The second thing you showed while mentioning Jo Jo is very close to the push/pull. First technique is a gravity, no matter how you use it. That gravity stuff is simple as pie compared to fully learning push/pull. Cool that you mentioned all 3, as people rely on one or the other only sometimes. They're all one handed rolls. I'm not a fan of the gravity stuff as you get a click from the rim. Push/pull, constant finger motion and moeller are the way forward imo ;)
it's called a gravity blast and you use it in technical death metal. check out bands like the faceless and beneath the massacre to hear it in action. The one jojo mayer and buddy rich do is used by jazz drummers everyday. It's pretty obvious that you're not a jazz drummer.
The problem I have with gravity blasting is that I can't find that sweet spot in the stick so I am constantly doing rimshots when i don't want to. I guess i havent got the technique down.
Nahh I'm definitely not the dumbass you stupid shit. The bouncing of the stick on the rim of the drum (which he is referring to) is the easy way of doing a one handed roll, also called a gravity blast. Doing it the real way, you don't bounce it on the rim, its called the push pull method, or even the moeller a lot more difficult and a whole lot better sounding. Why don't you check out some videos of people doing that. Maybe know what your talking about before you say something next time.
I realise it's like 4 months down the line but you couldn't give me the link for a video with the so-called real way of doing it? I'm intrigued. And that sounds sarcastic but it's not man.
if you use the rim it's not a true one handed drum roll. I'm so sick of searching youtube for one handed roll and coming up with a bunch of guys doing gravity blasts. Buddy guy could do a true one handed drum roll and I'm sure there's others.
its a rim fulcrum roll. i say in the video jojo mayer and others do a true one handed roll and demonstrate how its done. buddy did a moeller triplet method. thanks for your wonderful imput boss keep up the good work.
I saw a jazz drummer do this at my school in the 80's. I was just blown away. He told me he worked mostly in nashville and had done some albums with some sould bands and country bands. Anyway, you did a nice job teaching this technique. These other mutton heads on here can piss off. A good drummer can make anything a musical instrument.
As is intelligently stated, "Playing it and making common sense using it are two different things. Guys today are too hung up on chops and speed and flash. Drumming is about music and keeping time. Some of the greatest drummers of all time had fair chops. Too many experts on YouTube playing in garages or basements when they should be out performing with a band. That is what drumming is about and that is fact.
you are correct.... but if you dont have your chops... u might b able to paly the most complex drum rhythms... but ull only b able to do a half assed fill, since most EVERY fill a drummer does is corely based on the chops
Oh my God, after spazzing my hand out near the rim and finding out about this, it took about thirty seconds to master. A push-pull or in-out or whatever you want to call it is a more genuine roll, especially since you don't get rim click sounds in there, (correct 'excuses', you would hear a rim clicking sound), and you can do it on virtually any surface. I'd lke to see a death metal drummer do this "Gravity Blast" on a ride bell for his precious, NEVER unoriginal blast beat.
i know two people who have studied with jojo, one who was his drum tech for many years named guy licata...good live drum and bass drummer, and as far as i know his name is pronounced that way.
yes. stevenhorgan touched the spot. it's not a drum. if it would have been, than you could hear what sound comes out when you hit the rim and the skin at the same time. for this technique, first the stick must hit the skin and only after that comes the rim.
ive.seen joey jordison use it for a speed tecniqe (i dont know how to spell)
