Es preciso remontarnos a dicha época para poder emitir un juicio razonable: tanto Pasta como Malibrán poseían un tipo especial de voz al que se le denominó "soprano sfogato", con graves muy sonoros (como los de una mezzo) y facilidad para la coloratura. Aquí Bartoli, luego de estudiar minuciosamente la historia del personaje, nos ofrece una versión muy apegada a su origen.

All these arguements are just silly. EVERYONE has their own opinion of music, that's why there are so many versions and genres of music. We people click on artists they don't like and make such negative comments is beyond me. For me PERSONALLY, this is the best version of this piece I have heard. This being one of my favorites I am constantly listening to different renditions. If this isn't how it is written, it is how it should have been. I am sure Bellini would have been enthralled.
I often think of what it would be like to be Cecilia as she's singing. she talks so much in interviews about having this "freedom of the voice." I can only imagine! this is pristine!

@ranigema Ormai considerano i compositori italiani, soprattutto i veristi, alla stregua dei musicisti pop e jazz !! A me piace moltissimo il jazz, ma addirittura stravolgere le opere con delle improvvisazioni che escono dai canoni operistici, è davvero folle e uccide la cultura del belcanto italiano, e le sue tradizioni. Pensano che così un'opera sia più orecchiabile e commerciale e in effetti la Bartoli vende tantissimo, ma vende a un pubblico che non conosce la vera Opera italiana.
@ranigema Ma di nulla, grazie a lei signora di apprezzare l'opera italiana. Gli estimatori ed esperti nel campo sono rimasti pochi, soprattutto in Europa ahimé... Io studio musica classica da quando avevo 11 anni, sono soprano lirico, ma devo ancora finire il conservatorio perché la mia salute mi ha creato tantissimi ostacoli e danni alle corde vocali. E' stata una vera tortura stare lontana dalla lirica, poi tornare dopo tanto tempo, e scoprire che moltissimi la considerano noiosa.
PAragonare la Bartoli ad un qualsiasi soprano è un'operazione che non ha senso. Ma basta prendere una esemplare professionista come la Frederica Von Stade per comprendere che la Bartoli non ha le capacità per cantare... la sonnambula. Il confronto è impietoso.
her dress is a little tight.... though she still sounds wonderul, i'm wondering if it is having an adverse effect on her breath support.... some voice teachers have singers wear them tight FOR resistance, but i've never seen her wear one before.
The cadenza of the aria is terribly sung... any simple grupetto turns into "happy throat coloratura"....to much fun for her, to little for the listener, to much "show", to much superficiality, ..... the cabaletta is not good either, the orchestra goes bananas between the 2 verses, and so does she, the ornamentation is a disaster and has nothing to do with Amina nor Bellini. Bad taste, to much hedonism, to little art...Pity, because she really has talent.

Sorry if I disappointed anyone, but I have my opinion and I hope you will read this and will agree in your heart. Classical music is sacred and should not be popularized by going apart from composer's idea.
Showing where the breaks in the voice are. I don't think makes this piece more beautiful, but is overdone and too heavy with ornamentation. We wear one kind of jewelry with a single dress, this is like wearing 5-6 different kinds which is a matter of taste. I think no one went close to Adelina Patti, and I prefer simplicity in professionalism.
I am not trying to be rude, but I think there are several rules that have been violated in interpretation of this particular piece, such as the rhythm in which composer wrote it. Her rhythm as well as many notes are just not on time, thus harmony underneath is all messed up, too mushy. I could guess what she wants to express, which is not bad, but it is overdone. The piece lost its structure, its wholeness should I say. The tempos are wrong at cadenza and it is Not composer's intention.

This was great, but confusing to me. My favorite Amina is Dessay in the Zimmerman production at the Met with Florez. So how can this be. Dessay certainly is not a Mezzo, Bartoli was sure full, rich Mezzo in this. In other ways this performance was not very usual, but they can do that in recitals. I loved this and the audience seemed quite pleased. I see 09avenger and serenaluce used up most of this page of comments doing their usual bile and vitriol thing.
Well, Bartolli's technique isn't perfect, but it's really very good when compared to current sopranos. Judging quality of a soprano by virtue of her facial expression is really interesting approach.
Oh my God...the laugh was so refreshing...there is only one problem: Ah non credea mirarti wasn't supposed to be a comic piece. Anything but Malibran: Bartoli is the new Buster Keaton! LOL!

But then, as much as I respect her, I do understand how another person might consider this barqoue approach to 19th century bel canto tasteless as well. Anyway, I love that Bartoli gives us a glimpse to a type of singing from earlier eras that we otherwise would have no idea about. She is a cultural treasure.
She is taking liberties with the tempo, but this is generally allowed with bel canto. the emotion is genuine though, and that matters a lot here and 'makes up' for the change in tempo.
It's a big low when singers who take their art seriously are being labeled pretentious and superficial. I guess the hyped up, production-oriented, sensation-seeking opera scene today is making real artistry alien to audiences used to sound-byte, sex-oriented, reality show dramatics that has overtaken opera.

