good. nice work.

  • Good voices, nice animation. Great stuff.

  • Amazing job!

I've seen on your webpage that this is an independent film. I read the book while I was an undergraduate back in Mexico and I liked it (although I didn't quite get all the words since my primary language is not english). As a tiny little piece of advice you might want to consider advertising in math and science departments in community colleges and universities, I am pretty sure that will helps towards your goal of getting funding so that you can send the film to festivals.

  • woah. were totaly reading flatland in mathc class

  • Very Nice,

  • I need to read this book.

  • ha ha ha So many memories of physics! =D

  • This? Rocks. I have yet to finish reading Flatland the book, but when I have, I will definitely turn to Flatland the film!

This clip reminds me of that bit in HHGG when Arthur sees the Mark II Earth...

  • loved the suqares reaction, and the music fitted it so wellat the end when he see's himself.

  • That was pretty cool. I'd definately check that out.

  • Good to see Pac Man getting work these days.

Kudos on the film! Now I just need to read the book.

  • wtf is this what are they talking about I DONT GET IT!!!

  • Go on FNAC site and look for "Cahier d'exercices", Ligeia Editions. Read it, it's great. Written by F.J.DUVAL

  • has no one read the classic book?

check it out if you like conceptual ideas.

you should be able to find the book free online as its very old.

  • nice

  • yeah wtf...i have no idea what this is

  • It is a clip from my feature film "Flatland"

  • very interesting!

  • wtf, this is educational.

  • stfu - it's interdimensional edutainment.

  • lol thats funny

  • woah! I have no idea what he's talking about!

  • This looks like a beautiful film based off a great book. I might have to find a way to see it :)

  • see, told you!! :) congrats it's great!

  • Looks interesting. Thanks.

  • well done

  • We just got back from the Sundance Film Festival and made a special effort to see "Animation Spotlight". None of these were a feature film and out of 8 shown I would only rate one as good. Yours style is great...beats anything we saw there! Send it to Cannes!

  • I've read the book; nice job!

  • what is that dude? the flatlander or whatever hes called. he looks like one of those memory chips or what-not thats in computers.

  • Cantstop - He's A Square, Attorney At Law, Esquire, from the Southern Republic of Flatland.

  • Fantastic from all 4 angles: 2D, 3D, Graphically, Musically.

  • Got to admit its kinda interesting.

  • Innovative use of 2D and 3D characters. Music and graphics are well done!

  • Interesting

  • The idea is cute but it is impossible to place a two dimentional figure into three dimensional space. Only three dimensional figures can exist in three dimensional space so the two dimensional figure would always have to be resting on a three dimensional figure.

  • Hey Statrei - In the film and the novella this issue is directly addressed. Flatlanders aren't really two dimensional - their height is just microscopic.

  • mm

  • Perhaps this is how we will act when exposed to higher dimensions?

Perhaps the Gods of the old and now are beings from a higher dimension?

  • very cool. I flatland too.

  • haha the book was awesome, and this looks like it will be too. why didn't you want to put in a 4th dimensional scene in the movie? was it the limitation of the animating program, or something else?

  • Actually there is a 4th dimensional creature in the film. But it isn't spelled out and you have to figure out what / who it is.

  • Tesseract ? HyperCube ?

  • Kratha - You'll just have to get the DVD and decide for yourself.

  • Let us fight to stop cultural degradation and let's protect our borders. BUCHANAN FOR PRESIDENT 2008.

  • We do not want creatures from the 2nd dimension infiltrating the 3rd!

  • WOAH, but still what is the fourth dimension? lol

  • I'm pretty sure this is one of the most amazing things I have seen on YouTube.

  • what a great book

  • Nice work...A winner

  • I was skeptical that a film of Flatland could work, but I think you've managed to capture it, with all the political allegory intact. Good job.

  • flatland rocks! it was required reading for my high school :D

  • same here! I had to read it for my Geometry class last year. It really was an interesting book, and I'd probably would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't a required book...that we would have to write a Blue Book essay on. :P I remember seeing pre-promos for this movie last June. looks pretty good :)

  • Kudos to the producers of this film! Looks like they did an awesome job adapting the book. :)

  • note that there is also a shorter "educational film" called 'Flatland The Movie' coming out soon, it looks to be a rather bland production (and 30 min.s I think).

