Here in Tuscaloosa our JVC plant (like Mercedes) is still running full strength, though half the town's destroyed. There's the scene in "Hannibal" where Mason Verger says, " I have immunity from the US Attorney and I have immunity from the risen Jesus, and nobody beats the Riz!".
Gone is the mom & pop feel of fun neon and cool (at that time) music, replaced by the soft, middle America, neutrality of earth tones and calming consumerist family values bullshit of "made in china" box stores.
I'm only 26. But 30 years ago people complained about stuff being made in Japan. I would LOVE to have something made in Japan let alone the USA. Bad USA poltics and crony capitalism lead to us having stuff being made in China
. Weren't Communist Evil ?? In the 1950s and 1960s it was. The whole damn cold war was about it. Was there an exception made if they make stuff really cheap and could bring to america??
Nobody beats the Wiz was a store that was only in the areas of the NY tv market. This is why there were no ads in the VA area. It had shut it's doors and was later reopened as "The Wiz" and was owned by Cablevision. Their doors closed again, for good, in 2002. I believe the farthest south they had a store was Toms River, NJ.
I remember this add LOL! I also remember when Biz mark (rapper) Ripped off the jingle for his record (Nobody beats the BIZ)and the Wiz sued him! lol. I loved the Wiz as a teenager, going to Fulton st. Mall in Brooklyn They had two stores across the street from the other they were so large 3 floors! The good old broke days! Loved the black and red Neon signs.
Glad you enjoyed the commercial. I also just found a CGI 1992 commercial of the Wiz on one of my tapes which I should have up in a week. Check me out then. Thanks!
i wonder if we ran into each other downtown and didn't know it!!! there was the wiz, then beat street (when it was just a small shop) and dr. jays... i miss the old brooklyn...
and the days of soul train with the johnson hair care commercials and the drive in movie with the bad martial arts films, and then we went outside to play... those were the days.
Back in the old days you would have a "clicker" which was a sequential remote control which means it can only go "up" and "down" the stations on the remote. A random access remote would have a keypad with different numbers so you can change the channel to any random number. Hope that helped!
$217 back in 1986 was like $1,000 today I think

$217.00 vcr with a wireless remote? I can't believe that price. It could easily go for well over $1000.00.