She is really a great talent. But still can`t even be placed somewhere near Callas , or the other great divas of the previous century - Tebaldi, Shwarzkopf, and - even Birgit Nilsson... She IS a VERY gifted musician, and (I suppose) a nice character, with charming appearance and manners. But I`m not charmed by all that, her phenomenal singing - strangely enough- is almost irritating for me. And still - I feel respect for her, she IS a true artist, she is not Netrebko.
So beautifully crafted and completely captivating and moving... I think her deep interest in the history of this music and its performance give her solid ground on which to build her sensitive and moving interpretations - and what fun she has with Ah Non Guinge... the ornamentation is supposedly as sung by Malibran and it brings the opera to a wonderful happy end. A great lady giving a great performance and isn't that the joy of Opera
I actually like this performance very much. It is so very different from Callas and other sopranos of the old school, but Bartoli manages to make the role her very own. Very good and interesting job!
@callasadmirer she doesnt stay in "character". She "conducts" the melody with her body languge. Which apparently is acceptable in the baroque style( of which i have little stylistic knowledge of so i dont know the reason why....) But this is not the fashion of the bel canto opera. Her tone is gorgeous as usual though
many people get very impressed by the high notes. Such as the classic "soprano high C" or the high E or, in case of a very gifted coloratura soprano, such as Natalie Dessay, even above them, to a high F6, G-G#6 or even A....but personally, i also find the low notes very impressive as well. This mezzo soprano here, the amazing Bartoli, gave an example of what only a mezzo soprano can do and i liked it a lot :) Joyce Didonato is also a magnificent mezzo-soprano.
She is not in her element here. She doesn't have the voice or musical style to give the Bel canto repertoire the life that artists such as Patti, Melba, Tetrazzini, Callas, Sutherland, or Anderson could (can).

@ranigema Ormai considerano i compositori italiani, soprattutto i veristi, alla stregua dei musicisti pop e jazz !! A me piace moltissimo il jazz, ma addirittura stravolgere le opere con delle improvvisazioni che escono dai canoni operistici, è davvero folle e uccide la cultura del belcanto italiano, e le sue tradizioni. Pensano che così un'opera sia più orecchiabile e commerciale e in effetti la Bartoli vende tantissimo, ma vende a un pubblico che non conosce la vera Opera italiana.

@ranigema Ma di nulla, grazie a lei signora di apprezzare l'opera italiana. Gli estimatori ed esperti nel campo sono rimasti pochi, soprattutto in Europa ahimé... Io studio musica classica da quando avevo 11 anni, sono soprano lirico, ma devo ancora finire il conservatorio perché la mia salute mi ha creato tantissimi ostacoli e danni alle corde vocali. E' stata una vera tortura stare lontana dalla lirica, poi tornare dopo tanto tempo, e scoprire che moltissimi la considerano noiosa.

The cadenza of the aria is terribly sung... any simple grupetto turns into "happy throat coloratura"....to much fun for her, to little for the listener, to much "show", to much superficiality, ..... the cabaletta is not good either, the orchestra goes bananas between the 2 verses, and so does she, the ornamentation is a disaster and has nothing to do with Amina nor Bellini. Bad taste, to much hedonism, to little art...Pity, because she really has talent.

Quello che le volevo dire e che trovo veramente triste che un tale telento come la Bartoli sia piu' apprezzata all'estero (e come se lo e'..)che nella sua stessa patria. Peccato. In Francia e' amatissima, In Austria, apprezzatissima, In america e' quasi un'idolo ed in Spagna, adorata. Ma cosa si puo' voler di piu' dalla vita? Le auguro ancora una splendida giorna!!

Showing where the breaks in the voice are. I don't think makes this piece more beautiful, but is overdone and too heavy with ornamentation. We wear one kind of jewelry with a single dress, this is like wearing 5-6 different kinds which is a matter of taste. I think no one went close to Adelina Patti, and I prefer simplicity in professionalism.

I am not trying to be rude, but I think there are several rules that have been violated in interpretation of this particular piece, such as the rhythm in which composer wrote it. Her rhythm as well as many notes are just not on time, thus harmony underneath is all messed up, too mushy. I could guess what she wants to express, which is not bad, but it is overdone. The piece lost its structure, its wholeness should I say. The tempos are wrong at cadenza and it is Not composer's intention.

