A fundamental theme in this movie concerns the sacrifices a squad of men make in order to save one soldier. Throughout the movie, Captain Miller and his troops question their mission, and they continually try to make sense out of it
I don't get it.
Since they are fighting in a war, it doesn't matter what their mission is. Being combat soldiers in WWII, any one of them is subject to get killed at anytime - that was obvious in the opening scene of the movie. I don't get it.
@Slipgut actually, captain miller never questioned the mission. there was a line in the movie where miller says something to the extent of "i don't know this ryan, and i don't care, but if saving him earns me the right to go home and see my wife, then that's my mission". in another scene miller even goes as far as to pretend to be talking to his superiors and praises the idea of the mission (kissing ass). the only character to speak out on the mission (i think) was reiben.
@07foxmulderI do see your point; nevertheless, I still believe the squad - including Cpt. Miller - questioned the mission. Well, maybe "questioned" isn't the right word (accept in Reiben's case), but I believe the mission was a matter of concern even for Miller. Recall what the Captain said to SGT. Horvath: "He better be worth it. He better go home and cure a disease, or invent a longer-lasting light bulb..." Again, why are they taking issue with their mission? It's a war!
@Slipgut well played lol i forgot about that line. i guess there could be arguments from both ends; which is what makes the movie so great. i guess the issue that each character could have is that the army is sending 8 (?) soldiers to save the life of 1. it's not like another platoon is in need of assistance. then again, people are going to question their superior's orders no matter what. human nature.
@07foxmulder Indeed, but my point of contention is this: they are all fighting in a war. Even if they weren't on the mission to save Ryan, there's a good chance some of them would end up being killed on some other sortie.. Hell, a soldier might be taking a crap somewhere behind enemy lines and catch some shrapnel in the brain while doing it. Such as it is, why should Miller's squad elicit so much concern in regards to risking their lives for the sake of one soldier?
@dionusos2 Not in this war. See any buffalo soldiers in this movie? Nope most of them where transferred to rear echelon duties and if they were fighting there was no mixed units. Just like the Japanese and Hispanic groups.
@dionusos2 yep the faught for a free world where you can have a laugh and a joke instead of kill joys like you making the world unbearably serious and boring its no good not making a joke about someone because of colour or nationality otherwise they would feel different like your trying to hard not to upset them which would make things awkward its ok to make jokes as long as there jokes start going on about a superior race then its to far ...............peace out

An Englishman, Frenchman, Mexican, and Texan were flying on a small plane when the pilot says " the only way we can make it to the next airport is for 3 of you to jump out". The four open the door and look out below. The Englishman takes a deep breath and hollers "God Save The Queen" and jumps. The Frenchman gets really inspired and hollers "Viva La France" and he also jumps. This really pumps up the Texan so he hollers "Remember the Alamo" andthrows the Mexican out of the plane.
@KaningLamigin he's talking about the wimpy translator guy in the movie who sat back and didn't do shit until the very end where he captured those germans and executed that one piece of shit
One thing I don't get about this movie, other than the butload of inaccuracies and german zombies being mowed down like retards, is the "moral of the story" when Upham grows a pair, takes prisoners, and then shows his manliness by killing an unarmed man with his hands in the air.

