  • old games didn't fuck around. they were hard as hell! video games nowadays are waay too easy!

  • Way to go IGN to not mention the C64 and Amiga, retards..

  • Being born in 1990 I kind of look at the 80's and think 'that must have been fucking mindblowing at the time'. I really admire the 8 bit micro homebrew games defining the generation for a while, especially in the uk. Just a pity that the concept of the 'bedroom coder' is either dead or marginalised and branded as 'indie' where back then the indie games were usually more popular than licenses and arcade ports.

  • skyrim, uncharted 3, batman arkham city, mass effect 3, the last guardian, hitman absolution, these are brilliant examples that singled player games are alive and in a matter of weeks we will playing them. stalking criminals as batman or exploring dungeons in skyrim, the latter with 300 plus hours of gameplay.

  • wow they made a 6 minute video for gameboy but a 2 minute video for ALL the games they remember

  • actually more like 1992-1999 for the silver age

  • I'd say 85-92 were the golden age of videogames...

92-97 was the silver age of videogames

& now... games are so far & few & bad we are a few years out of the broze age

  • @playaeyez17 depends on how you compare. I mean, do we really want to go back to pacman after playing Mass effect 2 or resident evil 4? I do agree that the 90's were awesome though. Resident evil, half life, alone in the dark... I had such good times with those games

  • This stuff should be a full blown series whith videos lasting 10-15 mins each.

  • Gee,love that Zelda Rap.....

  • Where's the King's Quest?!

  • I still have my little NES with Super Mario 3 hehe

  • i cannot beliv one of their fovorite games is not mario!

  • I played Kane and Lynch 2 the other day just to play with someone else in my room. I miss games like that. Offline multiplayer... Now all they have is Guitar Hero

  • Thank god For the NES who new where Gaming would be without it. :')

  • @llDeaTHhIMseLFll A world where people know how to spell and use capitalization properly?

  • @TheGodlyAsian Shut up stupid grammar nazi.

  • @llDeaTHhIMseLFll Actually if I'm a grammar Nazi then I'm not stupid since I know how to use proper grammar.

  • @TheGodlyAsian your an asshole

  • @masik7290 Thank you ;D

  • I wish I could press rewind to 1987 NES is like the Micheal Jordan of gaming consoles.....so legendary it's surreal and it's games have also aged like fine wine.

  • at 1;23 am i the only one that thinks that looks and sounds like an older version of kevin from the office?

  • The Best first multiplayer game was Bond!!!

  • NOW ur playing with powah-nintendo now youre thinking with portals-21 century

  • did anyone else her him say mariyo?

  • Im qith Dawrecker here who ver desided to only devote 2 minutes to the entire decade that made gamine what it is today should be fired.

  • "Its The Legend of Zelda and its really rad those creatures from Ganon are really bad." I can understand they weren't very creative back then but seriously wtf?

  • @TheAfroCorporation Well, they were plenty creative. Hell, give me a lame rap song for a commercial over any modern day commercial.

  • ET was my fav 80s game! lol. just kidding. my fav would be either the legend of zelda or super mario bros or super mario bros 3. too many others to name.

  • ahhh the 80's some of the best times for movies music tv shows and video games just like the 90's

  • Comment removed

  • and music

  • yeah the games were simple compared to today but they are still good i actully wants a NES and some games like in the movie from the 80's

  • My favorite game of the 80's was Pac-Man

  • @misssweetiepie10 Mine was SMB

  • @ 1:58

    X-WING EPIC WIN

  • LOL at the NES rap.

  • I seem to enjoy a lot of the games that came out in the 80s even though I never really got into gamiNg until the mid 90s. It mustve been awesome to actually have been there

  • I have to admit...I had that garbage E.T. game for my Atari 2600. Regarded as the worst produced game ever.

  • H.E.R.O best atari 2600 game

  • wow Zelda takes me back

  • Nerd rapping at 0:47 Funniest shit ever.

  • the old nerds

  • Games have come a loooong way since then.

  • Yup, and it's all thanks to those games that games are the way they are today.

  • Indeed

  • Why is this vid only 2 mins ? Seriously 2 mins dedicated to a decade ! ! !

  • @DaWreckster its not the quantity but the quality?

  • @thepineapple1 No it's IGN being lazy bastards.

