the screw problem that it might get lost is an easy problem to fix, just ask a machinist to make you a screw with a knob, so you can assemble and dis-assemble with out using a tool, a stainless material would be nice for the small project,
That is a great gun but I would rather have a .22 long rifle also. I got a great gun from rossi it is a .22 long rifle barrel with a 20 gauge barrel you can change the barrels out pretty easily with one screw witch does not need a screw driver. The cool thing about this is you cant loose the screw it breaks apart for easy carrying and you can put a survival gun in the stock witch you can find lots of videos about look at rossiusa.com if want this gun or this but with different caliber(s)
if you do put it together in the woods best not loose that little screw...might be a good idea to carry some electrical tape just in case...that's if you carry it in two parts in a back pack...
i like it. a swivel, sling lanyard to replace the screw, and a shotgun hologram sight. Maybe a variety of different shells, and a flashlight added.makes for a good SHTF gun.
You should invest in getting a Rossi matched pair it comes with a .22 barrel and a .410 one as well i think the going price is about $180 and that will give you a little more flexibility.
I've had an H&R "Topper" since I was 10 years old. Learning to hunt with a single shot .410 taught me how to be a patient and accurate hunter. I've had some other rifles and shotguns over the last 25+years but a few weeks into every season I go back to my "old reliable". It's rugged, simple, quiet, and lightweight for hunters like myself who like to trek 10+miles in the woods. If you need a 12 gauge pump/auto to kill anything turkey size and below....."You're doing it wrong".
@Gthompson09 mainly when the m6 Scout was made military pilots to store under the seat. For some reason they was shot down. Y have both? Even tho the 410 had the knock down power it don't have the range as an 22 does. So y not have both into one gun.
@Aussiehunter100 i honestly wouldn't try to kill a duck with a 410. if you do, better make sure you are close. if the duck is at any decent distance the .410 may not be able to achieve a clean kill, or even kill it at all.
i have a very old stevens model 940 single shot .410 shotgun and that thing has a pretty big bite on it that im guessing is because its barely over 3.5 pounds
i have the handi rifle in 270,but the beauty of it is the interchangable barrels, I was wondering if you had any experience. Does the Tamer shoot slugs? How about buckshot experience? I was thinking about getting one to carry in the brush in lieu of the 22 auto i usually bring. think it would have the puissance for defense against animals?
hello there, i have a .410 shotgun and i was wondering if it is illegal to saw off a part of the butt stock. it would still be over 26 inches i just dont know if i can modify this weapon like that. much appreciated if someone can help me out here.
hah my grampa has one of these with the stock cut down and the barrel sawed off. single shot 410 pistol :) only about 16in long or so and its perfect for survival. however yes it is very illegal x]
The H&R is better than the M6 Scout, because in a real situation you will be using the 410 anyways, and besides, the H&R has a shell ejector so it reloads faster. Anyone that has hunted with a 410 knows the value of fast reloads AND follow up shots.
For me the # 1 priority in the wild is get food and water as soon is it possible. And the 410 is perfect for get food quickly because it doesn´t cause to much damage to you catch, and for the self defence purpose or bigger animals you can use slugs and 000 ammo
@sietepeo1 in most places your priority is not food it is water fire shelter then food possibly switching the last 3 around. water is priority after just a small percentige of water lose you start to think slower and make bad decisions.
Interesting gun, but if I was backpacking it around I would saw off the pistol grip and lower part of the stock. (leaving the part of the stock that goes straight back to the shoulder. A folding stock would be even better (if you could find one that fits or possibly make it fold by sawing in half and adding a small SS hinge one side and a patch plate and screws on the other that hold it open for use) toavoid having to take it down each time.
@vpsaline I'm not sure if sgtboffy was trying to claim that the Tamer can "fire 45Lc just not with pinpoint accuracy" but I've owned a Tamer for a good seven months or so now so I can tell you that you can load a .45 LC into the chamber of a Tamer but I'd say with the full choke, there's a good reason why H&R specifies if a .410 barrel is designed for a .410/45 LC combination.
So you probably CAN fire them in the gun, but I'd say your barrel will go Elmer Fudd on your REAL quick...
ncie, looks a bit cheap tho.. but im used to wood stock and grips.. the asembely looks easy but might take a while when a black bear is chasing you up a tree lol.. sweet vid :) thumbs up and sub
@swibo6 yeah thats ture i dont think a wooden stock would last half as ong as one of those where you hunt but if you took that to a english game shoot you would look a fool! haa. great little 410 tho :)
Thats a wicked looking shotgun maybe il look into this, it looks much lighter then the 12 gauge i like its a modern old school look a like with a single shot
Most any hardware store should be able to find a screw with a knurled head you could turn by hand.
