  • $217 back in 1986 was like $1,000 today I think

  • Here in Tuscaloosa our JVC plant (like Mercedes) is still running full strength, though half the town's destroyed. There's the scene in "Hannibal" where Mason Verger says, " I have immunity from the US Attorney and I have immunity from the risen Jesus, and nobody beats the Riz!".

  • I used to shop at The Wiz a lot. I miss it ever since Cablevision shut it all down.

  • Nobody beats the Wiz, except the economy.

  • @biped19

Well P.C Richard and J&R beat em ! not to mention Best Buy, and Cablevision as owners.

  • @indyfan22k

    Indeed:)

Gone is the mom & pop feel of fun neon and cool (at that time) music, replaced by the soft, middle America, neutrality of earth tones and calming consumerist family values bullshit of "made in china" box stores.

  • @biped19

I'm only 26. But 30 years ago people complained about stuff being made in Japan. I would LOVE to have something made in Japan let alone the USA. Bad USA poltics and crony capitalism lead to us having stuff being made in China

. Weren't Communist Evil ?? In the 1950s and 1960s it was. The whole damn cold war was about it. Was there an exception made if they make stuff really cheap and could bring to america??

    talk about BS.

  • CREEPY

  • I guess Bankruptcy beat the Wiz... Murdered Crazy Eddie, Shat Alexander's they are all in heaven eating at Nedicks.

  • Nobody beats the Wiz was a store that was only in the areas of the NY tv market. This is why there were no ads in the VA area. It had shut it's doors and was later reopened as "The Wiz" and was owned by Cablevision. Their doors closed again, for good, in 2002. I believe the farthest south they had a store was Toms River, NJ.

  • Soon flat screens & DVD players will be extinct .....keep inventing

  • 2 people got beaten by The Wiz! I remember this commercial as though it was yesterday.

  • $349 bucks for a 19 inch Color TV and now they sell them at Walmart for less than $100 bucks!!

  • @peachhead3

difference is MEn and WOmen in the USA made the TV not Chinese Boys and Girls.

  • but wheres the wiz???

  • Sweet deals. I love the new wave theme song. This was the Best Buy of its day.

  • back in 86, having a 19 inch tv with a VCR was the entertainment center.

  • I gotta get one of those random access remotes.

  • What cost $349 in 1986 would cost $676.55 in 2008.

$676.55 is like a crappy 42" tv today.

  • 400 dollars for a 19 inch Tv?!!

    WoW the 80's kinda sucked......kinda........

    but not really

  • legit price at the time lol

because NOBODY can beat the WIZ

  • Why did I see 1000 of billboards for this place up north, but not a single The Wiz in VA?

  • Someone should have made a 4-minute song using the tune for Nobody Beats the Wiz.

  • Biz Markie already did that back in the day.

  • Biz Markie kinda did. Look up "Nobody Beats the Biz."

  • $217.00 vcr with a wireless remote? I can't believe that price. It could easily go for well over $1000.00.

  • I used to like the store but it has gone the way of Circuit City.

  • Ahh the 80's tv commercials...I remember the Jewel store adds too

  • I miss the WIZ! I remember the one on 96th and broadway from when I was a kid... I remember the old Symphony Space, too.

  • symphony space is not around anymore? wow...

  • NOBODY BEATS ME BECAUSE I'M THE WIZ!

  • @nyyankeefandp No, I'M the WIZ! :P

  • Good riddance to this horrible store

  • I remember this add LOL! I also remember when Biz mark (rapper) Ripped off the jingle for his record (Nobody beats the BIZ)and the Wiz sued him! lol. I loved the Wiz as a teenager, going to Fulton st. Mall in Brooklyn They had two stores across the street from the other they were so large 3 floors! The good old broke days! Loved the black and red Neon signs.

  • Glad you enjoyed the commercial. I also just found a CGI 1992 commercial of the Wiz on one of my tapes which I should have up in a week. Check me out then. Thanks!

  • haha thats great im actually friends with the owners son (jemal) its pretty cool knowing that store was such a big deal

  • Thats cool, did he give you any good discounts on the floor models?

  • i wonder if we ran into each other downtown and didn't know it!!! there was the wiz, then beat street (when it was just a small shop) and dr. jays... i miss the old brooklyn...

  • Old Brooklyn... Yea being a "Brooklyn Boy" I know what you mean.

  • and the days of soul train with the johnson hair care commercials and the drive in movie with the bad martial arts films, and then we went outside to play... those were the days.

  • @lumbia33 down on fulton street son

  • @17mark1717 fulton street, yup!

  • rip WIZ.

  • I miss that store one of the best electronics stores in the ny/nj area

  • i was thinking this was michael jackson, the wiz...

  • 19" tv?

    phew!

    what a view.

  • i'm the wiz and NOBODY beats me!

  • am i having a flashback?

  • nobody beats the wiz, except Chuck Norris.

  • what's a random access remote?

  • Back in the old days you would have a "clicker" which was a sequential remote control which means it can only go "up" and "down" the stations on the remote. A random access remote would have a keypad with different numbers so you can change the channel to any random number. Hope that helped!

  • Thanks for that clip, brought back some fond memories of that 1986 holiday and the fact that i actually remember the clip VERBATIM, another +!

  • thanks gramps

  • Who the hell you calling gramps?!
