The trouble with this cabaletta is that, if you take it too slowly, it sounds like a plod. The oom-pah/oom-pah accompaniment bogs down very quickly and the excitement is lost. Also, in this clip Guttierez is quite cautious and studied in her ornamtation which robs the music of its sponataneity.
@vocalissimo1 I'd like to disagree and say that you're being awfully critical, but you're exactly right. I mean, I have only love for Eglise - none of her contemporaries compare - but I do agree with your critiques about the tempo and her deliberation.
At last a singer who in addition to all her wonderful accomplishments has taken the trouble to learn how to sing a proper trill... lovely and I can't wait to her hear more. Looks like a return to phrasing and a revival of Bel Canto is on the way !
Dramatic coloratura is she?? Sounds a lot like a younger and different Callas, Sutherland and Anderson. She has some qualities of their voices. I think she's amazing!!
I don't like the sound of her 'placement'...to far in the palat...it's not my type of sound. Voices for this should be bright and edgy. Hers is weirdly placed. She sounds like a Jessye Norman an ocatve higher. I like voices with ample quality, that open up in colors and brightness like Dessay, Damrau, June Anderson. This lady's voice (at least omn this recording) it's yuky!
Please don't tell this to anyone. I only like Damrau in "O,zittre nicht!" (2003 The Royal Opera House Covent Garden with Colin Davis) as posted by Trisolde.
That´s right. Me too. Everything else I heard her (except for the duet in Rosenkavalier in Richard Tucker´s Gala) she doesn´t sound as good. Too much vibrato and like an old soprano.
Your pseudo knowledge of opera amazes me, but then again by saying that you like Dessay over her already tells me that you are deaf...and your comparison of her annd Madame Norman is just an offense to any opera lovers since Jessey Norman is a dramatic soprano which is closer to a mezzosprano and Eglise is a coloratura soprano...you are the one that is yuky!!!
I can tell that you have the same taste for opera as you have it for insects...but in that note yes thank God there are millions stars away...as you can see Dessay already can not hit any note and Eglise on the other had, can! But then again Eglise is singing this year at the Covent Garden...where is Dessay? doing concerts? I think the record speaks for itself....try to keep listening to more opera you need the lessons
josed get off your high horse they have a right to like dessay personally I'm a huge fan of hers and miss Gutierrez, but I can hear what they mean the voice is placed back in the throat which is ok but just not something someone with ears a tune to dessays (or damrau's or even june anderson's) vocal color is used to.
oh and BTW I'm pretty sure ANYONE would be honored to be compared to Norman...vocally of course :)
I had the great fortune of seeing Madam Gutierrez sing Elvira in Seattle Opera's "I Puritani" and get her autograph after the show. She's an amazing singer, and by far an amazing individual to meet in person.
Su voz se escucha cansada, pero a pesar de eso sale adelante, he tenido el placer de escucharla en vivo y realmente es muy buena, pero en esta funcion si se escucha un poco de fatiga vocal. Tomate un descanso:-)
@coloraturafan I just checked the note against the piano. It's an E-flat, not E or F. Lovely note, followed by lovely trills and beautiful legato coloratura singing, the way it should be done. Great, old fashioned singing here with none of that machine-gun aspirated singing one often hears nowadays.
Perhaps you should check out her old videos and not just fawn over her ability. See how's she's changed instead of just trying insult me. Focus on the artist and your opinion (not mine), thanks.
This is the kind of singing that everyone says is dead. Omg! This woman is a truly spectacular artist!!! This is the Golden Age of Opera REBORN in Eglise Gutierrez!!! I think I will be able to go to Miami to catch her Traviata and I am so excited! BRAVA!!!!
This production from the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Italy was recently broadcast throughout the Merral cinema's all over Europe. I was therefore able to see this great Bellini performance in Deventer, the Netherlands.
Did you say damage because the voice became more colorful and beautiful and full and more musical and better high notes and gorgeous pianissimi and great musicianship.Well, in my dictionary her singing is what Opera should be and when she sings Bel Canto she is a queen. I think this voice get's better and better every time I hear it and that is a sign of hard work and patience. Brava Eglise.
Actually her high notes, pianissimi and coloratura in general were better a few years ago. I think she's awesome and I love everything she does here, I'm just saying that I hope she's being careful you know? Bad things happen to a lot of young singers like her.
Yeah I LOVE her I performed in the chorus when she sang in Carnegie Hall's Mignon, and there is a definite change since then. She is amazing I hope she is as ever green as Devia.
She is powerful and she sings the high notes and coloratura parts with her soul!
She shines and I'm sure she will have a beautiful future. She really knows how to sing and she got the high F in the and, just in the same way Gruberova and Devia did!

This 'chica ' compared to Dessay sounds like a 'cucaracha' screming high hoarse notes. The two are a milion miles apart!

Why do you mean where is Dessay? she has contracts with the Met until 2011 and beyound!!!!!
delkhec 2 years ago 2
Natalie Dessay hates concerts, almost never does any.
Oh, and this year she does Paris, the MET, Vienna and Covent Garden. All of the main opera houses, no exception. Still wondering where she is?

yeah... that´s why Dessay is singing like shit and blaming an operation. And the only cucaracha here is YOU... ESTÚPIDA!

It is not an E, it is an F, not almost, it is an F, no reason to slight this singer.

Ero nel coro in questa produzione
La voce è molto bella però è come se gli acuti non sfogassero e poi spesso compariva un vibratino veramente brutto, peccato
