I love this part cause she acctually had a perfect smile on her face and acctually looks happy . The beginning made me cry . Im watching this movie in financial literacy class i school , but i was crying it made me sad that this little girl went through that and ha to take care of herself be a grown up at the age of 8 thats when she got a job . Well all i got to say is if she can get through that with no one cause she didnt have anyone helping her , than we of course can get through anything .
Its unfortunate, even though Liz endured through hellish conditions, its nothing compared to what children in the third world have to struggle through
thats so true. children in the third world such as girls are forced into being a child bride. there chance of ever succeeding and making something of their life is slim to nothing, here in the USA we are blessed there are soo many opportunities and if you dont grab on to it, its nobody fault but yours, its not an eady job but peole make their way up from the bottom.
For those who can't understand the words at the end, they are in Italian, not Spanish.
The first one says Liz's father, who still has AIDS, lives in an apartment on his own.
The second one says Liz pays for her father's rent using the money she earned from her conference(for the scholarship).
The last one says Liz left Harvard in the spring of 2003, but continues to study in college. She believes that the meeting was the only way she could have the life she leads today.
@nickyinpink0324 I read that she had a touch time with the environment at Harvard and she kept taking time off from school because of her father who was dying & her speaking engagements. She did graduated from Harvard and she's in grad school I believe.
@nickyinpink0324 she transferred to Colombia University in NY to attend to her sick father, after his death, she transferred back to Harvard and finished her education...
Maren Ord is the artist of "Perfect" which is the song as Liz is walking up to the lecture hall :) She is also the artist at the beginning of the film, the song "Just Like You"