@hellomotto37 Juno would have been the second most heavily defended beach after Omaha! However the Canadians did have to contend with a seawall twice the size of the one at Omaha. If you couple that with some very strong defensive positions then Juno was still a really tough objective to take. More men were lost at Omaha but casualties on Juno were still quite high I think!
As a "baby boomer" a veteran and a son of a hero who fought in the Battle of the Bulge I don't understand your comment....Mr. LOL... could you elaborate? Dumb Ass...no response necessary.
My dad was on Omaha Beach, Easy red 2 sector and was riddled with shrapnel and never made it off the beach until they evacced him to Cirencester UK. Most of the kids with him died. He was 19. His beach was easy red 2, omaha.. Hes gone to Normandy and just cried and cried. Hes 85 years old and was only recently able to take returning there
@algerianhistory Wow!! Your father must have seen hell on Omaha beach. My grandmother had two uncles who were also at Omaha beach and after all was said and done they never spoke a word about the battle to anyone again. And who could blame them, something like war seen through their eyes could never be interpreted to anyone who has never seen war. It is men like your father and so many others who served in our military that keep this country safe from evil, and I'd like to say Thank you!
@AshuraShadow8 his experience shaped my life and my understanding of world war 2. I am 44, he is 85 so i got to grow up with a completely different perspective of life and love and loss because of what he saw at normandy
My father still is living and he was on easy red 2 on Omaha Beach in the second landing invasion. He is 85. He won the french cross. He is the last of the survivors
@algerianhistory Think about what you just said. Omaha beach was an American beach landing zone for Operation Overlord. Explain to me how he got the french cross. There were no french soldiers in the entire invasion of normandy. There were American, Canadian, and British soldiers. America had Utah and Omaha, while Britian had Juno and Gold, and Canada had Sword.
@xZxshadowghostxZ ez red two. He was an American Navy medic attached to the US Army. He is AMERICAN. If you watch the news, the French government has been awarding Normandy soldiers something called the chevailier because most of the men are dead now. They are doing it post humously. My dad is still living and is leaving for France on June 3rd. I am 44. He is 85. What exactly are you questioning. He was on teh easy red 2 beach and I have actually been there
My father is 85 years old. He was a navy medic attached to the US Army. What exactly are you questioning. He was not french .. The French Government has been awarding Normandy Soldiers the chevalier for the last few years...I am 44 . My dad is the veteran. I have actually been to easy red two the beach he landed on and stood there.. Omaha is divided into sectors.. Easy red was one of them
@xZxshadowghostxZ What are you questioning exactly? My dad was awarded the chevalier by the French Embassy in Miami last year for his service in Normandy. He is 85 years old. He landed on Omaha, easy red 2 and he is still alive and will leave for France next week.
Every time I watch this movie I look at my grandfathers Bronze Star and Pacific Campaign medal and wonder if he witnessed things like this. He would never speak of the war to any of his grand kids. Looking back as an adult I think it would have been unbearable for him to explain what Hell is like to a child.
There are many war movies but none has ever affected me so much as this one & the cast were splendid. The last scene ends with Gen. George Marshall reading that Abraham Lincoln letter & with Ryan fast forwarding to the present time at the burial site of the soldier who made it possible for him to come home safely to his mother who already had lost 4 other sons to that horiffic war. Thank u for posting this video & it's a movie I own & one of my trophies in that collection, 1001 **** 's for you!!
It looks like the guy with the B.A.R. was one of the few survivors, besides Ryan and Upham. I guess carrying that gun around makes ya last longer than an M1.......
that mother fucker crouching with full machine gun ammo and a rifle when he coulda takin out 7 Nazi's lined up with one bullet made me SCREAM AT THE FUCKIN MONITOR SHOOT U FUCK GOD DAMN PUSSY FUCKKKKKKKKKKK
A soldier died in the field of battle and came up to the gates of heaven, where he met God. He said to God," Lord, I know I did many things i ain't proud of, and many more that you won't approve of, so if you send me to hell, I won't argue." God stood there for a moment, and then turned to the gatekeeper of heaven. "Let him in", he said.? The gatekeeper, confused, asked why. God looked down at the soldier and said," This man just came from hell."
now I hate Ryan the coolest guys died because of him :/ what a fag I just watched the movie it's a masterpiece but I still hate it nearly everyone died >:(
@0900090990 that's the point idiot, the reason that all the other soilders died was to save him, because the people in charge wanted to help the mother who was also suffering from war.
No, son, it's like this... Daddy Bush gets rich on oil he sells to the Nazis who are killing your children in a war the US was bullied into through a false-flag attack.
@d3ejmz No, i wasn't talking about real life "son". I was talking to this guy who said something dumb about the movie like," i love this movie but i hate ryan because he made tom hanks and all the other squad mates die!" You can tell he didn't pay attention to the movie and was only looking forward to the parts where everyone blows up. So please, look at the conversation a bit more carefully before implying that i'm some redneck who thinks that the USA shouldn't be questioned in the slightest!
@kickflipinyaface well i didn't say it was YOUR propaganda. Did you make the film? Ease up dude. the 'son' was a joke. thought anyone could see that. My bad!
@gdgarza I'd of liked to see the last 30 minutes or so changed with fewer of our guys dying, of course, and with Upham taking out all those Krauts rather than just "Steamboat WIllie" ...Of course they shoulda killed him in an earlier scene. I think in reality he'd a been a dead Nazi then and there...
@mowriter I agree in many ways. Though what SOME of them did to bring desegregation was as gutsy as going to war, especially in areas where even white men could be lynched if they shook up the ethnic status quo. Other than that though, they did do many cowardly and self-destructive things
@fosterkid117 : You mean GRANDKIDS who jumped on grenades. A few of their kids did the same in Vietnam, but many seemed to instead to burn American flags, get high, completely abandon their parents paradigm, and generally behaved like spoiled brats.
Thank you to all the soldiers who refused to fight. On both sides. Maybe someday, we, as a great world, will realize that killing and dying for the rich and powerful is just idiotic, as this movie points out so clearly.
@VanishingDigital yes, WWII soldiers actually had something worth fighting for, soldiers today are fighting to try and sort out some middle eastern country that no one really knows the reason why we're there
What a film, groundbreaking in the war film genre. There had been some good films out there for there time in the past, such as the big red one, but this film was and still is at the very top for realism, emotion and battle scenes (along with the pacific, band of brothers and the thin red line).
The kind of movie that affected every nerve in my body andevery eomtion in my soul...watching this, no matter how often, just hits hard, as it should hit everyone who lives free in our country, regardless of its faults. Despite some of the factual critiques I've read about some of the things in this movie, I think it was great period. God bless all who were a part of making this fine movie and God bless all those who really went through this for us!
@lachybmx99 no he was the old man in the beginning and the ending of the movie with his family like 40 years later... something like that, it was tom hawks who died, and that is why the old man (Matt Damon) went the tom hanks grave shit to say he was hoping he earned tom hanks sacrifice on the bridge where tom died