I saw one of these at a Gander mountain and thought it might be a great back pack gun. With slugs it should take even a deer from up close. I had looked at the Henry AR7 in .22LR but I think this would be more useful. It definitely would have more impact with slugs then the.22 and shot should be effective on small game. My Sears .410 brought home rabbits, squirrels, and pheasants as a kid.
just bought the rossi version as it was smaller and lighter, but i do own the version of this that shoots the 45/410. the 410 is probably better than the m6 because you can shoot slug. but at the price of the scout you could probably get a decent .22 kit gun.
@Xilser If you used 3" slugs and made a good shot I think it could. In a survival situation I wouldn't pass up the chance but I would choose a proper rifle if I had the option.
I bought one for my 12 year old son, and the first thing I did was replace the screw with a wing nut welded to a bolt, there is a spare in the shotshell holder as well. faster, easier takedown, and works great even w/ gloves on.
yea my dad spent the last 3 years looking for an m6 scout, he finnaly found one but it not all the great or very accurate. its a cool gun but it not that great.
G'day Mate well done on the vid pretty cool i am getting the survivor version and i cant wait i love H&R i had a Pardner in .410 but i like the Idea of Dual purpose. 410/45 I wonder if the new 460 S&W would fit that would be devistating on game!
Hey there newy22au, yeah I love the NEF/H&R's too. I'd like to have one to match every other gun caliber that I own but then I would probably leave the repeater at home and carry the single instead! I'll show a few more of my NEF/H&R's in videos soon! I'm glad you liked the vid!
I'm trying, it's hard to get anything that's low demand were I live so I may have to make some myself. So far I have slugs, 2.5 and 3" #4 and some 2.5" #6 but I'm hanging on to my empties!
great vid but that is one piece of crap gun!! that spread is disgusting. and a screwdriver need for assemply?and the screw doesint even stay in the stock...epic fail
Well, in it's defence It's not intended to be used as a take down gun so I will have to come up with a solution to the screw problem. Any gun that you buy is really just a starting point and will have to be changed to suit ones needs. And regarding the group, that's more my fault than the guns (I probably almost missed because I'm holding the cam as well) so don't write it off because of that!
Get the Choate Store-Arm forend and the screw that goes with it, about $20. My H&R Survivor has this and it not only allows you to take down without a screwdriver but you can store stuff in it. I keep 8 rounds 45 Colt, 4 rounds 2-1/2 inch #9 and 4 rounds 3 inch #4 in it. The Survivor stock , about $30, also has storage in it.
I'll look into that. I'm actually thinking about making my own forend for this thing. I have a survivor in .223 and the thumb screw works well so I'll have to make a similar setup for the .410.
The funny thing about this is that I bought the gun to be my wife's kayak "wilderness survival gun" but every time I borrow it find myself liking it more and more!!
@swibo6 Well in my quest for slugs for my Stevens 20 Guage I found that most are for rifled barrels so beware when you look for them. There are only certain types. .410 at 50 yards will take down a deer.
Yes, I really only intended this gun to be for survival small game hunting, if I ever did have to us it for larger game I would only use it at bow hunting distances. I'll probably do some testing on vid one of these days.
@swibo6 So how well does the shell ejector work on yours? Have seen some of the H&R bigger gauges not work worth a poop. I hope they got the quality under control.
I haven't measured the pack but it just barely fits the barrel so I would say it's about 19.5" inside height. If you are using a weekend or multi-day pack it will most likely fit inside.
does anybody have the 20 gauge, i have one but the third shell doesn't wanna stay in the spot on the side, the one closest to the bottom of the butt of the gun, does anybody else have this problem?
I have got to hunt where you live, you have time to put on earmuffs before you shoot them.....lol just kidding great vid brother....and I miss my tamer...when I finish paying for the pistol I bought my wife im going to get another one.
Does the paper run away faster where you live? j/k!! If I'm just plinking I'll make the effort to save my ears but hunting is a different story. It has paid off, I often hear things but the people I'm with just can't pick it up.

The .22 / .410 combos are a great choice for backpacking.

americanpatriot95 2 years ago
I don't have an alice pack but this might help you:
-the barrel including the chamber is about 19 3/8" long.
-the stock and reciever is about 16 3/4" long.
-the pistol grip from bottom to the place were a rear sight would be is under 5.5" with the hammer back.
-side by side the two pieces are under 3" wide.
I would imagine that this gun will fit in most any pack that is bigger than a regular day pack.