  • @DaWreckster and, though i wasn't born yet, i bet it was the best decade ever, i wish i was born by then

  • @DaWreckster a resumed decade?

  • why is there a 60 yo guy in this vid

  • @thomatude

Because he grew up with the games and he knows about them??

  • fuck off hes 60 years old he grew up with the ball and cup

  • Who the heck cares if he's sixty? He has experience with the old games...unlike you who were born 5 years ago.

  • 17 years ago thank you very much

  • Well then why are you being prejudice towards older people?

  • jesus christ, take a chill pill gramps..

  • @thomatude Your retarded

  • you're*

  • either say you are "OR" you're

  • nes saved gaming

  • that dude with the q-bert shirt reminds me of Kevin from the Office...

  • What was the tune playing in the background?????

    I've heard it before!!!

  • clueless old men

  • lol haha

  • When the NES came...that's when gaming in the 80's came back!

  • Nostalgia hurts, and I wasn't even around in the 80's, much lol

  • I think gaming is headed for a crash again. Some of these gamers today won't even support singe player games because they just want to play multiplayer over & over & over & over again. It's getting to the point where i think one day single player games might not be made for lack of support.

  • @xkrazyxboix101 true i like multiplayer but single is better in m opinion

  • I don't think single player games are getting less popular, it's just multiplayer games are attracting a large ammount of people who wouldn't normaly play games.

But even single player games are diminishing it's not a bad thing, playing games online is wayyyy more fun

  • +you cannot torrent the online games

  • Multiplayer is just minldess run & gun.I don't know how you could find that more fun but maybe your more easily amused. Games are about the experince of playing through a story & a different fantasy type world, not just about mindless run & gunning. Maybe you forgot what gaming is. Multiplayer doesn't attract a bunch of people who wouldn't normally play games but just people who have forgotten singleplayer & become obsessed with multiplayer.

  • @xkrazyxboix101

Multiplayer's fun too. Developing tactics with friends and enjoying their company through the game. It's a nice feeling.

  • 3diot very true ^^

  • You're confusing multiplayer with FPS multiplayer. Just because it has multiplayer, doesn't mean its "run and gunning." The thing about competitive mutliplayer is that people LOVE proving themselves over other human beings rather than AI; this makes it more worthwhile. Sure, in today's games people demand it more than anything else. I personally, like co-op beat 'em ups like Castle Crashers would be. Wish they made more of them though... :(

  • @xkrazyxboix101 Maybe that's what games are about to you is projecting yourself in some fantasy world but to normal people, games are fun just because you're with your friends. It doesn't always have to be mindless running and gunning, there are more than just FPS multiplayer games.. I on the other hand like playing by myself and all but when a friend is there I have someone to converse with because i like having friends around but dont want them to be bored watching me play.

  • Games are just fun but it's as if people forgot what got them into gaming.Console multiplayer just became popular 5 years ago.Think about what gaming was to you & what games you played before you ever touched multiplayer . . . . . . . but once you play multiplayer you get hooked & then all of the sudden single player games are what, a bad thing? I remember when people got together & beat games & now people just want to play competitiveley across the internet. What happened to games?lol

  • I've never gotten into online play. That does seem the way things are going though. Lots of single player campaigns now feel like adverts for the multiplayer...Gears Of War felt like that. I will get into all that eventually but I agree with you, what I like most about games is getting lost in a world and an adventure. A Shenmue or a Zelda for instance.

  • games evolved thats what happened.

  • @xkrazyxboix101

Nintendo's Ironman Ivan Stewart's Super Off Road with the Four Score (allowed for 4 players) was the most interactive game I had played at the time and it flippin' rocked! Early 90's. But I do completely agree with what you're saying. Nowadays kids don't have to come up with cool ways to call next game on a single player game.

    NG = next game

NGA = next game available (if there was a line)

    Good times.

  • @xkrazyxboix101 My first gaming console that wasn't a handheld was the Sega Dreamcast and on there we had NBA 2k, NFL 2k, Star wars episode 1 racing and the Sega Generator which was a demo disc. I would play the Sega Generator and the racing game a whole lot it was that feeling of being a character in a world that you can't access in real life. And I think it is almost the same way with online multiplayer too. You're playing with people in a world that might not be experienced that often.

