This movie is an overlooked gem. This was one of the best scenes of the movie.
This scene should have been recorded a little longer. He asks the girl to leave while she is voicing high-minded sentiments. He gives her some money to tide her over, then says "you must go now, before you corrupt me with your philosophy". It's a moment of wry Chaplinesque humor.
Such a beautiful scene! Even in Chaplin's character he has a spirit of compassion. I've watched this movie twice now and it always blends a smile to your face however, in the end he sooooooo cunning when Verdoux goes to his trial and excecution. What I admire the least in Chaplin and this movie is he's so well spoken. I always love the way he tells his stories...much like a poet. Another movie I found very intresting is Limelight. Thanks again for this lovely scene! :)
Once and for all Chaplin was a capitalist and owned half of the stock of UA when this was made. I loved this movie, but remember the movie asks through out, "What is the source of EVIL." Why do people punish a seriel killer for four or five murders but turn their heads at war when millions die! This was right after WW2, I understand he was stunned at both the holocost and the atomic bomb, wiping out two large cities! He was never a communist!

Is it just me or does Charlie Chaplin in this movie look like a cross between Harvey Korman and Vincent Price?

There is a great poignancy to this film and Limelight. I love them in spite of their weaknesses.

Chaplin was deeply critical of capitalism, and he makes it clear in this film.

A truly courageous and genuinely subversive work of art.

For those who haven't seen this great movie, it should be known that in this scene, Verdoux had planned on killing her, and had poisoned her wine.