  • I've read the book, it's soooo interesting :D

  • That is the next book I am going to purchase. Thank you for pointing me towards good literature. I have to buy this film as well. :)

  • i dont care ratings , comments etc. This short is amazing , absolutley amazing well good work whoever.

  • Is this supposed to have any religious connotation?

  • hirugaru - maybe.

  • "hirugaru" ?

  • xtramental99 - I was responding to hiraguru's comment.

  • wow - i totally spaced.

  • Hehe...happens to the best of us, mate.

  • wat is it?

  • Wow, freakin awesome! Thats some deep stuff. Great job on the music and graphics

  • I forgot to give you praise in my earlier comment. This looks really good and it appears that you've captured the essence of the book. Folks, please buy the DVD! There's too much garbage out there now. We need to support stuff like this.

  • Joe - Thanks for your comment, it's much appreciated.

  • Awesome! I love the flatland story, a great metaphor for visualizing higher dimentions.

  • why did you decide to make this using Bryce 3D

  • Hi Shapirog - I made it using Lightwave 3D, not Bryce. Bryce is an ok beginner's package but not suited for an entire feature film.

  • a lot better than the 1 dimensional version

  • Very Cool! gave ya five

  • Cool

  • cool.

  • lovely :)

  • Brilliant, mind-expanding stuff. You're a credit and an inspiration to all of us working on independant animated features.

  • coool

  • That was nice, bro! Now that it worked for me, I finally got to see it.

    Good job!

  • Thanks Dylerius!

  • I've heard about Flatland before, but I'm too damn lazy to read it. How'd you legally pull this off? Is the book public domain? Did you hire voice actors? Are you producing the DVD on your own? If I had the money I'd buy one, maybe I will once I get some spare money.

  • Hey Brad - The novel is a public domain novel, so the rights are free. I used friends with acting experience and am producing the DVD on my own. Let me know what you think of it if you get a chance to get a copy. Thanks!

  • Awesome. Read this 30 years ago. I will be ordering this and wearing the shirt!

  • ACID-TRIP!! ROFLAO

  • LOL!

  • This is wonderful. I loved the book and would never have thought in terms of it as a movie. And of course the irony of watching a movie of a 2D lifeform being moved into 3D space all shown on a 2D screen is just delicious.

Definitely a movie I plan to buy.

  • visually very interesting but I just didn't understand what it was all about or trying to say...

  • Hey Maffu - It's a clip from the movie, just a teaser to pique your interest.

  • The book was pretty darn cool. I hope the film is just as good.

  • Thanks robotacon - me too! Check out the DVD and let me know what you think.

  • Where is flatland? Can i purchase a ticket to it?

And by the way, What do you drank before you made this? :)

Any way, Pretty good vid ;)

  • Thanks norbert! You can get the DVD at my website - see link next to video in the blurb.

  • i too have trouble looking at myself in the mirror, thank god this video helped me and so many other like me realize that life is worth living.

  • Can I buy drugs from you?

  • lol I was thinking the same thing

  • Just the DVD :)

  • The book was amazing. I'd have to see how they handle the 2d portions, or even 1d... lineland was messed up.

  • You can see some of it in my other clip, "Flatland: Assassination"

  • "ur circularity is beyond circularity!" -flatguy

haha. nice one. I always wanted do something about the flatness of 2D.

  • I just read a short story called "In Fading Suns and Dying Moons" by John Varley, which made reference to the book Flatland, a Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott. Pretty freaky stuff. The purpose of both of these works... as well as this video I assume, is to show that there are "higher" dimesnions that humans can't see but that affect them, much like Mr. Aquare was oblivious to the 3rd dimension.

  • Great! I enjoyed it!

    Keep up the creative work!

  • Ernoware - Yes, it is still in there.

  • This was awesome! I really got into it!! What other works have you done??

  • This is my first feature film.

  • I still recall reading the short story "Flat Land." It was a better introduction to the worlds of Two, Three and Four dimensions than that clip was, but I understand that it was only a preview.

  • Yes, this is about 1/2 way through the film and serves primarily to introduce an audience to the film, not to the concept of multiple dimensions.

  • you suck.

  • you swallow.