  • @xkrazyxboix101 I go to my friends house all the time, and all we ever really play is TimeSplitters 2 (one of the most UNDER-RATED games ever made) and Army of Two. We have more fun there than any gamer could have online.

  • @xkrazyxboix101 Now there's no Co-op :D

  • @xkrazyxboix101 What happened to videogames in regards to single player quality/lack of individual fufillment, is the same thing that happened to your "pc" internet experience with the rise of more & more "re-fined" social networks (from first branches of scoial atempts like AOL, which was unique, to the impersonal shallowness which IS Facebook/Twitter today). People strip the intended scope & depth of every great medium untill It casually fits in with thier HARDCORE insecure pc-world conformity

  • @xkrazyxboix101 it make me sick to see what multiplayer has done to games over the past 7 years...It all started with X box live and that piece of shit HALO 2...thats when the seed was planted. thats what ruined video games. no more adventure...no more exploration...just multiplayer... multiplayer...multiplayer...multiplayer...kill streak..air strike..kill streak...air strike...

  • @xkrazyxboix101 well fallout, masseffect are bringing those feeling back

  • the guys tshirt is from phantasy star online =D

  • My father bought Qbert for the atari 2600 when I was a kid. We got home and the cartridge was broken so he took it back.. and never got another copy. So I had to watch kids with quarters play it on arcade machines.

  • the same thing happend to me all tho it was a NES game

  • like everything else games in the 80's sucked!...apart from North vs South that was amazing!

  • Nintendo Started it all

  • ZX81 my first computer !

  • How could you know that it sucked? You were not even born during that era, so you only judge by the views of television and the Internet.

Guy's like the nineties 8 year old know-all LOL

  • i did play the games from the 80's

i owned many of the old gear the sega fail i had the cd player and everything it looked horrible (im playing allot of old games on my pc atm (emulator))

    then the n64 came along

    n64- great

    sony - over hyped

    dreamcast - great

  • N64, Sega CD, Playstation, and Dreamcast are all 90's systems :P

  • yeah i know i was debating with a guy

  • Sorry, was just confused by the post. I have to say that I preferred some genres in the 80's,90's, and Modern. Usually i prefer older RPGs since they tended to focus more on the actual story and the fact you are playing a role rather than the gameplay and they seemed to be more about strategy rather than pushing the right button at the right time. I prefer current day shooters, and I definitely prefer modern day horror games.Movie games have and always will suck...

  • never tried rpg games like final fantasy it always seemed confusing

anyways gona play bioshock 2 now with my new Z 2300 sounds system WOOT !!!!!!!!!!

  • Have you ever played Goldeneye?

  • Yes I have

  • Movie games do suck, but there are exceptions that come off as suprisingly VERY good with rating +9.0 .. Check Riddick:Escape from Butcher Bay, and the 1st Godfather game

  • I never had a chance to play those two because I'm paranoid of wasting money on any game associated with a movie because of bad experiences as a kid. I personally blame the company known as LJN.

  • The Godfather game? Are you for real?

  • dont forget Goldeneye007

  • Cant believe I forgot it. One of the best games I played. I recall when I was a me and brothers used to imagine a deathmatch and play it out verbally, just like that. thats because we could'nt find a copy, later we bought it used without any box or Manuel for 60$.

  • The 80s was a Odd era for gaming. I still own my Turbo Grafx 16 I mean the 80s was like a Child painting you had to say it was ok But if you said it sucked the kid would cry. the 90s was the mature version. I play alot of 90s games But Not a whole lot of 80s. I would play alot of 80s if I was Bored But Im into modern gaming :)

  • the reason i hated the games in the 80's were first

the commercial omg they were soo over hyped and allot of the games were impossible to beat

like ninja gaiden even mario was super hard for me

but the n64 came out and i played zelda ocirana of time and if i was old enough back them i would have came lol

it was the best thing that ever existed on earth

im even playing it now (emulator) even though my system can handle crysis

  • new gem games can't do what Old games can do. I mean new gen games are rushed and back then Nice and easy. Thats prob why I Think that im Quite young and I remember Playing alot of Old games E.G Pokemon stadium Mario Bros Majors mask E.T.C and I still play em when im bored.

  • u are 100% right

only some new games are not rushed like the zelda series

  • Same. Thats what made games fun. Capcom knows that (Mega Man 9/10) 90s were the time to be a gamer.