It looks like the guy with the B.A.R. was one of the few survivors, besides Ryan and Upham. I guess carrying that gun around makes ya last longer than an M1.......

God looked down at the soldier and said," This man just came from hell."

now I hate Ryan the coolest guys died because of him :/ what a fag I just watched the movie it's a masterpiece but I still hate it nearly everyone died >:(
0900090990 11 months ago
@0900090990 that's the point idiot, the reason that all the other soilders died was to save him, because the people in charge wanted to help the mother who was also suffering from war.

@kickflipinyaface nice piece of propaganda, that!
d3ejmz 11 months ago
@d3ejmz what are you talking about?
kickflipinyaface 11 months ago
@kickflipinyaface "The people in charge wanted to help"
LOL!!!!!!!
No, son, it's like this... Daddy Bush gets rich on oil he sells to the Nazis who are killing your children in a war the US was bullied into through a false-flag attack.
d3ejmz 11 months ago
@d3ejmz No, i wasn't talking about real life "son". I was talking to this guy who said something dumb about the movie like," i love this movie but i hate ryan because he made tom hanks and all the other squad mates die!" You can tell he didn't pay attention to the movie and was only looking forward to the parts where everyone blows up. So please, look at the conversation a bit more carefully before implying that i'm some redneck who thinks that the USA shouldn't be questioned in the slightest!
kickflipinyaface 11 months ago
@kickflipinyaface well i didn't say it was YOUR propaganda. Did you make the film? Ease up dude. the 'son' was a joke. thought anyone could see that. My bad!

y do the good people have 2 die in the end :(
gdgarza 1 year ago
@gdgarza I'd of liked to see the last 30 minutes or so changed with fewer of our guys dying, of course, and with Upham taking out all those Krauts rather than just "Steamboat WIllie" ...Of course they shoulda killed him in an earlier scene. I think in reality he'd a been a dead Nazi then and there...

How in hell did this Generation of Heroes produce the baby boomers?! (LOL).
mowriter 1 year ago 19
@mowriter I agree in many ways. Though what SOME of them did to bring desegregation was as gutsy as going to war, especially in areas where even white men could be lynched if they shook up the ethnic status quo. Other than that though, they did do many cowardly and self-destructive things
motherstar1 7 months ago
@mowriter you mean how the hell did this generation of heroes produce kids who jumped on grenades in Iraq and Afghanistan?
fosterkid117 7 months ago
@fosterkid117 : You mean GRANDKIDS who jumped on grenades. A few of their kids did the same in Vietnam, but many seemed to instead to burn American flags, get high, completely abandon their parents paradigm, and generally behaved like spoiled brats.

Thank you to all the soldiers who refused to fight. On both sides. Maybe someday, we, as a great world, will realize that killing and dying for the rich and powerful is just idiotic, as this movie points out so clearly.

WWII soldiers are way more "heroes" than todays soldiers, if that even makes sense lol

God bless all who were a part of making this fine movie and God bless all those who really went through this for us!

lachybmx99 1 year ago
@lachybmx99 no he was the old man in the beginning and the ending of the movie with his family like 40 years later... something like that, it was tom hawks who died, and that is why the old man (Matt Damon) went the tom hanks grave shit to say he was hoping he earned tom hanks sacrifice on the bridge where tom died
