In what way? With the jumps? The skaters of today don't have the same level of control without knowing School Figures. It's all about the jumps more than anything.
She does have that distinction of being the first North American woman to win a gold in the Winter Games in Figure Skating.I expect to see her in the audience in Vancover in Feb.
I don't recognize it. It seems rather non-descript, so i suspect it was an original MOVIETONE composition done by the studios in Hollywood. Under the studio system, they had armies of talented musicians to produce both movies, and these Newsreels, that were seen in local movie houses and theatres. This was how national news was converyed in the 1930's and 40's, before television. The composer was probably matching movement to music! thanks for your question, best wishes
That is a sad, unfortunate, and unfair statistic! Let's throw in all the medalists, and I bet we will feel better about it! Winning isn't everything, and the price of winning anymore makes one appear to be some kind of demented freak, if you do pursue it!! We need some kind of ranking, scorekeeping system to track skaters over several years. Might be a more meaningful trophy!! best wishes
and there are so many amazing canadian skaters, like liz manley and kurt browning (who i believe did the first quad in competition). and jamie and david were such amazing pair skaters. like hockey, canada does figure skating proud :-)
Yes, we Americans like to 'BLAME CANADA' for everything!!! Jelineks, Toller Cranston, Borne/Kratz., Karen Magnusen, Petra Burka, the Bezics...I should make up a PLAYLIST just of Candian skaters!! or you should on your channel.....best wishes...hope all is well
In an interview I saw some years ago she said she had to skate on a rink that was badly worn by many previous contestants, but some of them told her about the surface conditions at various points on the rink so she said she skated around the bad areas. It seems ice resurfacing was not the priority we have today.
Yes, there are horror stories all around!! Even as late as 1979, the rink almost melted during the US Nationals (Cinncinnati), and skaters said the 1980 ice in Atlanta was simply chewed up.....getting used to the ice is such a critical competitive factor! thanks for commenting. best wishes
I lived 30 miles from Barbara Ann Scott but never met her. I was born in 1946

Funny thing is even the arms are sloppy and messy....not just the technical jumping part has evolved.

Context Clarity
In the interview I mentioned Barbara was referring to the ice conditions of the 1948 Olympic rink seen in this video.