Thanku, was difficult, when you are wealthy you cannt let guard down beware of whoreal friends are, ie, my closest 14 friends 14 trustfunds (280 grand total) when I had a couple of mill and that was all of their birthdays, xmas', wedding presents, bachelor gifts in one go - theypaid off homes and some have been able to afford more kids - i dont buy for any of them , they accept that, and they always bring me along free of charge - remember quality not quantity, in finance and friendship
she was an alcoholic. i moved to many apartments, and even shelters.i never went to school.i was only 5 years old, and my family, even cops searched for me. they never found me.i was living with my mother in a shelter.i am now 13, and living with my father and have been for many years and now have a life that every one deserves.but my mother has been dead for a few months.she was only 45.but i am more than greatfull to be living the life i am now,and having survived the life i used to live.
My advise : stay positive and Healthy - replace junk food with health food - save money boost esteme - excercise and sleep regulary - have a friend - for 3 months I had only a three legged stray dog I fed I called him rusty - but most all, DO NOT DO ALCOHOL! DO NOT DO DRUGS! I saw money and men wasted away on these things - alcohol costs money and its used as a crutch, its tempation in a bad way - its unhealthy & dehydrates you -drink water instead and milk for calcium and be open about problems
@AustralianWild I have 3 brothers that are alcoholics and I'm the only girl in my family. Luckily for me, I don't have a substance dependency. I used to toy with sleeping pills years ago. Now, I am proud to say that I no longer even drink socially. Cigarettes gross me out and alcohol makes my stomach turn. I don't understand how people can like it. To me it smells and tastes revolting.
I was homeless once, by choice because rent in Australia is Fucking ridiculous, you learn about yourself and what you are capable of - it brought out the best in me living in my car, drinking rain water while i worked and swapping stories with aborigines who lived that way full time, I worked hard on the mines, bought properites and the realestate skyrocketed - I'm now a millionare and Ive seeen the world on a budget - but I will never forget: starving/tempation to give up, i am 27
@Cleo0ful yes, but take it from from me, money will make you safe and secure it brings you happiness to a degree of comfort zone, HUGE self confidence and liberation to acheieve goals and interests. I have over 11 million but I saw the world on only 300,000 total, I did Kumuka, Tucan and Gecko Overland and self Tours, sleepining in a vehicle and camping - and LOVED IT!
I worked in the mines from 16 to 25, living in a van, I suffered and I suceeded - I invested into property those workmates who-
@Cleo0ful -teased me and wasted so much money on booze are now living in my houses paying me rent
I bare them no grudges - 9 years of work and less games, I would travep south to see friends from time to time - some say thats the best years of my life - but I am living it up now sensibly - I never have to work full time again, now I volenteer and travel, I create artwork and attend festivals round the world, I live an upper-middle class lifestyle, i will go into space on Virgins Galaxy
@Cleo0ful But Values are what is most important, I have security for my family of the future, I donate thousands to Orangutans and Gorillas and Koalas and WWF, I gave my closest friends trustfunds for their future kids future education, you can do it too.
Money=security and esteme / Values = Happiness
NEVER confuse the two - these days we must work for money then ourselves, in the next 50 yrs there will be a different world with climate change we need to be prepared, against poverty/crime
why can't we do it? i think she was always smart that's why she made it... most of us are dumb and don't have a good brain..it's not our fault but it's not an excuse either. i wish i could have the willpower to overcome.....
@KingDcome11 psssh. you are not born stupid. the reason that some people are is because they dont try hard enough. they give up-the people who are "smart" just dedicate more time and effort int what they do-for example, studying. people always say asians are smart because they were born that way-that is BS. i stay at home and study my butt off so i can maintain a high GPA, get straight As and be in Honors and AP classes. i am not smart. You can do it; you just need to put in the effort.
This movie is a good movie and everything but what the hell is up with the text at the end of the movie being in Spanish? Like the whole movie is in English and then the text is Spanish! This does not make since.
@Elmoshadow I don't really care what other language it is, my point is that it is not English when the whole movie is in English. You would think that since it is an English movie the words would be in English as well.
this movie is really inspiring. It makes you really wake up and realize what you have and that you can do better and get further in life rather than feeling sorry for yourself and dwelling on the past. I would defanetly reccommend this movie! :)
Liz Murray eventually returned to Harvard in 2006 and graduated in June 2009. As of August 2009, she had begun taking graduate courses at Harvard Summer School and would like to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology.
This movie is amazing by far. You sit back & watch this young girl go through life like this. Should make everybody appreciate the people & things they have ALOT more. Great movie
Thanks to lucianparkour for uploading this wonderful video.
If you liked this movie, you may also like Liz Murray's biography too. The book is called "Breaking Night" and you will find out that Liz actually went through a lot more than this movie could tell us.
You will find out a lot more about her childhood, her parents, and what she went through in her homeless days.
Good Film. Shame about her friend, she tried hard to get her (friend) into school as well and the only thing stopping her friend was her really bad attitude. Anyone know what happened to her friend? did she leave her behind?
This film deviates from Liz's real story so much it's almost fiction. Her book: Breaking Night is so much better than this and so much more inspirational. I highly recommend it. I'm sure she was involved to a degree with the movie, but it really doesn't do her story justice at all!
Thank you soooo much for uploading this movie!!!! I will need to work really hard at school to get where I want to be and this movie, her story is my inspiration. I am lucky yo have a family and a home I will not take that for granted... Whenever I get discourage with school in life I will watch this movie so I can remind myself that I can do it, that I HAVE to do it. Lol later on when I have kids I will even make them watch it.... Again thank you!!! ;)
chris reminds me alot of my coulleuges at school. they're so jealous of me because i study and they choose to play around. at the end of each semester they try to befriend me with their sweet talk so that they could get me to help them cheat. i hate people like that
@Q8BKman Yes and there will always, always be people who will want to steal from you, which is what cheating is. They won't like or respect you for it either. They won't care if you get caught and that all your hard work could go down the drain. I saw it happen in college. Two guys. One wrote a one page paper for a class and he let a "friend" copy it. They got caught. Both were asked to leave and never come back. It went on their records forever. The poor parents. Keep being strong Q!
The reason there is a movie about her is because she is one of the few exceptions. She deviates from the statistical mean for her social class.
Almost every story about success is about a person that had some undeveloped natural potential/talent . For example she was clever (good and responsive memory). What is your talent? If you are like me(average at everything) then you have to redefine what success would mean to you.
Only those with exceptional natural talent make big leaps ... sometimes.
finally a movie that isnt just about following your dreams, its about overcoming everything that pulls you down, about realising that there's always tomorow. its a shame homeless people won't be able to see this movie; but if they just follow their heart & believe in themselves, they could change their whole lives around.& before it's too late take that one leap of faith toward something that matters. liz was homeles because a home isnt just a house; its a place where youl always find happiness.
i love this movie im am so grateful for the things i have people should watch this movie i was so emotional it got me thinking a lot about how my life will end up if i was homeless or if my parents were like hers but this movie teaches everyone about the values of life and that its never hard to achieve your goals or what you want in life this is a great ass movie
@javeriayasini her sister was having issues with her vision due to hereditary. some things - both good and bad - are passed from parent to child because of genes.
EVERYONE IN PUBLIC SCHOOL SHOULD BE MADE TO WATCH THIS THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL EVERY YEAR BEGINING WITH THE 7TH GRADE UNTIL THIER FINAL YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL..............VERY VERY INSPIRING.
"FORCED TO LOOK FORWARD,THERE WAS NO GOING BACK" "SO I'LL WORK HARD AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS"
@YourDruqqNaiix3 lol first of all it's italian not spanish, and it means "Liz's father beat Aids and he now lives in an apartment. Chris has a steady job and remains a good friend of Liz. Liz pays her rent with the money she got from the conference. Liz left Harvard in the spring of 2003. She continued her studies in College. "
Her story is even more dramatic than mine. I was in similar situation, living in a similar neighborhood with similar friends, but at least I wasn't homeless. I had my mom with me all the time. I went on to attend engineering schools in Berkeley and later Standford . I'm so proud of her, and wish more people could be like us!!!
@jtcra555 There are others like the two of you, quietly making their way ahead in the world. You sharing your story, just like she did, is what is needed by those of us who are going through similar situations. You two did it, which is what will help others to hold on to this life, when it seems like there's no reason to or anything to hold on to.
That was the most moving wonderful story ever made but im kind of mad it didnt tell u what happend to the sister But it was very very good Thank You For Posting It.!!!!!
i ♥ this movie cuz it teaches u tht there is always something to look foward even though ur life has to much obstacles,u can always get through them n fight for something even better..truly an inspiration..thnkx alot 4 posting..
It makes me want to go back to school, I thought that being a young single mom and living off of a high school education was enough but this story makes me realize how much more there is to having an education and looking forward towards the future. A future for me and for my daughter.
It really inspires me a lot. It makes me think that my life is much better than her. I thought I worked hard in school now, but I didnt. Thank you for uploading this video, I will try my best to succedd, because I have the chance to do so.
@pleased9 Well, I guess thats where the reality kicks in, visually, it speaks to the eye better, and an average northerner happens to be similar to what we see up there.
Other than that, great story, this was the third time I watch it, and i feel inspired..
italian language... it says that Liz, with the money gained from her work place, took an appartment, then, that her father has a house from the gouverment, and he live alone, that Liz's best girlfriend accepted to come to school, and now she is working, i dunno, another guy ask me the same thing.. u shoud check all the comments, sorry about my bad english
In case you haven't found out yet: It said she got a steady job and an apt. of her own and she and Liz still keep in touch...seen this movie a million times lol
this was a good story