  • PS3!!

  • cool cocks

  • Zelda was awesome.

  • The rap even more.

  • contra and Mario bros 3 that's all I need.

  • pac man and space invaders

  • i think of qbert

    and donkey kong

  • DOS games :3 I used to even make those things!

  • WHAT ABOUT METAL GEAR

  • "It's The Legend of Zelda and it's really rad!

Those creatures from Ganon are pretty bad!"

    lol

  • 2:01 isn't that X-wing? or X-wing vs. TIE fighter? I'm sure that didn't come out until the 90s

  • Did that guy seriously say "Mayrio"?

  • I know what you mean.. frustrates the shit out of me when these "pros" say stuff like that

  • Yea, a bunch of people pronounce it like that. Its not wrong, like tomato tomahto

  • Cool but way too short to be a good look at an important decade of gaming.

  • ahaha good old dos games

  • i used to play Gauntlet for hours and hours, anyone remeber that game?

  • @socramzilos Gauntlet makes me think of dusty pizza parlors, and arcade game machines with cigarette burn marks. :)

  • Wow this is so anti-nintendo it's ridiculous. They don't mention Donkey Kong?!

  • @harmfulifconsumed

So. They didn't mention Quartet or any other sega game and I don't call it anti-sega. Games were just games and didn't get that much brand recognition till way later in the '80s. Some people did call NES an Atari back then, afterall. Donkey Kong is just as easy to forget about because of all the games that came out in that decade. There's also the fact that Donkey Kong did also come out for Coleco, which was playable on an Atari.

  • documenting 80's gaming without even mentioning Donkey Kong? wtf?

  • punkrockid4 how it is shit?

  • see what nintendo did i don;t know why u ps3 and xbox fanboys hating on nintendo i it wasn;t for them there will be no videogames

  • but now they are shit

  • Lrn2typ

  • I love that one guy, "...dos games..."

  • yeah same lol, i played all kinds of obscure dos games

    TIE FIGHTER FTW

  • haha I know what he means about video game stereo types.

LMFAO @ peoples out dated knowlege on common technology.

Those are the same people who say the ipod is "just a phone".

  • i love video game history

  • Is it just me or does the guy at :28 bare a striking resemblance to Kevin from the US version of The Office and sound like him too?

  • lol thats a good one

  • your retarded.

  • It's too bad I wasn't around in the '80's, either.

  • i wasn't but i still play nitnendo

  • Looking back I'm glad I got to experience it first hand.

  • Ahh, i miss these old game's.

  • still got my nes

  • Oh god, I remember trying to play E.T. I didn't know wtf was going on. I also remember giving my NES game cartridges a lot of blow jobs to get them to work.

  • PACMAN from my 2600 and Super Mario Bros from my NES...

  • Too bad I wasn't around in 80s.

  • What I remember the most is playing Mario Bross and Ninja turtles more than any other games in the NES.

  • 1:02 mullets FTW

  • lol i still have my NES. its still playable with those "duck" gun. tho the actual games sometimes dont work.

  • Thanks, IGN, thanks for making me feel old.

  • How dare they not mention Contra.

  • Does anyone know what shirt craig harris, executive editor is wearing

  • DOS GAMES. thank you.

  • lolz

  • 80's ftw.

    games, films, music.

  • I still have the sega genesis and NES

  • @iPawdTouch NES is boss

  • same here, i still have my intellivision, coleco vision and commodor 64, boxes and everything.... god im a nerd

  • Lol, it showed xwing vs tie fighter...was that really from the 80s ? I actually played it when i was about 11 or 12.

  • Where the hell is the comodore 64? in the rest of the world that is what we gamed on!!

  • the angry video game nerd has one ask him for it

  • He's amazing

  • Only melvins had a commodore 64, thats why.

  • the ending was rather abrupt.

  • does anyone know a documentary about video games ?

  • 00's was gaming's best decade

  • no you just killed it

go in a hole and die

  • agreed

  • lol Qbert

  • best Dos game... CRUSADER: NO REGRET!

  • Whoa, Craig Harris gained a few pounds!.

  • Anything created, born, made, discovered or associated with the 80's kicked all other decades' collective asses.

Creativity peaked during that decade. Movies, music and TV shows this very moment owe their gratitude to the 80's.
