this has got to be deep purples worst concert thanks for uploading the video but seriously blackmores playing sucks here same as gillans singing even the last deep purple concert from the 1993 concert come hell or high water was better than this deep purple were always best in the 70,s in my opinion
Blackmore's just playing a bunch of shit, totally hogging the show... Gillan's absolutely dreadful.. you've got to feel sorry for him. What was the point of this period?
Greatest 1st concert @ 15, never to forget... Had to see the show again, as if I forgot. It was a hell of a reality check. Miss the old Arena shows!!!!
I know Gillan lost his voice after recording the album 'Mr Universe' with his band, such a shame...but he still continued to do great albums with Purple
WOOOOWWWW. Amazing download. Saw them live in Germany in 1971. Very, VERY stoned times were that I can tell you........we always made 'competitions' with GI's who could smoke some more dope. HAHAHHA. = With love from St. Petersburg / Russia, Paul
I wore through two vhs tapes of this show and saw them twice on this tour...this is the quintisential lineup. I love Mk3 era as well...but this IS Deep Purple.
Blackmore, sorry, the acoustics are good, I love Made in Japan but I really liked this album, it was a comeback album, a more modern thematic album with kool moods and edgy sounds
Inspite of that what I wrote here - have a look on the video with Rainbow in Munich live 1977, a great Blackmore here now, strong playing with full power. I think he had his best times in the 70´s and in the first Rainbow years he really showed who the master is.
Blackmore really is a great guitarist, but I often wonder what the hell is doing sometimes. What I mean is for example the first solo at "Nobody´s home"- it´s only noise and has nothing to do with a good solo. But that´s what I wondered often also when I saw him live - with Rainbow or Purple. Well, most people reflect on their guitar their personality - and there is no question about him as being a strange guy. But in spite of that he also had a great influence on my guitar playing.
@kohlaml Good point - these years, espacially late rainbow years (Turner era), were his least melodic on solos, but aside from that he is the melody king. He slowed down his play much when Gillan and Glover came and turned more into melodic play, but here he plays damn quick again - some people may like it but it is my least favourite era. Love his play around machine head times, or Dio, Bonnet eras Rainbow. Saw him play live 2 or 3 years ago with Night and he is still wonderfully melodic.
It shows that you don't need to fuckin dance or do crazy shit on stage to amaze the audience! Music speaks for itself! Not makeup, fireworks or some other stupid things.
Thank you so much, great sound quality and picture of the original WDR broadcast. When Rockpalast broadcasted this originally in 1985 they made us wait til about 2 am because that dwarf Prince was also live in concert. I was a little dissapointed about the state of Gillan's voice back then, but never mind eh? I think he ruined it on that notorious Black Sabbath Born Again Tour where he did a great job.
The band are all playing well but sadly Gillan's vocals just aren't up to scatch. After seeing this and some other uploads from the '80s I can understand Blackmore's frustration with Gillan.
@trapone100 Band frictions, off days , egos etc Paice and Lord have never played a bad gig to my knowledge Gillans scream is a whisper ! nice to see all the same.agree.
I was disappointed when i first watched this show on TV. Gillan had a very bad day, Ritchie was not playing good either ... I saw them on the open air in Mannheim (Germany) same year in a much better shape! Anyway ... i was glad to see their come back live after having been a fan since years. PURPLE rules!!!
Blackmore is kinda struggling here... wow

@staernpeder Have you seen the video concert with Ritchie and Rainbow? 1995?
Rockpalast. Excellent. Ritchie was really in the pocket all night. What a fantastic show.
The torrent is way better than the one on Y.T. Way better picture; sound is much the same as what's on Y.T.

@kohlaml He's an emotional player and noise is part of his dynamic.

@kohlaml You're right, Blackmore is so far from a page in terms of improvisation, clarity in ideas and lyricism ...