This was great, but confusing to me. My favorite Amina is Dessay in the Zimmerman production at the Met with Florez. So how can this be. Dessay certainly is not a Mezzo, Bartoli was sure full, rich Mezzo in this. In other ways this performance was not very usual, but they can do that in recitals. I loved this and the audience seemed quite pleased. I see 09avenger and serenaluce used up most of this page of comments doing their usual bile and vitriol thing.

Well, Bartolli's technique isn't perfect, but it's really very good when compared to current sopranos. Judging quality of a soprano by virtue of her facial expression is really interesting approach.

The first part is way to slow - Is the orchestra half asleep? What is going on ??? !!! Bartoli always sounds so artificial and pretentious. The second part is just unbearable, - where is the music? Her ugly vocal expressions are tasteless, as usual. Poor Bellini! These are my favorite pieces and she just ruined everything.

I can't imagine how such a beautiful music can cause such ugly monkey grimaces, such awful curling of her lips? Anyway, I love that Bartoli gives us a glimpse to a type of singing from earlier eras that we otherwise would have no idea about. She is a cultural treasure.

She is taking liberties with the tempo, but this is generally allowed with bel canto. the emotion is genuine though, and that matters a lot here and 'makes up' for the change in tempo.

It's a big low when singers who take their art seriously are being labeled pretentious and superficial. I guess the hyped up, production-oriented, sensation-seeking opera scene today is making real artistry alien to audiences used to sound-byte, sex-oriented, reality show dramatics that has overtaken opera.

just one thing, she's great, and NOBODY can denny that, no matter what they say. my teacher is very honest, when she doesn't like a singer she just say "I don't like her for ****** ", but she never say "that's an awful singer". :P i love cecilia >.<

If she only stopped listening to all this nonsense that she is a GODDESS! Such grimaces are not for an opera diva! Her place is only in the Zoo in the same cage with monkeys! Shame on her! It's profanation of opera! Also awful technique of a clucking hen! Ugly, ugly singing! I guess that people who praise her don't care about any beauty anymore! For them it's enough just to be excited from ugly vocal acrobatic without any soul! But there should be more in singing then just vocal tricks!

@serenaluce As a matter of fact I wouldn't like to leave negative comment about Cecilia, but every time when I try to listen to her for understanding her craft I have a sudden terrible headache, and the only therapy for me is to listen to Maria Callas as soon as possible.

@spqrmor I agree with you. I was also only trying again to listen to her more to understand why she is so popular and what's so special in her. But every time I'm just shocked by her ugly manners and can't understand how such beautiful music of BELCANTO which means BEAUTIFUL SINGING can cause such UGLY GRIMACES especially in a woman! For me also the best therapy and to relieve my headache after such an experience is to listen to either of 2 versions of the aria I found on YT sung by MARIA CALLAS

It's a beauty of YT that people can share OPINIONS about different renditions and artists. I only comment on what she does ON STAGE! But I have a different preference - for me in singing the main thing is BEAUTY and sharing an artist's SOUL! And I find Bartoli's singing UGLY with ugly LOW NOTES too like a MAN's and ugly grimaces. She is really a great talent. But still can`t even be placed somewhere near Callas , or the other great divas of the previous century - Tebaldi, Shwarzkopf, and - even Birgit Nilsson... She IS a VERY gifted musician, and (I suppose) a nice character, with charming appearance and manners. But I`m not charmed by all that, her phenomenal singing - strangely enough- is almost irritating for me. And still - I feel respect for her, she IS a true artist, she is not Netrebko.

So beautifully crafted and completely captivating and moving... I think her deep interest in the history of this music and its performance give her solid ground on which to build her sensitive and moving interpretations - and what fun she has with Ah Non Guinge... the ornamentation is supposedly as sung by Malibran and it brings the opera to a wonderful happy end. A great lady giving a great performance and isn't that the joy of Opera

I actually like this performance very much. It is so very different from Callas and other sopranos of the old school, but Bartoli manages to make the role her very own. Very good and interesting job!

@callasadmirer she doesnt stay in "character". She "conducts" the melody with her body languge. Which apparently is acceptable in the baroque style( of which i have little stylistic knowledge of so i dont know the reason why....) But this is not the fashion of the bel canto opera. Her tone is gorgeous as usual though

many people get very impressed by the high notes. Such as the classic "soprano high C" or the high E or, in case of a very gifted coloratura soprano, such as Natalie Dessay, even above them, to a high F6, G-G#6 or even A....but personally, i also find the low notes very impressive as well. This mezzo soprano here, the amazing Bartoli, gave an example of what only a mezzo soprano can do and i liked it a lot :) Joyce Didonato is also a magnificent mezzo-soprano.

She is not in her element here. She doesn't have the voice or musical style to give the Bel canto repertoire the life that artists such as Patti, Melba, Tetrazzini, Callas, Sutherland, or Anderson could (can).