@javeriayasini her sister was having issues with her vision due to hereditary. some things - both good and bad - are passed from parent to child because of genes.

paotez 1 year ago
@paotez Liz's father did NOT beat aids, he died in 2006

Her story is even more dramatic than mine. I was in similar situation, living in a similar neighborhood with similar friends, but at least I wasn't homeless. I had my mom with me all the time. I went on to attend engineering schools in Berkeley and later Standford . I'm so proud of her, and wish more people could be like us!!!
jtcra555 1 year ago
@jtcra555 There are others like the two of you, quietly making their way ahead in the world. You sharing your story, just like she did, is what is needed by those of us who are going through similar situations. You two did it, which is what will help others to hold on to this life, when it seems like there's no reason to or anything to hold on to.

It makes me want to go back to school, I thought that being a young single mom and living off of a high school education was enough but this story makes me realize how much more there is to having an education and looking forward towards the future. A future for me and for my daughter.

@MultiNMJ Since this film came out in 2003, Thora Birch should be 20-21 at that time.

I wish the character who portrayed Liz was Not the stereotypical blond and blue eyed.

@pleased9 she was ginger
and i dont think it would have made any difference
julianbinder123 1 year ago
@pleased9 Well, I guess thats where the reality kicks in, visually, it speaks to the eye better, and an average northerner happens to be similar to what we see up there.
Other than that, great story, this was the third time I watch it, and i feel inspired..
